I feel for you. I have felt very similar. My kids are toddlers. I wake up feeling like this most days. Why don’t I? Because I’m scared and also because I know it would hurt those who I want to stop hurting. If some of our worth comes from the example we set, the love we give our kids, the time we have for them when they need us, then maybe we stick around and we find a way. That’s how we rediscover our worth and meaning. Here if you ever want a chat.

She kicked me out while I was away and I didn’t have the guts to force my way back in. I felt it wouldn’t be good for kids to see the tension and the horrible vibe.

We just told them we weren’t going to be married anymore. Mine are 5 and 3. My son has never really known me living at home. Left when he was 1.

Wow. It’s such a drawn out process. Like punishment beyond measure. Horrible. Daughter tonight said ‘daddy, next time you come to see us’ like in a visitor or friend. Their mum would have broken in two if the shoe had been on other foot, I’m sure.

No money to rent nearby. Paying mortgage on house and nursery and bills.

I feel you and was / am the same. Time helps. Just keep going and it’ll get easier. It did for me.

Absolutely not. But I really really don’t want to be alone.

My god I wish I did this before I had kids and everything was insane and before I’m gonna lose all my money and see my kids every other weekend Wish I was you!

I instigated, then changed my mind. She said no to reconciliation. She’s been adamant and told me to stop asking, so I stopped and have been in a new relationship for over a year. It was that or be alone. And the new person was / is wonderful. I’m all over the bloody place. I just want to be with my kids and get my life back and do things right and look after my family. I love my new partner but at the same time am obsessed with reconciling.

Why?

I guess the question is whether I tell my ex. There’s still time to give my daughter what she wants. Even if that’s difficult for me and my ex.

Late 30s. She’s not clear if she wants them but I suspect so. I can’t possibly guarantee that I will ever want more. I’m stretched beyond my abilities at the moment.

I’m not sure I see it as mixing in a bonus mum? I see it as adding someone who will love them and be a positive influence.

I told her that. I told her I couldn’t make a decision for her and it was for her to think about. I told her I can’t promise her that things will work out a certain way - I told her it’ll be tough as hell and that she’s sacrificing a lot and committing to a life of raising my kids.

I think she could play the aunt role. But I worry she is stuck between wanting to be with me, and knowing that if she is with me she joins ‘my life’ rather than having a full life of her own, with her own family. She’ll always feel like a stranger.

Thanks buddy. I can’t consider it as I already have too much to do, too little time, too little money to be a good dad to another kid. I couldn’t face it. If I won the lottery, maybe, but even then the pulls on my time are too much.

The kids having both parents together? Financial security? A stable, single home? Refinding lost love?

This is good advice. Trying to build that good life, but it’s hard when you see your ex, she looks like the girl you fell in love with, and you just talk. It’s the reminder of the good times that hurts so much. The ‘why couldn’t we make it work’ and the ‘why did we focus so much on the difficulties and not the joy and partnership’. Oh well, onwards eh.

Give it time. I didn’t truly love or get my son till he was 1. I ended my marriage around that time. Now I wish I hadn’t. After kids, it’s not about loving your wife I feel. It’s about just being a dad and finding any small nice moments you can.

I’ve been there. I left. Not sure what was worse. I don’t think there’s an answer. It’s just a curse once you marry the wrong person

I think getting her a gift is a nice friendly thing to do. It doesn’t mean more than that. I would do it / have done it

I mean, the point is I don’t want to be the asshole. Why isn’t that enough to not be the asshole. That’s kind of my point. Like if you don’t wanna be the asshole, why do you continue to be it?

I want to do better. But what does that look like other than what I’m doing? I’m showing up for the kids, I’ve apologized, I’ve given so much to my new relationship, I’ve tried to make peace. What I’m left with is a ruined life where all those around me are screwed over by my choices. If I could disappear in a way that wouldn’t make my children’s lives even worse, I would. I guess I just have to keep going

Keep working on it. I left, see my kids 3 times a week but it’s awful. Anything can be saved if you’re both willing to put in the work.

Yes I’m selfish, and yes I’m mentally ill. Yes I’m terrible. Yes I’m in a firestorm of regret and anxiety. Yes I want pity. Yes I’m pathetic. Yes this is yucky. Hence why I feel a desire to end everything and spare those I love what I do to them. But yes I’ve apologised to my ex again and again. Yes I’ve got my mental health checked. Yes I’m a better dad now. Yes I’m still providing financially for them all. But everything you say I agree with. I’m a disgrace.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
