It's odd how the most popular stats on the wage gap are the non-multivariate analysis ones which ignore proper scientific methodology entirely. It's not odd at all, those are the only ones that can be used to support what the people in power want us to believe. Popularity isn't based on truth, it's based on usefulness to those who get to influence what becomes popular.

What is the likely breakdown, anyway? I know there were some studies a while back that put "blatantly false" at a single-digit percentage that roughly matched the conviction rate, but is there anything vaguely solid that tries to categorize the middle 80-plus percent?

The left isn't really about class though. It's about trying to re-make (as opposed to carefully tweak) society to solve all our problems. Left vs right is about your approach to Chesterton's Fence. One of the popular versions happened to be about class, but that's not the only way that that attitude shows up.

Backnof house is almost always entirely male, front of house is almost entirely female. Guess which group functions as a team with little friction, clearly defined roles, and camaraderie. There's at least the possibility that it's related to "who serves which customer and gets tips from them" being closer to zero-sum than what the kitchen people are faced with.

The thing about these AI models, is that they only know what they were trained on. At least on their hosted products, OpenAI has been known to modify prompts before giving them to the model. Mostly around "diversity" sorts of topics. They fed the model basically all of the examples of writing they could get their hands on It is not out of the realm of possibility that they pre-censored the training data, like how the latest Stable Diffusion release (make images from a text prompt) specifically d…

Does me hating on the ideology of white supremacy mean I hate white people? No of course not And yet, I see people called white supremacists for refusing to hate on whites, or for pointing out bigotry. For example the "it's ok to be <race>" thing. Does me hating on ISIS mean I am Islamaphobic? If you forget to actively highlight how "normal" muslims don't agree with them? Yes, you will get called that.

entertainment preferred Interesting. I know for acting and whatnot they can have hard requirements for things that would normally be illegal (like I think hooters uses this to specifically hire just women?). Because it's an actual necessity of the job (same example, nobody wants to go stare at moobs). But I wouldn't have thought a preference would be allowed, since that implies it's not an actual necessity to do the job.

What people want in the bedroom vs what they want during the day vs what they're stuck with at work, can all be very different. Personally I think 50/50 for general life stuff sounds good, and either one sounds ok for bedroom time. The one time my wife stumbled across some "surrendered wife" literature (basically, religious-themed lifestyle D/s) I had to talk her out of it because neither one of us has the right personality for that to be even close to working.

The fact that these people attack liberals without realising that they themselves are liberal for supporting men's rights and issues creates the one thing I can't stand: hypocrisy. No. You're assuming that both opinions are only held for purposes of group affiliation. But some people actually believe things sincerely rather than just because they want to fit in.

The court could’ve thrown it back to the legislature. What exactly would this look like? They can say "this previous decision was wrong" or "this law is contrary to overriding law". I'm not aware of any way for them to explicitly put something on the legislature's TODO list.

criticizing the wrongs of radical feminism But you can say "the Duluth model is rooted in bigotry" without trying to tie it to feminism. It's a wrong and it needs to be criticized (and corrected) and this is independent of where it came from. The double standard around DV/IPV that the recent JD/AH trial and the reactions to it showcased, is wrong because it's wrong, not because it's driven by feminist propaganda.

How did those couples get together? Rather like online dating focuses on appearance as a first filter, I'd think that actively going out looking for someone would tend to disproportionately focus on surface level things. Crimes are defined by criminal code. Whether a crime has been committed or whether someone is a victim is defined by this code. If it’s unclear, it goes to court for a jury to decide. Close, but not entirely. For example, countries that define rape in a way that it legally doesn't apply if the victim is a man. Partly, yes, the meeto thing was about demanding to be believed unconditionally. But also, some small portion of it was "this is harmful even though it isn't actually illegal". And even if…

Menslib is explicit that they're a feminist space. It's not that criticizing feminism has too much chance of leading to problems, it's that criticizing feminism is itself inherently bad.

Feminism isn't a left wing ideology, it's centrist. Thirdly, the policy is based on the presumption that all women experience delibitating periods, which is not true. Oh, I thought this was part of the "decolonization" thing, and they're trying to bring back how a fair few ancient societies isolated menstruating women as "unclean" or whatever their equivalent concept was.

