I think the argument some women make is that abusers are more likely to be abusive if they have a partner they can more easily abuse. I think being "easy to abuse" has more to do emotional weakness and whether or not you recognize that you deserve better than physical weakness. Which arguably makes emotionally stunted men more susceptible to abuse than women, though I personally don't think there's any need to gender it.

It's not just lesbians, many studies have found that straight women abuse their partners at the same rate. Homophobes prefer to dig up studies that validate the patriarchal "men are abusers" stereotype in order to make it look like there's something about being a lesbian that makes you more likely to be abusive.

“For them, as for so many of us, romantic hurt equaled romantic blame, and because they were exclusive heterosexuals, romantic blame was assigned more often to the sex, not the morals, of the person inflicting the pain. Bisexuals know that hurt gets inflicted by both sexes in equal measure.” - Norah Vincent, Self-Made Man

My ex didn't even think of herself as feminist but she was still wearing blinders to the double standards she put me through and the abusive behaviours. My abusers weren’t feminists either, and I think that’s where the danger lies - women who grew up in matriarchal families (see the first link in my OP) and are only familiar with the aspects of feminism that rationalize the abusive double standards they internalized growing up. Of course, in my experience most of the people who call themselves f…

I will have to revisit this post when I am less tired and more sober, but here are my initial thoughts. Upvote for having done your research. Infants from as young as 9-17 months of age display gender-stereotypical toy preferences, with males being more predisposed to "thing" orientation and females being more predisposed to "people" orientation. By nine months infants are social creatures capable of understanding and reacting to the expectations of their adult caregivers. Females on average ten…

I'm sure there are differences, but until I'm presented with concrete evidence that a specific pattern of thought or behavior is caused by the Y chromosome or the lack of one I'm going to default to the assumption that there is no compelling reason to divide the world's brains into "male" and "female".
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates19/02/20 11:44 PM

Until we know of a clear mechanism by which the Y-chromosome might promote violent behavior (testosterone does not appear to be one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transgender_hormone_therapy_(female-to-male)#Psychological_changes) I don't see any reason to prefer that theory over the alternative hypothesis that men are violent because they're taught to repress their emotions as children, left to fend for themselves on the playground under the logic that "boys will be boys", and grow up into a wo…

Just a random "shower thought" but what if that socialization process is biological? Meaning parents are biologically predisposed to treat baby boys differently from baby girls, which then causes these differences? Given that pre-pubescent children would look completely identical if we didn't dress and groom them differently based on their genitals, I'm skeptical. It would be interesting to compare and contrast the development of gender-specific behavior in chimpanzees (who have a sex-based hier…

Our findings that these sex differences are present in childhood implicate early life genetic or gene-environment interaction mechanisms. I can't access the full article so I can't check if they have any stronger evidence of a genetic or epigenetic factor, but I'm still not convinced that there are any meaningful differences between the male and female brain that aren't primarily the result of us socializing them differently pretty much from the moment they're born.

Even now that we do know how bad it is, churches cutting their ties with the Vatican doesn't exactly seem to be a thing that's happening. Sexual abuse is one of those things that we always think of as being someone else's responsibility. Which is exactly what happened with the BSA, and is still happening in this conversation.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates18/02/20 10:36 PM

For many years, the Boy Scouts had insurance that would cover sexual abuse claims. But in recent years these carriers have been withdrawing coverage, arguing that the Boy Scouts knew about the abuse and didn't tell the insurance companies. That has left the organization with the prospect of having to fund any litigation and settlements itself. This isn't a new problem. Why didn't those local scouts take their limited resources and voluntarily sever ties with the BSA sooner? If only to protect th…

I mean, that's the fundamental problem with the world isn't it? And most people and organizations aren't clearly evil.

