Respectfully, as another Bi guy, both of these can be true, and it's likely that as bi men we aren't going to be on the receiving end of other bi men's shittyness towards gay men, just as gay men won't likely receive the inverse. But I can say that there are bi men who do treat other queer men as pieces of meat to fulfil their lust, and not as full people. It's not just about having flings, but about how other queer men are spoken about, treated, and viewed. It is okay to be bisexual and heterom…

14

Yeah, that's fair. I do find in general across queer spaces that there's this mentality we owe every woman loyalty because she's a woman, rather than like, the actual specific women who were allies if that makes sense. So then a lot of bi men really lean into that (plus wanting acceptance and it just being easier to be in a hetero relationship societally) and a lot of other queer men have this weird internalized sexism where they also trash all men a lot
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates11/08/26 04:02 PM
12

As a bi guy, I do think it's a two way thing: there are bi men seem to view gay men as flings or dicks and holes to use, and there are gay men who seem to think bi men are faking it or just straight guys looking to be spicy (or inversely, we're gay and trying to hide ir). Both are unfortunate and I think rooted in a mix of homophobia and misandry where we tend to see men and queer people as dirty and purely sexual beasts, rather than people with complex emotions, needs, and identities

Feminists and progressives pretty consistently interrogate and shame men for their preferences for women, and I seriously doubt a guy saying "I'm progressive, but I won't date a woman who has too many past partners or isn't sufficiently feminine enough (ie does all the trad fem stuff)" would go without criticism, so why should women be given exemption? Besides, the point isn't "women should date me" it's that women who view bi men as inherently disgusting or effeminate have inherently non progre…
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates11/08/26 03:46 AM
13

Considering that the reasons for rejecting all bi men tends to stem from viewing bi men as less masculine, promiscuous, perverted, or disease ridden, and is often voiced not with a "oh yeah I just don't find I'm attracted to them" but "ew gross, I would never date one", it's not a big leap to suggest that maybe that person isn't much of an ally. If support only exists when it's fashionable, easy, and provides something for you, it's not really support.

I'm sorry, you're going to site the man who committed genocide against Ukrainians as having created a more equal society for them?
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates01/08/26 01:34 PM

I don't have a problem with criticizing Ukraine, Ukrainians do so plenty. I have a problem with people saying a country that is being bombed and threatened with a loss of sovereignty and genocide by the country that has historically subjugated Ukrainians; genocide which will likely primarily hit men, should be denied aid because it does not meet moral standards that many countries don't. That is like me as a queer man saying that out of solidarity for the queer men in Gaza whose lives are at ris…

Real, and far too many westerners expect moral perfection out of Ukraine, a nation that has spent centuries being occupied, genocided, and oppressed, but have no problem with russia actively glorifying multiple of its colonial and genocidal regimes, nor looking past how for every criticism you can throw at Ukraine, russia has the same issue and usually worse
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates28/07/26 09:00 PM

It's wild to see people in this sub tell actual Ukrainian men that they hope Ukraine loses because of the militaristic misandry as though Ukraine losing and russia taking over would mean anything good for any Ukrainian, man or woman
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates28/07/26 05:07 PM

Criticizing a country's policies and government isn't a bad thing, especially when the point is to debunk something like the idea that men have it good in that country

So misogyny plays a role because of things women do disproportionately, but misandry doesn't even when men are the vast majority of work place deaths and often exploited for dangerous work, and you say that's just "workers issues"?

I'll be honest this is the third definition of patriarchy I've heard this week and no one seems to be able to agree if misandry is a part of patriarchy or not. Either way though, what the commenter you were responding to seems to be describing comes from a different social force than the ones typically described by patriarchy

Little weird to include something that is expressly rooted in misandry (ie hatred or prejudice against men and/or maleness) which the commenter was describing with a system that is supposed to be centred around misogyny

-Wagner -There can be multiple colonizers, and the US being a shit stain doesn't make russia any less of one. Are you seriously going to argue that the largest country in the world isn't a imperial state -It wasn't a coup, by definition. They explicitly said Ukraine isn't angelic. But russia has an actual neo nazi military group that has been mutilating, raping, murdering, and committing acts of genocide against Ukrainians and you're trying to present the largest country in the world with a thus far unending history of colonialism, authoritarianism, and genocide as being a moral equal to a country that is shockingly just like any other nation and not squeaky fucking clean. It can be true that Ukrainians want their nation to be free and not face genocide, and that many of those same Ukrainians may still very much not want to go and fight against a military that, for all its failures, is still a massive force in scale and is known for it's brutality against opposing combatants

