about 2/3 of the way through but i’m wondering—what will happen to the children of pro-porn, “”sex positive”” millennial/gen z people? when they get to the age where they start learning about sex, how many of their parents will brainwash them into thinking porn is normal and good? it’s bad enough that millennials and gen z had this shit forced on them by capitalism. it’s another level of sad to imagine it coming from people who kids/teens should trust the most.

How did you stay friends with him after the divorce? Did you (or he) say something in particular that kept the door open? Thank you for sharing your experience--it's always helpful to hear!

You're right, I should follow my instinct. I think you also make a good point about not having feelings for anyone else right now. Thank you for reminding me to re-ground myself!

random thought to build confidence/mantra of sorts: you are never out of his league.

the part about him talking to your dad is so sweet 😭😭😭 (on top of all the sweetness toward you of course! 💛)

there’s a less extreme version of these hyper-slob types too (god, the horror stories in these comments…!)—men who have that cheese-like smell. it’s not an un-showered smell exactly, but like “i stood under the water for 1.5 minutes and also don’t know how to use soap.” can’t stand being near them, even if it’s just a few moments in an elevator or something

related question for you ladies: a guy i’ve been talking to for a few days asked me out and asked “is there a place in town you like?” for the date. i obviously want him to do the planning and feel like i could respond to this creatively… “wherever you think will impress me” or “places with michelin stars” or something like that. thoughts/ideas?

It might also help to mention that this could come back to bite her when she starts looking for another job. I say "when" because this sort of "fame" doesn't last, if only because nobody looks young forever. It's standard now for employers perform background checks and informally google candidates and, who knows, may have even seen her :( Similarly, even if she's making a decent amount of money off of this somehow right now, it's not like she's a movie star. It will run out. She needs to think a…

I think it left me feeling like he couldn't understand me. I never shared the full extent of the things I'd been through with him, and I'm glad I didn't. Not that I would share it with someone else, but there was definitely a gap between us. And I think it would've terrified him if he knew, for example, how dysfunctional my family is, which he would've found out if we had stayed together/gotten married. Perhaps this boils down to the fact that he'd never had to grow, which left him immature. And…

I like the optimistic realism vs. toxic positivity framing. Thank you for this.

I've seen similar comments in other threads; how do you find out if someone is in therapy without revealing that you're in it yourself? And from there, how do you find out whether he's at a point where he's safe to be around?

Good question. Here are a few ways that come to mind: Since he was used to being happy, he got frustrated when I went through bouts of depression or anxiety. At first he was accepting, but eventually he couldn't understand why I can't just look on the bright side of things or chill out. I think he just didn't know what it was like to experience those things because again, he hadn't ever really been hurt. He brought his happy childhood up a lot. Seemed way too attached to it for someone over 30, …

I’m talking GLOBAL FUCKING REALITY. And this is important. One study found that 89% of women in prostitution across nine countries wanted to exit the sex industry. This included 92% in Thailand, 95% in Canada, 97% in Colombia, and 99% in Zambia. That study is a little old, but it provides a really comprehensive overview of the global situation. I'm sure there are more recent, yet similar findings out there, but I don't have time to look right now. There are also country-specific studies document…

you should never sacrifice your happiness or career path for a man. nothing wrong with him teaching or rural towns, but don't upend your life for him if that's not what you want. always remember: a man can leave at any time, but your career is with you for the rest of your life. side note: are you in law school by chance? asking because i am and your description sounds kind of like how law school/the legal field rolls. i have some more thoughts that are specific to it, but will hold back for now…

i guess it depends, but in that particular case, the guy lovebombed her and sadly she, for lack of a better term, fell for it :(

thank you for the reply! you’re right that it’s impossible to know completely what someone else is experiencing. i definitely try to keep that in mind in a whole bunch of situations. i like what you said about letting them come to me if they have concerns, and just giving them advice then. unfortunately, part of the problem is they volunteer this sort of thing totally unsolicited. for example, i’ll get a text or call and we’ll small talk a bit, then she’ll launch into how [guy] is wonderful, the…

the maude vibe (only one they have lol) is suuuper strong, even more so than my lelo soraya; i almost never use it past the first setting. it’s also $45 so pretty affordable compared to many others!

the longer you stay with him, the longer you'll feel this way: unhappy. the longer you stay with him, the harder it will be to leave: a little more every day. and the longer you stay with him, the longer it will be before you find a HVM. think way into the future: when you're, say, 60, do you want to look back and say you spent 40 years with this jerk? for all we know, you could meet an amazing guy by chance the very day after you leave him--so you could look back and say you spent 30 happy year…

and that's understandable, but your ex wasn't HV anyway. not being with him is the first step toward finding a man who is HV. obviously give yourself time to heal and build up confidence before dating again (and probably wait for the pandemic to settle down), but yeah. plus, even in the unlikely event you don't find a HVM, it's better to be single than with him anyway. as much as it hurts in this moment, it would be miserable to spend the rest of your life dealing with whatever made him LV, whet…

here’s what worked for me: whenever you start to miss him or blame yourself, remind yourself of all the ways he’s LV. writing the list down on paper or in a notes app can be helpful because then you see it all. you can also refer back to the list in the future. as for asking him to come back, remind yourself that you know what the answer will be, it’s going to hurt, it hinders your recovery, and at some point you’ll look back and wonder why on earth you did that. you can also distract yourself f…

Agree with everything you said except one small thing, the first line of the second paragraph. Prostitution is just another way men demonstrate power over—and entitlement to—women. Despite what people online say, it’s not empowering and some who have fortunately exited have talked about how traumatic it is to have sex with men for no reason other than them paying you (i.e., not out of actual attraction). If there were no demand, the sex industry wouldn’t exist.

similar experience here. the paragard made me bleed nonstop. when i had it taken out, the nurse tried to make me use the nuvaring even though i said i wasn’t comfortable putting something in me that i couldn’t reach and i knew i’d forget about it. when i accidentally got pregnant and terminated, and then tried to get another type of IUD, she said “i’m sorry you had an abortion.” i was like fuck off asswipe, i’m not sorry at all lmao i know this is a little off topic but yeah. fuck providers who …
