You're there for your son, that's it. Just try to remember that when you're there and you'll be ok. I know it's hard.

I have a hard time when I don't have my son for 5 days (5-5-2-2 schedule). I exercise every day, try to be productive, make myself meals, dated for awhile, etc. Still feels empty. I'm searching for something that will bring me some fulfillment when I am alone. Not quite there yet. Thanks for the positivity OP, it gives me hope.

That's right! Just focus on today. Make a plan for today and execute. Do the same tomorrow. Repeat. We are here for you OP.

This feels like it belongs on a different sub. Doesn't quite track here. You sound like the women my ex was talking to before she bailed on her family.

I think this is pretty normal. A lot of divorced women want the facade of a beautiful life/family to put on the internet so they can feel 'normal'. That feeling of being replaced is real, I felt it too, and it's ok to feel that way. How else should we feel? Empowered? Strong? It feels like shit. Just don't dwell on it. The thing is, once she finds a replacement for the new guy he'll be on Reddit breakup threads going wtf happened!!?? Lol.

Woah. 6-for-6 with my ex. That's crazy. The Taylor Swift one at the end, I didn't know that was a thing. She was obsessed.

This is definitely a thing. It's like a virus or plague or something. At the end of my marriage, most of my ex's friends were divorced women. She spent a ton of time with one in particular that was constantly on the hunt for a new man. Yeah, I couldn't see the forest for the trees apparently.

You'll be ok man. I bet if you viewed the post and/or comment history of a lot of the guys in this thread, it would give you, at the very least, a little hope. But mostly, it should show you that a lot of us have been through the exact same thing and you're not alone. Edit: By hope I mean life after divorce. I don't want to give hope where there is none. Sorry bro. I kinda ruined my own comment there, doh!

I had a similar situation, as did many here, but yours really hits home for me. We had the kids, the big house, two new cars, two good jobs, vacations, retirement accounts in great shape, by all accounts a perfectly stable, great life. In my mind I was excited for the future, even if the present was a bit mundane. I also was/am more of a homebody than my ex, and she started going out a lot without me. I thought I was being a good, understanding husband by not interfering with her fun nights out …

I don't know for sure but I think he's going through a divorce also. He had a 2.5 million palace on cape cod. I assume his ex is living there. Thanks. I tell myself that I have no idea what their relationship is like, it could be a disaster for all I know. I go back and forth between being positive/indifferent to negative/fortune-telling.

I'm in the exact same boat dude. 50/50. New guy in my son's life, pretty much living at her house, and we're not even divorced yet. It is incredibly hard. Nothing else we can do but make the time we have with our kids special. My problem is I feel kinda useless when I don't have him with me.

That's terrible of your ex, and the new guy. As difficult as it is for someone to endure a divorce and everything that goes along with it, you shouldn't be subjected to your ex's bullshit narrative that feeds the new guy's ego. You'll always be his dad no matter what this douchebag says.

Sounds familiar. The steady, stable, dependable, thoughtful husband, staying by his wife's side through all the chaos she creates, only to be tossed to the side when it gets to be 'too much' for her to deal with anymore. You said it. You're better off. We're all better off. It takes time to realize that, and I'm still working through it all, like you. Good days and bad. At least you have a new woman around to keep you company!

You make some good points. I honestly know nothing about the guy, other than what I wrote. His financial situation could be a mess, who knows. My brain tends to go right to the negative, which I'm constantly working on. I think we all know how slippery of a slope that way of thinking is during divorce. I'm glad you're doing so well. I'm looking forward to picking up a new hobby or two soon, as you did with golf. I've found keeping busy is so important during times like this. I am coaching my son…

Yeah you said it, all these milestones are absolute gut punches. Talking through it in therapy is good, which I do, but it's sort of fleeting. I'm still left with the racing thoughts and alone time. Silver lining is that I've made it through all of the punches, and I always start to feel better after a week or two. The problem is that another one always comes up. Like it never ends! It's exhausting. Keep on keeping on man. We're all in this together.

Your kids will love coming to your house if you make it a place where they feel comfortable and happy. They won't care if it isn't as nice as their mom's house, because you'll be there. Sure, it isn't always going to be perfect, and it won't be perfect at their mom's house either.

You speak of your cheating ex-husband like you're proud of him. He got remarried the same year you got divorced? It's admirable of you to think of him that way. How did you get to that point, mentally?

I don't mean to devalue your situation. It's hard. It's really hard. But imagine yourself at 45 saying this and wishing you were 32 again. You are in the prime of your life, take advantage of the freedom and your youth and go get some new ass!

In the last 2 years, my ex spent the majority of her 'me' time with a divorced friend. Her friend was obsessed with finding a man, so looking back, my ex was probably in a lot of situations where she was talking to single men while being a wing-man for her friend. Probably not good for me and our marriage. Also, most of her good friends at work are divorced. So yeah, it tracks. She's already in a serious relationship (we separated in September of '24) and aren't officially divorced yet. Oh, and …

How bout this? Don't give in. Why do you feel compelled to give in? Take control and be the Dad and the man you know you are. She's gone. Don't let her run the show.