>I WAS ON YOUR SIDE With all do respect, your original comment is a slap in the face to a lot of the users here. The idea that women are meek and men are strong is an idea imposed by men under patriarchy, not women under feminism/ misandry - two terms i’ve seen confused a lot in this subreddit >Blaming patriarchy does not mean blaming or victimising all men, because men are victims of patriarchy too, its a critique of a culture and a society. I know enough god awful abusive women, and have seen enough stats to say that I could make the same arguments about women's "reputation" but I don't, because that is still bigotry. And frankly whatever flowery language you want to use to justify your awful takes, will never change the many men I know who were denied any help or empathy while being actively abused and raped with this exact language. I won’t deny that there are a lot of reductive, reactionary, unproductive, selfish and downright stupid narratives floating around. But isn’t that just the typical mainstream? The things we’re fed as soon as we log into social media? Surely you can agree that there are equally stupid narratives coming from men in mainstream spaces? Sure; but it is factually incorrect to act as though feminists don't have those standards, nor that they never participate in pressuring men to behave certain ways. The other hypocritical part is that many feminists only extend preference to women; it's not exactly hard to find feminists who would attack a man for having trad standards, while being okay with themselves or other women (and men towards other men given context) having traditional standards for men, and just calling it positive masc…

I said my thoughts, I just am not alone in them; believe it or not that is a pretty common thing to happen, feminists also do that. And unlike you, I do not begrudge them of that because it is a stupid and vapid dismissal of criticism. I specified what I was talking about specifically when the person I was replying to asked. I'm sorry that you take issue with my comment but frankly you have offered no actual argument except that you seem to dislike someone saying feminists can be hypocrites.
/r/PurplePillDebate07/04/26 09:20 PM

It's not purely about it being biphobic, it's about if feminists are actually consistent on how they treat men in line with progressive and egalitarian values, and specifically how they treat their partners Men are allowed to point if feminists tend to be hypocrites or expect traditionalism from their partners (while not applying the same to themselves). Women are free to want whatever; but just as women can and do complain about men's standards and expectations, so to should men be allowed to a…

I'm not anti-feminist, I am just capable of recognizing that there are issues worth criticizing. Also a dumb criticism; the same point keeps being made because what it is a reply to is constantly said, and it's not like feminists or literally any other vague collection of ideologies don't also repeat the same points. While it is true many women have trad or trad like views of men and this often goes unexamined, it is not true of all women, just as it isn't true of all men, and many women do care about men, such as the many women who regularly participate on this sub

The women that think youre weak for "taking d up the ass" are not the same liberal women calling for equality. My point is that this isn't true. It is simply not true that women who "call for equality" are always genuine or apply it to everyone, and dismissing biphobia and homophobia towards men from feminists as not actually being from the self described feminists, or that many men consistently experience this hypocrisy from feminists, is wrong

I think we can hold a principle of don't body shame, but also not be passive about it. We don't have to insult on looks, but we can absolutely point out the hypocrisy, how pathetic it is, and make it clear as behaviour to be ashamed of. Yeah, a lot of people act like because others are shitty they are permitted to be. It's a common reaction regardless of what side you're on, but it's objectively unhelpful (speaking broadly; there's a bit more nuance but I'm not gonna get into on this comment) It also tends to coincide with taking credit for others' goodwill; I've noticed a lot of progressives and feminists will see that some other feminists, progressives, or just women are being open minded, compassionate, or showing consistent…

I would say that really varies on the feminists. Maybe within stricter academic circles, but amongst the laymen/laywomen, many definitely just parallel the old norms with new language. Even when they say "of course we want men to be in touch in their emotions" it's often still with the expectations of unyielding confidence, providing protection and security, and doing so in a nice, easily romanticized version of vulnerability and opening up. Outside of the UK and US, similar instances of feminists being against some sort of recognition or support for male victims and against female perpetrators (to various results) have occurred in India, Canada, Australia, and Spain, off the top of my head. It's big part of why a lot of us roll our eyes at feminism being a solution for our issues

Hey no problem. I haven't been in your exact situation but I've dealt with needing to deprogram my brain from the ideologies I was raised in, so trust me, I understand how awful it is, even without the other stuff you gone through Best of luck out there, I hope you find the peace and compassion you deserve

Jesus op I'm so sorry I don't have any advice for finding a therapist, but I'm sure they are out there. Maybe if there's men's abuse hotline or shelter they might have resources they can direct you too? If you're from Canada, the Canadian Centre For Men and Families is an example of this. Best of luck op, there's a light at the end of the tunnel, and at the very least this sub will be here for you as much as we can

