Actually, Meditations isn't a book on philosophy (although its viewpoint is informed by Stoic philosophy); it's basically a journal. The original title was "Ta eis eauton", or "[Thoughts] to Himself", and in it Aurelius wrote down things to remember, words and principles to live by, etc. - all of which were admittedly heavily influenced by Stoicism. Basically, it was never meant for publication and somebody found it.

I absolutely hate the Pope translations of anything, but maybe I'm a classical purist (I do enjoy his original poetic works). I think the rhyming couplets Pope uses absolutely destroy the dactylic hexameter of the classical poetry and its poetic effects (I'm also big on analyzing metrics in ancient poetry) and his word selection is often pretty unfaithful.
