Ask more open questions. I find asking about hobbies is a good one. Like have you got any interests/hobbies you're into? It gets them talking about something they're excited about. You may find you have common ground if they say "oh I love this music and these crafts and this game and reading these types of books." Then you can continue to talk with "oh I've read that book too, I loved this part." Or "I love that band also, have you heard of this band, they're similar, you might like them too" etc etc etc

Asking about hobbies will also let you know if you're going to find this person interesting or not. It'll let you know how much you have in common pretty quickly. Like if they love mountain climbing, and abseiling, and snowboarding; and you're the indoors type, maybe you aren't the best match and might want to move on, unless of course you want a little excitement and change in your life :p

Finally, It'll also give you some good date ideas for the future if you get that far. If they say they live jazz maybe take them to a jazz club, or if they live reading take them to a big book shop with a cafe, stuff like that :)

Suck at texting? Keep texting to making plans.

"hi so and so, it was nice meeting you. Are you free at X time to do X on X day."

Then, if they are interested they'll say yes, or suggest another time/activity.

Then your say "great, I'll see you then!" And *put your fucking phone away".

This seems counterintuitive, but it works really well if you aren't the best at texting.
