If you are looking to build a network and connect with people. Do not ask for something initially. Provide value. Setup an in person meeting and go from there. I get 5/10 messages a day from people asking to “network” or be referred with nothing to offer in return.

Make it professional, do not share shit unless it is something related to your work/portfolio. By shit, I mean feel-good stories or political stories like people do on BookFace and are now starting to do on LinkedIn.

If you want a connection, make sure you are or can soon add some value to that connection.

If you do good work and someone mentions that, ask them if they would be willing to write a recommendation for you. Don't ask everyone but be willing to ask. I have had several glowing recommendations written for me, that I believe have gotten me new jobs simply because I asked if someone would write me one (of course the recommendation that was written was based on my hard work and building trust with those people).

Don't accept every single invite you receive, be discerning. As you already know this isn't IG, it isn't how many followers/connections you have. It is who those connections know and what they can do for you AND vice versa for you to them, who YOU know and what YOU can do for them.

I prefer to connect with people I have actually met and/or worked with. Rather than simply virtual connections. The caveat being Recruiters and select other people in my industry.
