My roommate, we'll call him Jeff, and I showed up at a mutual friend's party. We get there pretty early around 9:30. Jeff and I go to get some drinks before meeting the rest of the guests. I meet Nathan's 3 other roommates. Mathis, one of the roommates/hosts becomes important later. Most of the guests were girls but there was one girl who stood out in particular. She was a blonde HB8. Jeff starts introducing himself to the circle of girls talking in the living room while I hang back before joining him. Out of nowhere, HB8 startles me by introducing herself. I take this as an IOI. I find out she's an international student from Denmark who loves the campus meal plan. Jeff comes into the conversation and takes the wheel. A few minutes later, I pull him aside asking if he's going to go for her. He tells me he's interested so I back off. I go off and meet new people and socialize with people I already know. I notice that Jeff is not pursuing HB8 anymore and he's going for a new girl, HB7.5. I talk to him again and he tells me to go ahead and pursue HB8.

Two new guests arrive with a beer pong table and they set it up outside. I go outside and find HB8 talking to Mathis. I ask HB8 if she wants to be my beer pong partner but she is already paired up with him. I decide to pair up with HB8's less attractive Australian friend, HB4. Throughout the remainder of the party I would go inside and out talking to different people while I waited for my turn to play beer pong. HB4 became very distracted and I'm pretty sure she forgot we were supposed to even play. Eventually I run into an old friend and we play beer pong against the reigning champs. Since we're both rusty, we get obliterated. Jeff comes to me to announce that we're leaving. I become overall disappointed with my night, wishing I had at least gotten HB8's #. Jeff starts having conversations with guests outside the front door. My ex-roommate from freshman year, Raj, enters the party. I realize that I have much more time than I had anticipated.

I go back and talk with Raj and he happens to go where Jeff is to smoke a cigarette. I'm still inside and I see HB8 smoking hookah with a spot next to her on the couch. I decided that it was now or never. I take the spot and while she's smoking, I tell "I need to talk to you after you're done". She passes the hookah to the next person and I ask her if she remembers my name. She becomes flustered with embarrassment because she can't recall my name. I repeat my name and tell her that I think she's really cute and I wanted to get coffee with her. I then tell her I wish I could have talked to her more but Mathis was talking to her. She seemed flattered and receptive. I handed her my phone and she put in her number. I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't text back because I didn't generate enough attraction but I found it empowering to be this direct with a girl.
