Oh man, this reminds me of a time I screwed up badly.

I'm chatting up this woman on the train, who appears to be 10-15 years older than I am. She seems to be enjoying the conversation, and when we get off at the same stop, she asks me if I'm going to the same pub as her, almost excitedly (unfortunately, I'm not).

When I finally ask for her number, she's like "I think I'm a little older than you take me for…"

I kinda freak out because I try hard not to be persistent or creepy, so as soon as a woman says something that signals even the slightest disinterest or resistance, I bail. I go, "uh, yeah… probably," and immediately cross the street so that it won't seem like I'm following her.

It's only after the interaction that I realize that this wasn't a rejection, it was a disclaimer. She just wanted to make sure I was okay with seeing a more mature woman. Which I totally would have been.

But my response pretty much said "uh yeah, you are pretty old. What was I thinking?! Bye!" I pretty much unintentionally insulted her and probably made her feel terrible.

So, my advice is: don't do what I did. Just make a witty joke that shows that you're unconcerned about her age, and move on.