Stay in the house. Talk to a lawyer. Be around your son as much as possible. Record all conversations with her in case she tries some bullshit to get you in trouble. Don't let her bully you out of what is rightfully yours. I know it's hard being around her, but you have to think of your son first. Your future is at stake. Stay strong man! You will get through it.

Why did you leave the house? She wants a divorce, she should've left the house. I'm assuming no kids here? You'll be ok man. It sucks for a long while, but you have to keep going. Keep living your life. Go do stuff. Eventually you'll remove her from the pedestal you have her on and realize what kind of person she really is and that you deserve better.

For her to say she hasn't been interested in you as a romantic partner for 14 years is brutal. So basically she has been lying to you for 14 years? That's a long time man. I feel for you. I'm sorry this is happening.
/r/Divorce_Men12/03/25 05:12 PM

That is exactly what happened
/r/Divorce_Men11/03/25 10:31 PM

Thanks. We did one mediation session, which in hindsight we didn't really need. At the time we didn't know what we were doing so we thought it would be a good idea. I started the paperwork in January, filed everything in February, done in March.
/r/Divorce_Men11/03/25 10:30 PM

It was pretty amicable. We handled everything on our own, no lawyers, just one mediation session because we didn't know what we were doing. We did all the paperwork on our own. The judge asked us a bunch of yes or no questions and that was it. I guess there wasn't much for him to do. I'm grateful for how 'easy' it was, despite my life being completely upended.

We separated so she could have some 'space' and 'time away from the relationship'. Did the nesting thing so we weren't living together anymore, just home for the kids. 2 weeks into the separation she asked for divorce. I found UTI meds right around then, and just a bunch of other signs pointing to another guy. We're 5 months into it now, and she is planning on introducing our son to the guy in a couple months. Her daughter from her first marriage has already been staying at the guys house with h…

Don't leave the house until you talk to a lawyer and figure out the best course of action. And she has no reason to be honest with you about seeing a new guy. In my situation I asked the same question to her, many times over many months, always no. Guess what? There was someone else.

What!!?? What a piece of garbage your 'friend' is. Know this: the two of them will crash and burn, if they haven't already.

I try to think of the people who I knew during my marriage who got divorced. I didn't care all that much. Now I'm in the same boat. People were willing to listen at the beginning but I noticed pretty quickly that it's not something people want to talk about or acknowledge unless they've been through it themselves. I guess either people don't give a shit, or it makes them uncomfortable.
/r/Divorce_Men07/02/25 12:41 PM

That's so messed up. Unfortunately it seems to be very common. I don't think I'll ever understand why people enter a marriage when they know it will fail at some point. I would write the guy an anonymous letter or something so he can get out of it before he has kids and his whole world blows up in his face.
/r/Divorce_Men08/01/25 01:29 PM

Thanks. Once she asked for the divorce I stopped being her friend. We basically only talk about the kids and the divorce process. I don't want to know her anymore. It's just this one thing that I can't quite get past yet.

Every day does get a bit easier. This is just another roadblock to get past, maybe the hardest one so far. I know deep down it doesn't matter what she's doing and that all I can do is focus on what I can control. It's just hard. Thanks for the comment.

I hate my ex too. I really only feel it when I'm around her. When I'm not, I think about the future when I'll barely have any contact with her at all. Unfortunately I'll always have to be in contact with her because of our son, but that's it. I think I hate that I still have to see her often. I hate her voice, I hate her face, I hate her. It will go away someday but right now the hate is strong with this one.

I'm trying to get away from the 'she'll see the error of her ways' kind of thinking. My divorced friends tell me she'll ask to come back at some point, because it happened to them. I don't want her back, and as much as I'd love the validation of a regret-filled text or email, it probably ain't gonna happen.

Everyone on this sub has been there. You feel lost, maybe used, maybe duped or tricked in some way. The woman you knew, or thought you knew, is not that woman. Focus on yourself and nothing else. Unless you have kids then it's different but... Best advice I ever got was 'Be selfish', because I never put myself first.

Therapists are good for this. There's no worry of them being annoyed or bored when you're sharing your feelings and talking about your trauma. My family has been great so far for me (along with therapy). The people who care come out of the woodwork it seems. The people who don't disappear into the background.

I have good days and bad days. Today is a bad day. I was good until my friend cancelled plans for later and that really f'd me up for some reason. Normally I wouldn't give a shit, but damn, this is hard. Looking forward to tomorrow!

Just be selfish man. Onto the next one. Actually get a few going at once. That's my plan when I finally get out of this divorce process.

Oof. I can feel this one. Fucking a 22 year old? I don't even know what I'd do if that happened to me. I hope you're not trying to win her back at this point because she sucks and doesn't deserve to be in your presence. I can't give you financial advice because I could use some of my own. I would say, since you seem to be pretty comfortable financially, is to get a lawyer. And fuck her, remove her from your insurance! Let her figure it out with her new 'man'.