The Church gets donations because they're the OG exploitative televangelists. They preach poverty and charity as virtues and then build elaborate gold palaces for themselves in Rome. My friends from Latin America say that the Church is so heavily involved in their country's politics that cardinals and bishops are basically unelected government officials, with all the potential for corruption that implies. Nothing is ever wholly good or wholly bad but the Catholic Church has to go. Their private …

That's very true, which is why no one actually believes that privilege is synonymous with quality of life - although many people certainly act as if that is the case. Privilege is like getting a hidden bonus to all your charisma checks. You'll still fail some. Maybe you're just unlucky and will end up failing the majority of them even with the bonus. And maybe you have hidden penalties from your other identities that effectively cancel out those bonuses. But those hidden bonuses are still there,…

To reiterate: by its own definition, the Pink Tax is only applicable to female-targeted consumer that are identical to male-targeted consumer goods save for marketing and branding. This is false. You very obviously did not read the article I posted and your argument amounts to a straw man. The pink tax is a phenomenon often attributed as a form of gender-based price discrimination, with the name stemming from the observation that many of the affected products are pink.[1] This is not a literal t…

Also, you've also fallen into the classic Pink Tax fallacy: that the more expensive products market at women are identical and interchangeable with the products marketed at males, but you've just clearly stated they are not. Okay fine, "identical or similar". I'm not aware of any reason women's cut pants would be any more expensive to manufacture than men's cut pants. I disagree with the word choose there. We don't have as much agency under capitalism as we'd like to think. I know several women who would prefer to wear men's pants for the lower price and functional pockets but for obvious reasons they struggle to find men's pants that are cut to fit their larger waists.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates15/02/20 11:25 AM

The Pink Tax is the observation that products marketed towards women tend to cost more than identical products being marketed towards men. It has nothing to do with the wage gap. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pink_tax

The second sentence of that article displays a complete lack of understanding about what the "pink tax" is. I'm not willing to give Hive my email address in order to read the full report, but from my experiences with tech companies publishing papers like this I'm guessing that it's about as scientifically rigorous and externally valid as PornHub Insights.

I'm a trans woman (who remembers how she was treated before she renounced her masculinity) and I feel the same way. I was raised by an abusive misandrist who had complete and total control over my life for decades, internalized the gendered nature of that abuse, and vehemently reject the idea that men aren't / can't be "oppressed", but other than that my views are mostly in line with those of the Social Justice movement. TORONTO -- The age-old bias that suggests “boys don’t cry” is unconsciously perpetuated by mothers more than fathers, according to new research from the University of Guelph. The study, published in the Canadian Journal of Behavioral Science, found that moms tend to favour girls expressing emotions of sadness and anger over boys. Fathers, on the other hand, lacked a bias towards emotions of anger and sadness in their children. https://www.ctvnews.ca/sci-tech/boys-don-t-cry-study-suggests-mothers…

If you need to go into this much detail about what words technically mean, you're the one who's playing word games. "Sexualizing" is a perfectly apt and intuitive description of what is happening when you project your prejudices about adult men's sexuality onto kindergartners.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates02/02/20 06:33 AM

Not a word game. The prejudice against male sexuality starts before you even have one. Small wonder there are men who view even slightly intimate contact with a woman as sexual, when they've been told from the age of five that something as innocent as a coed sleepover is somehow sexual and inappropriate.

There's also the fact that many women (especially those in my family) think that as the mother, they should have the final say about what happens regarding the children. One legitimate reason could be that due to cultural reasons boys typically go into CS courses with a higher level of starting knowledge than girls, although there's no reason universities couldn't just offer optional introductory courses that aren't unnecessarily gendered. When feminists lobby for special programs to help women in poverty, they're advocating for something they already had under "patriarchy". The fact that feminism tends to solve problems in the same way the system they're rebelling against solved them (gender segregation as a way of "protecting" women is another example) should make us stop and question whether feminism is actually the best way to effect meaningful change and bring about a truly egalitarian society.

I completely support women working outside the home and I don't think feminists were bad for pushing for it. What I do think is worth talking about is the way feminism puts all its focus on the top of society while ignoring the plight of those at the bottom. It's similar to how they choose to focus on the fact that most billionaires are male while ignoring the fact that most homeless people are also male. This post explains it better than I ever could. However, in their demands for political equ…

However, in their demands for political equality our feminists are like their foreign sisters; the wide horizons opened by social democratic learning remain alien and incomprehensible to them. The feminists seek equality in the framework of the existing class society, in no way do they attack the basis of this society. They fight for prerogatives for themselves, without challenging the existing prerogatives and privileges. We do not accuse the representatives of the bourgeois women’s movement of…

