I like having items that generate discussion. For example: skateboard rack, guitar stand, map of the world with pushpins showing where you've been, etc.

My nightstand:

On top: Stack of books, a lamp, a candle, a lighter, and a box of tissue.

Top drawer: Condoms and sex toys.

Things that define you that you can put up on display. Basically anything that you can tell a story about or something interesting that she might comment on. Cool lighting is also a plus. I don't like having sex in a pitch black room but bright lights don't help set the mood. Either get a dim lamp or a lava lamp if your feeling groovy