I'm happy your kids have adjusted and are doing so well. That's great. I worry about my kids all the time, and hope that I can create a good life for them after all this. The thought of dating makes me ill right now. I'm 45, and like you said, I have this feeling that when the time comes when I'm ready to get back out there, it kinda feels like it'll be too late for me. I hear you. Nothing out of the ordinary so far. She works, makes a good income, close to mine. She was married before and is getting child support for her daughter. We have a son together. So far we both just want to sell the house, split the savings, 50/50 custody of our son (and my step daughter but I have no legal rights there), and just move on. No talk of alimony or child support.

Man, I hadn't thought about it that way. Dating a divorced woman who initiated the divorce with her ex. So more or less dating your own ex. Ugh. It was a huge problem in my marriage. My wife was not present most of the time when we were home together because of her phone. Social media and texting for hours on end, every single day.

She has always wanted to spend more money. She's jealous of her friends who get to spend like crazy. I handle all the finances and keep us secure. We still go out to dinner, take the kids to fun places all the time, always have a big Christmas, we do a big vacation once a year. It's never enough. I don't gatekeep the money by any means. I can relate. My STBXW doesn't like me, as a person, anymore. I'm not really any different than I was when we first met, or when we got married. Sure our life is very different with kids, stress, the day-to-day grind of life, but I'm the same guy just trying to take care of my family. But she says we have no connection. Nothing in common. The grass is green where you water it I've seen this before and I hope to remember it forever. This is marriage man. So many of us take things for granted, on both sides of the relationship, and things decay until they can no longer grow back. I'm definitely guilty of not watering the grass. And so is my wife, STBXW.

That's good advice. I wish my wife would exhaust all avenues, but she's completely checked out. We're currently separated and splitting time at the marital home and a rental. My wife and I split time between the two places. Days at home with my kids feel right and good and I feel a purpose. The days I'm away, like you said, I feel empty. I try to keep busy, I work out, I go fishing, I journal, but it just hurts.

Yeah. What sucks is that all of our problems were fixable. We just never made an effort to fix them the last couple years. So definitely 50% my fault, but I never wanted a divorce. Really well written. I think most guys on this sub can relate to something in what you wrote. This really resonated with me She latched onto me, thinking I was better than her—a way out of a life she wanted to escape. To her, I was an easy route to something better, offering a kind of fatherly stability she craved because her own father failed her, whether through neglect or cruelty. She longed for romance, for the perfect love she saw in movies. And she knew how to act the part—playing the role…

Yup, you're right on. I know my wife will be able to find another guy easily (if she hasn't already). She's pretty, and in great shape, and outgoing. But seriously what is out there waiting for her? You are doing it right. You are the man, and every person out there with any integrity would agree. Screw her, and keep doing what you're doing. You mentioned the person you were before all this, that person is still there. You'll find that person again, and another woman will see you for who you are and will…

She fixates on one or two negative things and ignores everything else. The positive experiences hold much less weight than the negative ones. Where I'm the opposite. It's just too bad man. It's too bad. Nothing to do about it now.

Your wife told you she was 'wearing a mask'? I now know my wife kept it going because she never thought she would get to the point of divorce. And here we are. She could have just told me what the fuck was happening and maybe with some therapy we could have figured it out. Nothing happened, nobody changed, and there you go ... divorce.

Thanks. I just don't know how people do this. The separation was hard enough. It's like starting at square one, where I was a couple months ago.

I probably shouldn't have posted today and let it sink in for a week or two. It just happened a few hours ago so I'm having a hard time processing. The kids will get everything I can give them. They deserve that.

I started therapy again when the separation started and I work out everyday. It all helps for sure. This is a fresh wound though. It just happened today.

Yeah, that all makes sense. I'm glad you and your GF are more in tune with each other. That must be pretty fun.

At the beginning of all this I asked her about cheating a handful of times when we'd be talking through things. Even if she just had feelings for someone else and she wanted to see if it may go somewhere, just friggin tell me so I can move on. She was adamant that she wasn't/isn't doing anything like that, so I have to take her word for it. There really hasn't been anything in her behavior to suggest cheating. I thought about recording devices and car trackers and it just felt gross. If it turns…

Well, that's hard to say. Emotionally, before we separated, we had our ups and downs, which I always thought was normal. I never thought we would split. I think she is thinking there is something better out there for her, emotionally and physically too apparently.

That is really messed up. To do it at all is bad, to do it in the family home is really bad, and to do it while he's in the next room is about the worst thing I can think of. What a piece of shit.

The dreams man, I hear you. They're brutal. Pretty much every night I have a dream about my wife (we're separated, and most likely headed for divorce). Sex dreams, or just dreams where she wants to be close to me, or we're out somewhere laughing and having a great time. Then I wake up, and it's a punch in the gut.

Costa Rica is supposed to be awesome. Safe and beautiful and lots of excursion type stuff. I have never been but always wanted to go.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