I wrote about my personal gender confusion at some length here, if you care: https://old.reddit.com/r/asktransgender/comments/eaowxm/am_i_a_misogynist_or_a_trans_woman_do_i_hate/ I was under the impression transgenderism was a more basal, inherent issue of being born in the wrong body This is a common misconception, but no. One of the first things I learned when I started questioning is that not all trans people experience physical dysphoria. This is one of the reasons we abandoned "transsexual"…
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates25/01/20 03:29 PM

Exactly. TERFs think that people who are raised as men can't be trusted. Mainstream feminists think that people who are raised as men can't be trusted unless they renounce their masculinity. What's more androphobic: fearing and distrusting people for being born with penises, or fearing and distrusting people for identifying/presenting as male? And since the former causes real harm to trans women and the latter causes real harm to trans men, which is more transphobic? Feminists say that gender is…

My sister was molested by a (cis) woman. I'm not convinced that "women's spaces" actually do anything to keep women safe. The idea that they do is rooted in the same "patriarchal" assumptions about men that feminists claim not to believe in.

The enemy of my enemy is sometimes my friend sure, and your support for male issues is welcome as a woman but why should we be overly concerned with the treatment of women or trans-women (same thing imo) by feminists? Because the enemy of your enemy is your friend. Isn't it up to feminists to police their own and change their movement? Do you think they are going to be particularly swayed by MRA criticism? Do you think we are in a position to right this wrong? I've given up on feminists policing…

Like many trans people, I don't experience physical dysphoria. My dysphoria is entirely social. I wouldn't have any problem with my body or even care about my gender at all if those things didn't cause people - including and especially feminists - to make false assumptions about and have inaccurate expectations of me. If my idea of "goodness" was not inherently linked to the idea of womanhood. If it wasn't genuinely harder for me to view men (including myself) with empathy and compassion, a prej…

All of that is true, but the real question here is: if trans people's brains really are different than those of cis people who were assigned the same gender, why? Is it genetic? Or is it the result of our experiences growing up? I lean towards the latter, but will admit that there's no hard evidence either way.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates24/01/20 04:21 PM

There is some science suggesting that at least some trans people literally have male brains in female bodies or vice versa (and also science suggesting that the difference between "male" and "female" brains has more to do with nurture than nature), but no. Gender dysphoria is diagnosed based on symptoms, not neurology. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender_dysphoria#Diagnosis https://www.the-scientist.com/features/are-the-brains-of-transgender-people-different-from-those-of-cisgender-people-30027

Women are not helpless, agency-less victims, but benefit from and play an outsize role in perpetuating the system of gender norms erroneously referred to as "patriarchy". Define patriarchy. I think one of the problems with discussions like these is that there are a lot of "wrong" definitions of patriarchy that have become "correct" within certain communities. (The academic definition is not necessarily more correct than the others.)

What I'm hoping people take away from this post is that women who dominate their families are able to do so not despite but because of their femininity. Their femininity gives them power over men in a way that other forms of oppression do not give power to the oppressed class. "Patriarchy" is better understood as a cycle of abuse, with men and women wielding and abusing power over each other in different ways, than as "rule by men".

Feminists have demonised power, I wouldn't say that they're necessarily wrong to do so. We’re policing ourselves. We do this by understanding what it’s like to be in someone’s shoes and how they may feel victimized. This... does not match my personal experience at all, which is that women are very bad at empathizing with men. My only objection to this article is that "no one ever said [female privilege] doesn’t exist" is total bull, even when you accept the obvious hyperbole. Feminists are in no rush to acknowledge their privilege or the ways in which women's actions perpetuate the system of gender norms they erroneously refer to as "patriarchy". That's why they define "sexism" as something that women are fundamentally incapable of. It's easier than critical thought or personal growth.

The amount of power mothers have over their children - especially in the era of no-fault divorce and a broken and biased family court system - is something Feminists spend a lot of time willfully ignoring.

I reject your attempt to force this label on me. Gender equality is not an exclusively feminist value. Also, you replied to the wrong comment. Dumbass.

Yeah, that's the kind of wibbly-wobbly "well, technically" bullshit that caused me to leave feminism. Blocking you, since you clearly have nothing to say that's worth listening to.

Feminists do not and never have treated men and women as equals. Edit to add: In fact, they have spilled quite a bit of ink talking about how feminism is not about "equality", but about "justice", which is awfully convenient since equality has an objective definition, while justice means literally whatever the fuck you want it to mean.