Mild correction, but the accused weren't exclusively women, and were often persecuted due to perceived or claimed dissent against the Church. Not to say gender was irrelevant to how historical men or women were treated on respective issues, but it was not solely due to them being women
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates20/03/26 09:47 PM

While some of it is that, the fact that it is gendered when it doesn't need to be, and that the blame is put solely on boys and men despite also being potential victims and women being potential perpetrators, and it frequently turns into prioritizing misandristic statements over avoiding victim blaming

Respectfully, where is this serious feminist theory when it actually matters for us? In my country, Indigenous men compose of up to 86% of the murdered and missing Indigenous population, and the inquiry to missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls claimed that, when looking at their group, a minority of the missing Indigenous population, they claimed it was tantamount to genocide. Yet when an inquiry for the men was considered, it was feminists who said it's be inappropriate. In the UK, ma…

That, and blood isn't exactly an invaluable resource; we need it for medical emergencies, and it requires proper consent, collection, storage, and transportation. Why would you use it if you can test with synthetics? If the blood can be put towards more immediate and necessary use, why use it on something that can be test in other ways? While feminism did borrow the term from anthropology, how anthropologists tend to use the terms patriarchy and matriarchy is different from how they tend to be used by feminists and sociologists. One big one being how many feminists define patriarchy around "oppression" and matriarchy around "equality" (which really just means that those feminists define bad things as masculine and good things as feminine). That, and anthropology tends to recognize matriarchal and patriarchal structures as exist…

It's almost unbelievable how much liberals and progressives just doubled down on this stuff. Even though there were repeated warnings of how much it would backfire and end up hurting important causes and gains, and that backfiring happening, and now we're here. I'm convinced a lot of these people hate men more than they love women; even without it being just shitty and morally wrong on its own, it's just pragmatically such a bad move for any progressive movement to be this antagonistic and they …

Others have debated on which is more leftist, but fundamentally, many simply don't want to ally with people who dehumanize men and contribute to men's issues. Radical feminists tend to fall into that category, whether the radical means marxist or just more extreme. Being able to agree on somethings doesn't really negate dehumanization or the other problems, and it's not in our interests to ally with people who hate us as a default

thats 97 of every 100 women reporting rape lying That's not accurate. The majority of cases are neither proven true nor false, because both proving a rape occurred and disproving a rape (and most crimes, for that matter) wasn't committed by the accused are difficult, if not often impossible, to prove in a court of law. Dismissing the impact and extent of false allegations is a problem amongst progressives and feminists for sure, and your feelings based on your experience are understandable. But …

It's kinda reliant on ignoring the amount female predators and male victims, and requires you to assume that the motivation for the women you can't ignore was to be extreme pick me's, when they were just as much parasites and predators as the men who did what they did for the same reasons as the men

I was honestly surprised how many responses I got, but it does honestly make me feel better knowing how many people here aren't men; makes me feel a bit less alone if that makes sense. Plus, it's my general belief that a diverse range of perspectives being considered and allowed to criticize is the best prevention against dogmatism, so I'd like to make sure we allow for that

This is fair. I wish the community here was less volatile at times, having been in disagreements with people here where they get quite heated quickly, but I suppose that is also not unique to here, and it should be somewhat anticipated given the emotions on the topics here. That doesn't excuse poor behaviour though, and I think we should be mindful when we also criticize others for reacting this way when we try to present different opinions or facts they don't like

I'm not sure how to treat it cause on the one hand it's definitely not how I think any demographic should be spoken about, but at the same time they are speaking on how they feel and experience their body, so it also feels like deleting the comment also isn't the right way to handle it It sounds like gender dysphoria, and I think the best we can do as a community is offer support while expressing that we don't agree with the sentiments themselves

I’m not very persuaded by men who think, eg, that circumcision or conscription are feminist artifacts: that is historically improbable. Like all feminists I know personally, I’m opposed to both, so much as with the objection above to all men being lumped in with the patriarchy, it’s pretty alienating to see that kind of characterization. A lot of systemic issues when it comes to gender aren't really about being anti-whoever so much as about forcing people into their roles. So for women that can be historically limited economic or career opportunities, and pressures to become a mother, and for men that can be being forced to put yourself in danger and care for you being deprioritized because of some sort of other need or "greater good" (even when it literally makes no sense) Ukraine is in an objectively terrible position: russia …

