  • Women are not helpless, agency-less victims, but benefit from and play an outsize role in perpetuating the system of gender norms erroneously referred to as "patriarchy".

  • Either gender is an artificial social construct that can be chosen or it's something meaningful and important enough to explicitly organize your communities around. Pick one.

  • The existence of female abusers, who by definition have more power and agency than their male victims, and the fact that mothers are routinely given complete and total control over male children means that misandry can never be dismissed as merely irritating.

Dear feminists, please stop using TERFs as a scapegoat for everything that’s wrong with your movement while not actually doing anything to fight them. Sincerely, a trans woman.

Feminists think that misogyny is a slippery slope, but that misandry is a binary either/or thing.

A lot of writers have a really warped notion of what it means for a man to "take advantage" of a woman.

  • Women are not helpless, agency-less victims, but benefit from and play an outsize role in perpetuating the system of gender norms erroneously referred to as "patriarchy".

  • Either gender is an artificial social construct that can be chosen and changed or it's something meaningful and important enough to explicitly organize your communities around. Pick one.

  • The existence of female abusers, who by definition have more power and agency than their male victims, and the fact that mothers are routinely given complete and total control over male children means that misandry can never be dismissed as merely irritating.

Also, peoplr have this idea that males should be responsible for others' behaviours. I'm here like, aren't mothers the primary caretakers? Why are they teaching them toxic masculinity?

[–]Lady_Coraline2 10 points11 points12 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

While simultaneously insisting that they're not responsible for the actions and opinions of TERFs and other misandrist trash.

I had maleness forced on me at birth. You chose to identify with a movement that is rife with androphobia and promotes harmful gendered stereotypes. You don't get to blame me for the actions of other men while pretending that your anti-male rhetoric isn't directly responsible for the rise of TERFs.

[–]Strikester101 6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

The first link is actually a troll pretending to be a radfem.

But you're not wrong. Radfems are obsessed with fighting misogyny, to the point they ignored that a certain person they were rooting for was a huge TERF.

The first link is actually a troll pretending to be a radfem.

Good to know, but I've met far too many feminists whose actions reflect this kind of thinking. The fact that they have the decency to shy away from statements that explicitly spell out it out doesn't really matter to me, any more than obvious misogynists shying away from openly misogynistic statements matters to them.

Radfems are obsessed with fighting misogyny, to the point they ignored that a certain person they were rooting for was a huge TERF.

A TERF is someone who treats trans women the way feminists treat cis men. As long as the conversation stays focused on cis men - i.e., as long as trans people are erased from the conversation, as they are in most cis feminist communities - TERFs and feminists get along just fine.

Empathy for men is the cure for toxic masculinity.

[–]steamedhamjob 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Wow, what an article. It really flies in the face of modern beliefs. I can't believe there is information like this out there and yet people still treat men the way they do without a second thought.

[–]AskingToFeminists 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I tried to post in the main subject, but I have a bug, so I post in reply to you :

-1 feminism is actively lying in order to hide women who perpetrate domestic violence in order to maintain the image of men as perpetrators and women as victims, and maintain the state funding they get on pretense of helping victims of DV but use for lobbying governments

-2 feminism is misandric at its core and infantilizes women.

-3 feminism is just wrong about the world. Its ideological perspective is in fact so wrong that if it ever get anything right, it is either by pure accident or because it was forced to face reality by an external factor. For example, the first feminist declaration, the declaration of sentiment, says "the history of mankind is the history of the oppression of women by men". This is blatantly false to an astounding degree, in addition to being profoundly misandric and misogynistic to amazing levels, and things have only gotten worse going on from there.

  • Ignoring, minimizing and/or denying the forms of cultural ans institution problems that men face. On the rare occasion men's issues are acknowledged, they're used to push the patriarchy narrative even though a patriarchy by definition would never hurt men.
  • Treating Men as a monolith (Toxic Masculinity, All men are trash, supporting policies that punish all men because 1 man did something wrong).
  • Using out-dated stats half-truths, and flat-out lies to justify their anti-male believes and policies.

[–]Egalitarianwhistle 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed. Data manipulation should not be so pervasive coming out of a department of a university. There is something wrong with this picture. It was 1 in 4 women on campus will be raped for over a decade until suddenly that stat went quiet. No retraction.

[–]spudmixMachine Rights Activist 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

a patriarchy by definition would never hurt men

Many feminists would dispute this - a patriarchy is very capable of hurting men. Patriarchy has been blamed for warfare, for strict gender roles, and for many other phenomena which undoubtedly harm men.