Is "how likely to apply" and "how likely to be accepted" really the right way to look at it? I'd think it's "number of jobs investigated" which is about the same, and "number of applications needed to get hired" which is lower for women (it's just another way of framing that same 16-20% from the chance of applying or being accepted). I suppose there's also number of offers before accepting one which would be the gap between "number of offers looked at" and "how likely to apply" vs "how likely to…

The links to related terms show that "incapacitated" is distinct from "legally incapacitated". Which means that "legally incapacitated" is in fact not "the legal definition of incapacitated" as you claimed above, but probably something more like "incapacitated with respect to doing legal (as in related-to-law) stuff"; ie no having someone you know is drunk sign contracts. Even today, some couples will agree that one of them (usually the man) works and the other (often but not always the woman) stays home with the kids. I remember reading some old Western novel as a kid (old as in, they quite likely would have been new around when my grandparents or great-grandparents were kids; and our physical copies of most of this sort of book even smelled a bit musty) that had the newbie boss character getting harassed by the old crowd and being told (I think? Or maybe realizing?) that it was a sign of respect and inclusion, and that the real cause for worry would have been if he was treated with (superficial) respect like…

If they can't claim ownership over the idea of affection between men, they lose something that they can no longer grab onto and show off as "see this? This is us.". If you decide to build your identity on being different (on the outside), then it kinda hurts when what you're doing isn't different any more. Obviously this is distinct from "happens to have such-and-such sexual preferences".

I mostly think the government meddles in too damn much. Which apparently used to be left-wing, and has somehow become right-wing. Competitive markets do a pretty good job of providing for most things other than a competitive market. Markets are extremely powerful; try to harness them instead of working against them. "Too much" vs "too little" regulation is a wrong question. It's not the amount that matters, it's the details of how it works. ("It's not size that matters, it's what you do with…

I see people claim that, yes. Since I also see those same people insisting that all sex differences are the result of socialization (and generally using that as their "proof" for the specific case of CS), I don't really take them seriously. (There's also the minor issue that CS and Engineering sex ratios are more even in less free / less rich countries.)

TLDR: it's a very young field, and the nature of the work has been changing. Here's the first chart I found showing historical sex ratios for assorted college majors. CS is at about the same ratio in 2011 as it was in 1971. Which surprises me a bit, since I'd gotten the idea that it'd always used to be higher. It peaked at... around 35% female in the early 80s, and by the end of the chart is tracking very close to where Engineering rose to (around 15%). One thing that suggests, is that CS re…

One thing I see called "toxic" is competitiveness. The thing is, in reasonable amounts? It's actually useful to society. That's because the people who designed the AI were fucking incompetent. They had it look for something like "how similar are you to who we've already hired". Nothing is absolute. Girls may be slightly more prone to irrational things like religion, but that does not means that all of them are or that no men are. All differences like that are only general tendencies. They can tell you what to expect in general, but don't tell you anything at all about any individual. These things are a starting point for interacting with a girl you don't know. Once you've talked a bit, you'll be able to build a better idea of how to work that particular girl. All that …

Maybe try arguing on practicality? If self-estimates of attractiveness follow the same rule as self-estimates of skill, then the Dunning-Krueger paper says everyone thinks they're between 50% (the people actually around 0%) and 75% (the people actually around 100%). Checking qualifications would be the very simplest thing any code could do. There are two problems with this. One, is that the qualified / unqualified distinction probably isn't based on actual formal qualifications (degrees, certifications, whatever). In computer tech, being "qualified" for some position is usually based more on demonstrated ability, which has to be assessed by whoever's doing the hiring. So someone who took a summer job doing tech support, and gradually worked their way into a…

Investigate every accusation as if it were true, that's for the police. The Damore one in particular, I followed fairly closely and know I oversimplified a bit. What I left out was how absolutely appallingly badly his attackers misrepresented what he actually wrote, and how they misrepresented the state of what's scientifically known. Type 1 is the least severe type of FGM. I thought the least severe was most of what's in Type IV "not otherwise classified". Which includes things that sound like they're about the same level as getting your ears pierced. Type 3, for example, [snip details] is really horrific and to compare that with circumcision is a joke. Yep. And to call it by the same name as Type I or most of Type IV is equally a joke. Circumcision doesn't remove a male's ability to enjoy sex And guess what? Several things …