I am aware of the anthropological definition, I studied anthropology. My problem is that many feminists expand the term far beyond the anthropological one, and beyond the one you are describing. Many feminists treat patriarchy like a mass conspiracy that is universal and has motives, always benefits men, and always hurts women. I am aware that isn't every feminist, but it is enough to be relevant to what patriarchy means from a descriptive lens, and at the very least makes it difficult to even t…

I support Ukraine, and I believe the west should be supportive; not least of which because Ukraine was pressured by the US to give up its nukes under the assumption that the Budapest memorandum would be honoured. Sure, there definitions that are more reasonable. But you talk to two different feminists, you get three different responses for what patriarchy is. It's used inconsistently, and it's only those who disagree with feminists who seem to be corrected on its "true" definition. Also, while I know there are well meaning feminists, I question how well a term that still ultimately links men and masculinity to the bad things (you can say women also uphold it, the word is still biased to because they are …

I'd say that Jewish advocacy groups and Muslim advocacy groups are often pitted against each other, and asian advocacy groups do get told to step back in favour of other groups. I think more progressives call out those cases, and it might be less frequent or prominent as with men, but there is a broad issue of progressives doing oppression olympics and zero sum thinking when it comes to talking about various groups issues; it's just especially prominent with men's issues

On some level, even if subconscious, I think they believe this because they know this is how they treat men and men's issues; they project their constant dismissing, downplaying, coverups, and contribution to men's issues onto men's advocates and assume that we will do the inverse. Of course it is a potential bias that men advocates could be more vulnerable to, but given how many disclaimers those who openly talk about men's issues already give, and that they constantly say they just want men to…

The idea that women had no influence or power, at least in the west, isn't historically accurate. There were and to some extent still are legitimate issues for women accessing certain forms of influence and power and it would be ludicrous to say that women are to blame, but women did have influence, particularly in the form of soft power, which was actually a part of why many upperclass women were opposed to the right to vote for women, as kind of stupid in hindsight as that sounds. Alberta's isn't really recent, but it's never been as prominent as now (though still a minority of the electorate) due to the more extreme cons taking control and potential US and other foreign interference. While I get the reasons for pessimism, there was collaboration with University of British Colombia with one of the specific concerns that the studies found being that men often feel unheard by healthcare professionals, and that the start of this was because of the crisis of men dying from preventable disease. So while I'm not expecting a miracle, I am approaching this some level of optimism for progress

I will say, while I think sociology has validity as a field, it is especially prone to issues of bias it seems, and I find unlike fields like history and anthropology which tend to encourage that you engage with the subject with as much neutrality and objectivity as you can (though that can depend on the topic), it seems kind of the opposite in a lot of sociology, but that might also just be that I've noticed those instances more

Sure. The humanities and social sciences are also the areas of study that we largely discuss here. The humanities, by virtue of what is studied, are not able to implement rigid means of measurement as something like physics; that's just the nature of the topics, the farther you are from just hard math, the more you will have to deal with issues of bias and subjectivity. But men's issues ultimately fall under these fields too, and we regularly use the studies and work that come out of these field…

To be clear, I don't think people are responsible in the sense of "you, as an individual, are to blame" but that when you are the citizen of a country, you, albeit to varying degrees, have some ability to impact what your country is. I don't agree that citizens should be punished for the actions of their government, but I also think it's untrue to say there is no obligation or responsibility. I think generally a good baseline is "don't trust people who hate everyone else in their own group" Not that it's better to be a bigot to others, but often prejudice against ones own group leads to projecting your own behaviours, or the inverse of being super biased towards your group which just ends up blocking any actually constructive dialogue

Yeah, unfortunately erasure of trans men and the weird expectation of them to be particularly chivalrous for some reason I think leads to us not hearing from them often From what I have heard, trans men often face a mixture of misogyny and misandry where they are treated as confused girls who need to be saved from themselves or dangerous men trying to convert women (at least, that's the case with terfs).

I think there's sort of a perfect male victim archetype that's developed within some progressive circles where through abuse or a violation of his personhood the man has "seen the light of women's suffering." Ideally this man was hurt by another man, but even if he wasn't, he gains no resentment of women for any reason, but may gain some for other men. One of the main arguments for why abortion is important, beyond basic bodily autonomy, is specifically so that those with uteruses who are raped aren't forced to carry the pregnancy to term. While this less common in mainstream discourse, many radfems consider transmascs traitors who prey on young girls and groom them, and there’s been reports of transmascs being attacked in public. Okay; I don’t particularly see spending my time weighing the net gains and losses of JP. I don’t like him, as I’ve said, and beyond that I mostly don’t think about him. You can have whatever type of relationship you have with him, I don’t care, but frankly it is really bizarre to get this mad about someone saying they don’t think a political personality has been a generally positive force in the world. I dunno about concisely, but male victims of virtually any violence lack statistical and legal recognition as well as equitable resources, men and boys have been falling behind on every level of education across the west for decades, with multiple studies showing evidence towards biases against boys in school (which then is compounded by factors like race and neurodivergence), men make up the majority of work place deaths, injuries, as well as homelessness. Being seen as a man is one of the larg…