One source, although there are many

  • Too many misandrists in power. I said this elsewhere but "you may argue that those women don't represent feminism, in which case i would still say the movement is doing a pretty shit job at keeping people who don't represent them from positions of power within it"

  • The hypocritical notion that they fully understand the emotions and thoughts of men while in the same breath condemning men who attempt to say the same for women.

  • The constant push to say that the words we use are a powerful tool to reinforce sexist norms (Fireman vs firefighter) all while pushing terms like "toxic masculinity"

  • The idea that men and solely men have to be better when it comes to issues like romance. (there's a reason we don't see body positivity campaigns for men)

[–]mewacketergi 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's a very good way of putting it, thank you.

[+]cromulent_weasel1 points 6 years ago* [recovered] (7 children) | Copy Link

I really only have one:

  • I think that Domestic violence and sexual assault are things which both parties are equal offenders in (cf the Dunedin Study), whereas mainstream feminism paints them problems where men are the offenders and women are the victim.

So yeah. I think most major male problems aren't actually caused by feminism at all. Things like higher mortality levels, homelessness and worse access to mental health services etc I think are wider societal problems that we experienced even prior to womens liberation. Women aren't the cause of all of our problems any more than we are the cause of all of women's problems.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I can't agree with you more. The criticism that a lot of online feminists level against "MRAs" (but really, any dude who complains about male disadvantages but isn't completely on board with feminism) is that we attribute all male problems to feminism.

While there are MRAs who do this (and I basically think they're... just wrong), I think there are many like you who are saying that it's not that feminism is the cause of these problems, but that there are instances where feminism either gets the diagnosis wrong, or it gets it right in some way but then proposes a wrongheaded solution. Or it makes assumptions about the causes of male disadvantage that fits feminist paradigms without looking deeper into the issue. For example, reflexively attributing the education gap to "boys will be boys" type permissive childrearing while overlooking any possibility of teacher's bias against boys (which at least one study has shown evidence of) or other factors.

[–]Forgetaboutthelonely 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

There are also many problems that have been directly caused by feminism.

Like the term rape being defined in such a way that male victims are excluded, The duluth model, Etc.

And on top of that there's issues where they've actively made problems worse.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You could frame it that way. I would personally frame it more as a blind spot. I would situate the root cause of the exclusionary definition of rape in society's fucked up gender stereotypes (I am fairly certain that the notion that men rape women and not vice versa pre-dated modern feminism). However, I do acknowledge a prominent feminist like Mary P. Koss insinuating that female-on-male rape is 'not really rape' is/was insulting and damaging and can make the problems worse.

[–]Forgetaboutthelonely 6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Mary P. Koss didn't just insinuate.

She wrote men out of FBI rape statistics.

And the duluth model is clearly feminist. It even states so in the wiki.

At some point I find it hard that this blatand misandry is purely coincidental.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Yes, I think it's fair to say that she did harm to male victims while she should have known better. So it's probably more than just a "Blind spot", as I said.

I guess what I was trying to get at is, "men can't be raped by women" was a shitty gender myth that already existed in society, and she doubled down on this while fighting for female rape victims, making her at the very least a hypocrite and possibly a misandrist.

[–]Forgetaboutthelonely 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

have you ever heard interviews with her?

I would suggest looking one up.

IMHO It was very much on purpose

[–]cromulent_weasel 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Or it makes assumptions about the causes of male disadvantage that fits feminist paradigms

Yep. And when problems don't fit neatly into inter-sectional privilege patterns it's like there isn't anything there.

[–]heimdahl81 6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

  • Gender rights movements outside feminism are still potentially valid and men deserve the same ability to sustain a gender rights movements as women.

  • Misandrists should not be allowed to use feminism as a weapon and should not be enabled by feminists who protect them.

  • Equal responsibility is just as necessary as equal rights.

[–]thereslcjg2000left-wing male advocate 6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Let me preface this by emphasizing that I don't dislike feminism in theory, nor do I think most feminists are bad people. However, I think the current iteration of the movement has some very problematic aspects. I agree with most of what's been said here, and I have a few other points:

  • It uses fear mongering to make women feel like victims in situations that are not statistically dangerous (i.e. walking on the street).
  • It often uses an oddly right-wing capitalist rhetoric that suggests a person's worth is dependent on how high-paying and prestigious their job is.
  • It tends to use a "with us or against us" mindset that places people who support but critique modern feminism on the same level as raging red pillers and MGTOWs who think that feminism and the very existence of women are directly responsible for every imperfection our world has.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I wouldn't call myself anti-feminist, but most of the problematic aspects of it that I see derive from the following causes:

  • The rigid assumption that men are the oppressor class and women are the oppressed class and sexism is unidirectional.