This entire thread is about how men's anger towards women, no matter how justified, is constantly invalidated and labelled misogynistic. I think you are missing the point.

Your statement implies that your opinion would have been different if you had taken gender into account. If I misread that, my apologies.

It's almost as if REPRESENTATION MATTERS and feminists have been actively fighting to prevent female-dominated professions from being held to that standard. Also, why the FUCK does my gender matter?!

I spent my entire life believing that I deserved everything those abusive women did to me. Realizing that I didn't was a huge personal breakthrough. She chose to invalidate the most important breakthrough of my life.

Soldiers and police officers are the exception to the "dangerous jobs" rule. They're glorified enough to warrant attention in the representation department despite the risk. Edit: Now that I think about it, that says a lot about feminism's implicit acceptance of capitalism, militarism, and the police state.

Amber Heard is a legally proven domestic abuser. Still being invited to speak at feminist rallies against domestic abuse. Does anyone care? Of course not, least of all feminists, because it was a woman doing it to a man and therefore not important.

Not power, but specifically hard power. Feminists want you to believe that the social, familial, and emotional power women wield is meaningless and "doesn't count", because money is the only form of power that matters. Edit: To clarify, "familial power" includes the complete and total power women are given over children, whether by "patriarchy", by feminism, or by our court system. Feminists want you to think that their misandry/androphobia is harmless because women don't have power over men. Th…

Something I've been thinking about a lot lately is how unbelievably capitalist feminism is. The idea that men are privileged - which is how feminists justify literally everything they do to us - is fundamentally rooted in the idea that money and the ability to earn it is more important than your emotional well-being as a person.

So... you aren't wrong. Gender is a spectrum and nobody is 100% male or 100% female. So technically, everyone is non-binary. The thing is... the same is true of sexuality. Nobody is 100% straight or 100% gay. So technically, everyone is bisexual. And... bisexuals don't really like that line of reasoning. Because while it's correct in theory, in practice most of the world's population identifies as straight or gay. And it's kind of shitty to pretend that people who call themselves gay/straight ar…

Trans woman here, you're right but it turns out that - surprise! - feminists don't actually follow their own rules! Cis feminists only pay lip service to trans rights, and only when it's convenient for them. If you question their orthodoxy in any way, you're labelled an oppressor. Prior to my transition, I was an outspoken radical feminist. I spoke up often, loudly and with confidence. I was encouraged to speak up. I was given awards for my efforts, literally — it was like, “Oh, yeah, speak up, …

They may be similar (you should watch the video I linked), but surely you agree that "decided to shoot up a school after reading a book about someone he relates to deciding to shoot up a school" is a lot more plausible than "decided to shoot up a school after playing a game about a space marine killing demons on Mars".

Stephen King requested that his novel Rage (published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman), a novel about a disaffected young man who shoots up his school, be pulled from shelves after numerous school shooters were found to have read it. Would those people have done what they did if they hadn't read the book? Nobody knows. The book didn't "make them" do it, but it's also disingenuous to claim that it had zero influence on them. The kind of people who go out and do these things definitely seem li…

Isn’t it the story of why 2 men got arrested for standing in Starbucks? Isn’t it the story of Emmett Till? It's an issue that absolutely affects men. Just because the article doesn't put the spotlight on us doesn't mean it's not male advocacy.

White women tears are especially potent and extra salty because they are attached to the symbol of femininity. These tears are pouring out from the eyes of the one chosen to be the prototype of womanhood; the woman who has been painted as helpless against the whims of the world. The one who gets the most protection in a world that does a shitty job overall of cherishing women. The mothers, sisters, daughters and aunties of the world’s biggest bullies (white men). But the truth is, white women ha…

This is basically what feminists did to the word "misogyny". Been in use since the 1700s Literally translates to "hatred for women" Feminists: Misogyny isn't hating women, it's participating in behavior that perpetuates women's oppression. We redefined it and anyone who doesn't know the "correct" definition is stupid and wrong about everything.

I'd be fine with them calling it feminism if they didn't pretend that they advocate for men's issues too. It's mind-boggling how they think men can't ever understand what they go through, but somehow they understand what it's like to be a man, what our issues are, and how to solve them better than we do.