neither. I dislike Jordan Peterson primarily for his role in the current conservative movement and his rhetoric of other groups, but as far as men are concerned he promotes pseudoscience and gender norms that have been harmful to many. However the goodman project from what I’ve seen still promotes many myths about men and male issues, just from a more progressive friendly lens, and generally I’m tired of the only mainstream talking points on either side being about what version of masculinity me…

yeah, I’m glad there’s some sort of push back against this thinking, but it’d be nice if progressives could ever just say “this is an issue in our spaces/with us/that I’ve had” instead of always framing it as some vague other who misinterpreted what they were saying but are themselves not progressive. men had to fight tooth a nail to vote because those in power did not want more people having a say in who was in charge. And many of the biggest opponents to women’s suffrage were other women, to the point where many suffragettes preferred the male votes on the matter because tended to be more neutral on it

this is also why the whole “ukraine should be neutral thing” is a frankly unethical argument. Ukraine has a long history of being used as a buffer and Ukrainian lives (primarily men’s) are treated as shields for other nations, something which Ukrainians shouldn’t have to owe to any other nation.

worth mentioning that as is the case today in Russia, the ethnic minorities were often sent to the slaughter before Russians, and Ukraine (as well as Belarus) has long been treated as a meat shield for Moscow, which of course means that men from these ethnic minorities were sent to die by the red army, and that the men from the places that acted as a buffer were considered the ultimate acceptable sacrifice in many regards. while you’re right that there is a discussion to be had about the reactionary right, it is also true that it’s not just feminism having bad PR. Feminists have bad history regarding their academic and legal influence on men’s issues and no amount of “men can join too” will fix that. I don’t think it’d be fair to say feminism is entirely bad, as there is good it has done and good members among it, and I think it has a place in the world still, but that doesn’t change why people on the sub have pre…

I don’t think most people here think feminism is solely responsible for men’s issues, but many feminists has greatly contributed to many issues within the modern era, so it’s hard to not see feminism as somewhat aligned with those ideologies, especially when feminists only seem to care about distancing themselves when the subject of criticism comes up, or when they’re trying to get men to just join them cause “we’ll totally support you too” with no real proof behind it. Feminism has the history …

people’s views on adopted kids having the same dynamics as bio kids is both often wrong and more importantly harmful to the adopted child. You can absolutely still be a parent to them and have a meaningful family dynamic with them, but the needs of foster kids are often different and more complicated and you can’t just swap them with biological kids. So saying that you should just be solving the problem isn’t very helpful to anyone

It would actually probably be good to bring in criminal rights more in discussions about men’s issues. It’s an important issue regardless, especially given it’s relations to undermining democracy and human rights, and it’s an area that men make up a vast majority of those affected by it, which as you said, becomes even worse with MoC and Lgbtq men

I think arguing from the point of being an anti-feminist rather than pro gender equality and men’s issues tends to go poorly. There’s no real point to it besides being anti one ideology, and tends to end up about being more of a contrarian than about consistent beliefs. So you usually just end up in superficial arguments about feminists being hypocrites online rather than arguments about deeper societal issues. The execution of Jewish people was not based on gender, but explicit nazi policy was to kill women immediately while keeping men for forced labor until they were too malnourished and exhausted to work. That last part is where it is gendered, and what I’ve been saying is gendered
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates06/10/23 12:36 AM

My point is that the Nazis did treat their victims differently based on gender. I don’t think men or women had it better but acting like the nazis didn’t view the Jewish women as worth keeping alive for any longer period of time because they didn’t see them as useful is ahistorical, and it’s an important note on how they viewed gender. I would think it dumb to argue that just because the Turks wanted to kill Armenians as an ethnic group and the Serbs wanted to kill Bosnians as an ethnic group th…

If who they kept around based on utility was based on gender, which was explicitly the case, I think we can argue that gender dynamics and stereotypes were involved. They saw both men and women as tools, but Jewish women were largely not useful tools to them, so they murdered them immediately. And that doesn’t mean Jewish men were lucky or better off, any who weren’t able enough were killed, and they were all destined to die after they were exhausted from their slave labor, but it does mean that…