  • The downplaying or ignorance of biological factors

That's about the main two.

EDIT: I'd add a third: the vagueness and changing definitions of terms such as "patriarchy".

[–]Blauwpetjevalued LWMA contributor 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

  1. Denying biological differences 2. Double standards around sexuality, shaming men 3. The myth that women had to 'win' equal rights fighting 'patriarchy', while in fact since the beginning of the 2th wave around 1970, society at large did everything to safeguard those 'equal rights' and more.

[–]Strikester101 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Elaborate the last part?

[–]Blauwpetjevalued LWMA contributor 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It is not rocket science. Of course at first society had to get used to women's lib ideas, but there was no big patriarchal power preventing them. Governments (in the west), institutions, education, media, film and pop stars, the UN, all cooperated to further chances for women.

[–]serpentineeyelash 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It's hard to boil down to just three, and of course I should say not all feminists, but here goes:

  • Feminism is an ideology that demonizes men by exaggerating female disadvantages, male aggression, and male power; while downplaying male disadvantages, female aggression, and female power.
  • Despite claiming to be a movement for gender equality, in practice feminism is a movement to increase the power of women in every circumstance and take the woman's side in any heterosexual relationship dispute.
  • The way men are told to submit to feminist women’s opinions is arguably systemic psychological abuse of males, and an ideological blank cheque which could be used to justify any exploitation of men.

I also agree with the bullet points listed by yourself, u/AskingToFeminists, u/TheToxicWyvern, u/Forgetaboutthelonely, u/cromulent_weasel, u/heimdahl81, u/Blobbartus, u/thereslcjg2000, u/Blauwpetje (though not so much his third point), u/ParanoidAgnostic, u/liztu_june, u/Sewblon, and u/czerdec. (And there may be others I missed.)

[–]ParanoidAgnostic 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'll start by clarifying that my objections are to the currently dominant incarnation of feminism. There have been and are many feminisms and I support a large subset of these.

  • It ironically reinforces the core of patriarchy which is female hypoagency and male hyperagency.

  • It is collectivist in its approach, seeing only genders, not individuals.

  • It controls the discussion on gender issues while being built almost entirely on the perspectives of women and actively rejecting the perspectives of men.

[–]liztu_june 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

  • Feminism wants to control male sexaulity while complain about how female sexaulity is surpessed.
  • Feminism what freedom to choose to be mothers but will complain when a man dosnt want to be a father before the child born.
  • Feminist will ignore there prilavge they have while accusing men of being prilvage.

[–]Sewblon 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

  1. Men suffer from disadvantages that are not caused by discrimination against women, like educational disadvantages for instance ( Stoet, Gijsbert; Geary, David C. (2015). "Sex differences in academic achievement are not related to political, economic, or social equality". Intelligence. 48: 137–151. doi:10.1016/j.intell.2014.11.006. )
  2. When it comes to deciding how a household interacts with itself, it is women who usually hold power. For how this worked historically, see this video by Lindybeige. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPmbDPsyt6I For how this works now, note that a Pew survey found that women make most household level decisions (The Boy Crisis by Warren Farrel).
  3. Domestic violence is not caused by men trying to maintain control over women in the face of changing gender norms. Women are as likely to be the one who initiated force as men are: (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/232559408_The_Gender_Debate_About_Intimate_Partner_Violence_Solutions_and_Dead_Ends). Domestic violence is as prevalent or more prevalent among same-sex couples as it is among opposite sexed couples. ( Stiles-Shields, C; Carroll, RA (2015). "Same-Sex Domestic Violence: Prevalence, Unique Aspects, and Clinical Implications". Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy. 41 (6): 636–48. doi:10.1080/0092623X.2014.958792. PMID 25189218. )

I know that that is more than one sentence per-point. But I wanted to show my sources.

[–]czerdec 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

Presents itself as scientifically valid knowledge: is not.

I oppose it for the same reasons most feminists oppose climate change denialism.

[–]GaborFrame 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

  • The terms "patriarchy" and "toxic masculinity" are so malleable and unfalsifiable that they are both useless and dangerous.
  • It is often asserted by feminists that one should reverse the genders in one's statements to see whether it sounds ridiculous, but it seems like feminists do not follow that advice very consistently themselves.
  • Equality of outcome is a pointless objective.
