I like the quote. It is morally sound, and has been the basis for many positive social movements. The civil rights movement, for example, broke unjust laws. Even if Jefferson never said it, other people did, such as Thomas aquinas, who wrote "an unjust law is not a law". Of course, there is a right way and and a wrong way. If you think a law is unjust, defy it openly with a clear explanation ready, putting the law itself on trial. Be willing to accept any punishment.

I think of it like this: in the USA, 80% of muder victims are men, and yes, most of those murderers are men. Now, if someone commits murder, does that generally mean they have had a good life? No, it does not. Murderers usually come from broken homes, grew up in poverty, were abused as children, had mental health issues that went ignored or untreated, etc. That's hardly what you would expect to happen tens of thousands of times in a male-centric society, is it?