/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates05/10/23 05:37 PM

Eh, it was still based on gender, just that there gender was determined as being not worth keeping for the work. I think the main thing that would come down to whether it counts as gendercide is that the Jewish men were still ultimately going to get murdered, they were just also made to do forced labor beforehand. But I don’t really think acting as though there were no misogynistic elements involved in how they selected who was immediately murdered really helps us
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates05/10/23 03:46 AM

Women and young children were often sent to the gas chambers before men because the nazis saw the men as more capable workers and would force them into slave labour until they were to exhausted to work anymore. This wasn’t the fate of all women but many were immediately killed when they arrived to the camps unfortunately (at least this is what I was told when I went to Auschwitz)

I think it’d be better if we treated biology as a sort of medium which socialization takes place on rather than the end all trait itself. When you paint the surface, tools, and paint all have properties that will trend towards bringing out certain aspects or being better for certain things, but we can’t act like you can predict what the end result will be, what processes the painting will go through, or treat the materials as the sole components of what made it. In the corrected study someone sent, the author mentioned a study that contrasted their own on the elderly, where in younger relationships women were the ones more likely to divorce, so there might be something to that. There’s this weird thing I’ve seen where bi people are considered more oppressed than lesbian and particularly gay men, and it confuses me. Not that biphobia isn’t an issue but the need to assert this hierarchy is concerning at the very least and feels out of touch with reality

It’d be nice to have a space for ourselves. I don’t go on the bi-subreddits a lot cause it’s either “I like all women and 1% of men” “I hate liking men” or “bi men are the only good men.” Not the most welcoming places to me but oh well

Like 90% of the advice men get when it comes to insecurities is basically just “be confident, fake it, no one cares get over it” and then act surprised when men get good at that tactic for legal reasons I need to clarify that wasn’t a real statistic

Anecdote related to this: from junior high to high school I sucked at math, but I developed a very easy to use formula on math tests: if the question is asking who between a boy and a girl is right, always assume the girl. I always got those questions right (I did also actually do the questions to be on the safe side but I was never wrong in assuming it was the girl)

I’m guessing if it’s on a University campus, it’s trying to target this message more towards male friend groups and fraternities, since the latter is something that most men will reliably have in comparison to a romantic relationship, and might be more comfortable with than other people in their lives

I can get behind the idea that what we may think is objective reality can actually be reflective of the background we come from, and as such shouldn’t assume things to be necessarily be objective since collective bias can be an influencer in such things, but the solution to that problem isn’t to be even less objective. I can’t understand people who can wrap their heads around preexisting biases potentially tainting areas of science and academia, and then advocate for more subjectivity as a solut…

Man, it’s depressing looking at the sub. No matter what, it seems they can’t view any criticism of them, or anything that puts any question on their perspective as in good faith, everyone has to be bad and evil. I mean, maybe you could, but ultimately I don’t know if there’s much point. Any social movement or ideology will have some collective biases, and the best way to counter that is to allow other ideas to exist. I think you can post and join, and it doesn’t hurt to have other viewpoints, especially if they cover the majority opinion’s blind spots. That being said, don’t expect to be agreed with. While I think most in this sub are well aware that not every men’s issue is rooted in feminism, the reason feminism gets talked about so much here is because there aren’t many leftwing spaces that do, at least on the men’s rights front. My personal feelings on prostitution and strippers aside, I think as long as it’s two or however many adults with full agency it’s fine. Basically looking at the experience of Eastern European stereotypes in conjunction with male stereotypes, or the stereotypes that are predominantly targeted at men. /r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates10/01/22 09:30 PM

So to elaborate more I suppose, the character that sparked this all was a Ukrainian woman, who are unfortunately often subject to many stereotypes that can put them at legitimate risk. The stereotypes about Ukrainian women and Eastern European women tend to get more focus for the reasons you’d expect, as well as their consequences for the women and countries being rather clear. However there are also a lot of stereotypes about Eastern European men, and while this post doesn’t go into some the hi…

Don’t worry, I think your comment is pretty on the mark and not one that most would find silencing. It’s definitely a complicated matter. I still don’t understand why Bi people are considered more oppressed. Like yeah people being asses about our identity and the whole pick a side thing sucks ass but that’s neither any sort of enforced systemic thing nor insanely more egregious than what gay men and lesbians go through
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates05/01/22 10:09 PM