Fgm usually does involve the removal of the clitoris though, at least in the countries where it's practiced routinely. Do you have a source for this? It looks like the official classification scheme doesn't distinguish between "equivalent to circumcision" and "equivalent to a complete dickectomy". Per http://www.path.org/files/FGM-The-Facts.htm : In 1995, the World Health Organization (WHO) developed four broad categories for FGM operations.15 Type 1 Excision (removal) of the clitoral hood with …

High status is whatever everyone else says it is. It's being seen as more equal than other people. What kinds of social circles are high status in the adult world and which ones are low status (LARPers and video game nerds). That depends on where you live and who you care about. High status at a cowboy bar in Texas is going to be fairly different from high status on a cruise put together by a museum, and they'll both be different from high status living near a big surfing beach.

Say a woman mounts a man and he later decides he doesn't want to have sex anymore and he tells her to stop. How long does she have to dismount before she's guilty of rape? I thought most legal definitions of rape are broken in that they specifically don't include "made to penetrate" or whatever you'd call it? So your example can't possibly be rape, unless she's got a strap-on or something.

The whole ci/co is bullshit. Sure, whatever helps you sleep at night. But really? It's the foundation everything else has to build on. It's why studies of "why aren't these people fat" start with measuring their metabolism. If you change your lifestyle then maybe you prevent or slow down further weight gain (or possibly slowly get back to healthy level), but rapid weight loss is simply not part of how we function ever, so the body will do everything it can to stop that. It's just not part of our…

Calories in / calories out / exertion Manage those three variables and you control your physique. The trick is figuring out how to do that reliably. Most modern food is designed to be tasty enough that you'll eat because it tastes good rather than because you're hungry. Most modern food also isn't all that filling, so you'll get hungry again sooner that you ought. Which means that you'll have to fight against your body to actually reduce calories in. Which doesn't work well long term. Or instead…

superior civilization based on exactly what the cited social media post refers to: patriarchal, agricultural-then-industrial society. There were some pretty big nations, some of which were agricultural societies. An industrial society requires a fuck-ton of resources, and also a fuck-ton of knowledge. If you go 110% into all the teachings, sure. But, most of those seem to be heavily oversimplified and stylized teachings meant for the relatively clueless. I don't think it's subjective. Coercion is being forced to do something you don't want to do. In the example earlier, "sometimes you lead, sometimes you follow. I am best at this so I will lead now. He is best at that, he'll lead now. Oh good, we are done now." during the "he'll lead now", who is being coerced? Is it the person who voluntarily chose to follow? Is it the person who is being asked to lead?

Single moms are plate only material. Sure, but why? The reasons seem to be mostly (1) kids that aren't yours are dangerous to live with; (2) her priority is her kids rather than you; and (3) being a single parent implies a history of bad decisions. But, (1) doesn't apply if he's not looking to cohabitate; (2) sounds like something he agrees with; and (3) seems a bit questionable to me, more of a yellow flag than a red flag.

I've been better off avoiding certain situations even if I "feel" like I want to get involved. Discipline is something I am still working on. Given that, I'd say the things you noted (stick around longer, like quality time, you can relate to them better) sound like BIG RED FLAGS for you. Any imbalance is only unjust if some positive right or regulatory action is being asserted which robs one or both of the parties of the liberty to freely choose their actions. If a society is divided into identifiable groups and it looks too much like some groups are keeping others down, then there will be intergroup resentment and eventually violence. Which is a problem, whether or not anyone has individually done anything "wrong". Unjust imbalances of power and the abuse of them can only exist…

groups each seeking their own positive rights, which when granted do nothing but erode our negative human rights. Any interaction has an uneven balance of power. If that balance is too uneven, it can be a rights issue. So you get things like employee protection laws, tenant protection laws, protester protection laws, etc. If that imbalance lines up well enough with some identity group -- men, women, blacks, immigrants, seniors, whatever -- then yes it does become a rights issue for that group.

FGM is a really severe form of mutilation. There's a pretty big range of things that get called FGM. It ranges from "chop everything off" to "far less mutilatory than circumcision". What I've seen is that the most extreme examples are held up as what's being argued against, and the least extreme examples are held up to show how widespread and urgent the problem is.