Jeez, that’s awful. It’s weird how many people do shit like that. Before I was out I had all the fuckin ally and lgbtq girls (plus some progressive guys) I know constantly try to tell me I’m closeted and make jokes about it or ship me with my friends. It was only the two gay guys I knew and my not super progessivey straight male friends who were respectful of me, so they ended up being the people I came out to first. That’s fair. I suppose there is something to be said about being charitable with the generalizations, and perhaps that person did truly mean it in those more charitable ways. That being said it was also more so a gateway into getting other’s thoughts on the issue as it’s far from the first time I’ve encountered the issue. Assuming you mean why the people I’m talking about separate bi men, I’m guessing it’s cause a lot of it is in the context of dating, and specifically women dating. So gay men aren’t gonna be part of that obviously, and I’m gonna guess maybe trans people might feel a little too taboo regarding dating discussions, but it’s also possible I just don’t come across it a lot

So rereading my post, I think I should have clarified it’s not the liking bi-men romantically or sexually that I generally have a problem with (assuming they aren’t super weird about it and respectful of boundaries and what not) so much as the moralizing portion of it. The original post I saw had a rather clear bend to it regarding the moral endorsements aspect, and I find that particularly concerning with a crowd that often takes “the personal is political” thing to heart. Given sub rules, and …

Yeah, there’s a sort of fashionability in “respecting” certain identities based on what woke idpol claims at the time. It seems to affect what people are willing to claim they care about and also results in weird framing of issues when they fall into the peripheral the woke crowd, particularly when it comes to issues of cultural representation and conflict
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates05/01/22 07:38 AM

I suppose it depends a little bit on what you mean by woke. We should absolutely avoid things like outrage culture, needless division, and complete disregard of context or intent. However I’m also pretty sure you don’t mean that (just a hunch, y’know) My issue with what I guess is the more reasonable or nuanced stuff, is both a tendency to simplify and a tendency to work in absolutes around culture and society. As others have said, woke spaces tend to simplify, and in the gender realm it often t…

Ideas are built by disagreement and dissection. Everyone has their biases and nobody is able to perceive or account for the totality of reality. Because of that, while there are ideas we must dispute, it is important we be open to others, even if just for a sliver of truth they provide, as it will strengthen our ideas and our ability to help others. As for Bell Hooks herself, while we can talk about the flaws in her approach and her invocation of patriarchy theory (as we should, considering her …

I don’t have a ton to add to this, I just thought it might be good to shed some light on a piece of history I never learned about, and the issues men of that generation faced. I’m certainly glad to live in a country with no draft and a time where medicine is much more advanced, but still, a lot of war remains the same, and even in the article, it feels like a weird lack of focus on the pain the men experienced, rather more focused on the medicine and art parts, or how their loved ones felt, rath…

Agreed. I think it’s also worth pointing out that when boys grow up seeing that as the ideal for them, they’re of course going to show greater interest in it. We should never assume it’s just a biological thing
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates06/12/21 06:02 PM
27

Even if it’s biologically true, why should that matter? We actively built tons of shit out of spite of “biology” why should that be different here? Besides, if that were men’s purpose, then we’d have an actual ingrained urge to die in war, not to resist a draft
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates06/12/21 12:53 AM

Right now, while there is some action and organization, it does often feel like most just sit and complain (including me). Partially I think it’s fear of being ostracized, but we could be probably do more to create resources and action to help men
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates25/11/21 07:11 PM

I don’t think it’s necessarily a good thing to have one unified movement. Within an ideological group biases and community narratives will inherently develop, partially as a natural way to create comradery, as well as a way to reinforce said biases. It’s important to be able to have a number of ideologies and perspectives available because there won’t be one that gets the full objective truth, and so they can serve to balance each other out

The weaponized incompetence thing seems to be framed as another “men bad” thing
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates17/11/21 07:40 AM

/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates09/11/21 07:56 PM
11

Yep. Granted it’s still a little more complicated but there’s been numerous cultures that are predominantly female lead, where things are passed matrilineally, or where women have the greater economic power. Even in “patriarchal” societies this generally isn’t the case, and with larger societies subcultures which are arguably matriarchal can and often exist.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates30/10/21 06:53 PM

Evolutionary anthropology stated all cultures had the same inevitable end point, and that western European societies were that end point. The racist part was not saying that societies could do better, but the insistence of calling other cultures inferior, and often diminished what said cultures were capable of. It also assumed all cultures go through the same types of development which is inaccurate
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates09/10/21 07:53 PM
4

Absolutely. It’s also worth noting this evolutionist idea was used a lot in glorifying capitalism as the most evolved economic system, and then later by communists as they suggested themselves to instead be the most evolved. I think that ties into what you said about generations and progress, as it has both been used as a way to ignore flaws and impose ideologies on to others, which I hadn’t really thought of until you mentioned that

Like if my straight male friends call me fag as a joke I don’t care, it’s harmless and funny in that context for me, whereas if some stranger calls me that I’d take it as a warning at best. Same extends to gay and bi women, I don’t really care about them using the word itself. It’s more the hypocrisy of policing who gets to say what while claiming that for themselves that I dislike

Eh, I think more likely for many it’s an expression of identity, as there’s sort of a cultural script in mainstream culture and gay sub cultures around gay men being hyper promiscuous and flamboyant, the latter read as feminine. Since “masculine” gay men already don’t fit the cultural script of being flamboyant, I think they may tend towards am assertion of identity that involves downplaying those attributes more. That’s definitely not the entire story, and most of its just a bunch if unknowable…

I’m not particularly interested in philosophy at the current moment, but I think I find a similar amount of solace in anthropology. I find it helpful to be able to observe things in a sort of neutral as possible way and appreciate a lot about humanity from it. I can’t speak what the dominant opinion is academically, but in terms of activist spaces, at least from what I’ve seen it’s often used in a rather simplistic and black and white way. I may have misspoken in terms of intersectionality, as intersectionality with its given definitions and framework should be able to make room for a more nuanced view, and it’s more an issue of implementation in activism and politics. The thing with your example is that it is often presented as misogyny backfiring on…

I mean trans men in this case, sorta like what you meant about the baby talk. It’s sorta like they build a trans guy for the purpose of tearing down cis men, and it in my mind comes with this sort of implication of still being not men, if that makes sense. It’s sorta like when they’re like “you’re just mad you were beaten by a woman” thing, which kinda just reinforces that men should feel bad about not performing as well as a woman, but in this case it’s like a weird way to pit trans and cis men…

I think partially cause we aren’t reminded at every corner even though that is the statistic. News tends to emphasize female victims and in general those stories are talked about more often. Even within family, my sister was given a talk and I wasn’t, so I think it indicates our tendency to be more hyper aware of women’s safety, to a point that is probably not helpful

Citation wise: if I happen to come across examples I’ll try linking them, but this is a purely anecdotal thing based on twitter and pop culture, and not something particularly academic (I don’t even know how I’d go about that) so I can’t say it’ll mean much to you. Anyway, I don’t mean they’re being mocked as not masculine enough, I mean it mirrors the man up phrase a lot of the time as a sort of “shut up and stop whining” thing. The basis for each is different, but I think many times the affect…

I mean that “man up” is seen by some as a misogynistic statement as well as damaging to men

So this was something I found on instagram (cropped for privacy reasons) I’m sure most of you are used to these kind of arguments, but how would you go about these sorts of arguments and what are your thoughts on it?

As well as other criticisms here, it’s an innately female centric movement. That’s not a problem in and of itself but it is an issue when it has become the default of gender issues to the point where men’s issues are still female centric

They cracked due to tight lacing, which I did not say was without adverse effects. What I said, is that it was not common to, and corsets without tight lacing did not have these massive health effects. I didn’t and don’t usually expect people to read links, and the only reason I asked you to after the fact was because it became clear you weren’t going to listen to me so I figured I’d suggest the links, which I had already posted. Thank you for insulting me, it was very nice to read. I will injec…

There were ones made to lace in the front specifically for that reason, and again, women did rock climbing, and hiking, and many other demanding activities, and were fine. Maybe there was an era of corsets that I don’t know of where this wasn’t the case but by the late 1800’s there were corsets designed specifically for physical activity and labor. The photos of tight lacing we see are largely from fancy editing tricks they used during photo processing and using clothes to exaggerate the hips an…

https://nyamcenterforhistory.org/2015/05/29/did-corsets-harm-womens-health/ https://youtu.be/rExJskBZcW0 https://youtu.be/zNwTqanp0Aw I have a hard time believing that prostitutes would avoid something seen as attractive and more beautiful given the profession, especially when tight lacing sure as hell wouldn’t have anything to do with modesty by Christian standards, but weirder has happened I guess. But again, given that women shaving in Europe wasn’t popular for a long time due to it being ass…

They had work corsets and corsets did not displace organs. The major health concern regarding corsets was atrophy as it supported back and core muscles and so constant use meant the muscles weren’t being exercised enough, which was rectified by taking it off for a few hours a day. Tight lacing was extremely discouraged and frowned upon by general society, and the reason we hear about it today is in part because it was seen as such a crazy thing back then. Women went rock climbing and biking in t…
