I enjoyed the example where a neural network was given post-employment performance metrics and the associated employee resumes as training data and the recommendation it came back with to improve productivity at hiring was to reject almost all identifiably female applicants.

It doesn't know that the underperforming employees were women. It doesn't know that the similarities it found in the resumes of underperforming employees were gender related. It just recognized a pattern and made the best recommendations based on that pattern.

AIs are great for doing that "at least it started a conversation" thing, because they don't know about our unconscious biases or ideas of propriety and social acceptability when it comes to solutions.

They are going to pretend that South Asian and East Asian people don’t exist to make their claim uncomfortable?

White guys are a problem because they are too numerous in a country where whites make up 75% of the population? But an over-abundance of asians in tech aren’t a problem or a confirmation that the tech industry isn’t as bias as they’d like to pretend?

They can’t even take a pure white man photo for their supposed anti-racism article for fuck sake - I count at least three South Asians! We’re just expected to pretend they aren’t in the photo?

You want to talk about racial discrimination let’s talk about journalism’s erasure of Asian men in US tech?

The AI program did what all AI programs do, it identified patterns in a dataset. Just because the pattern is inconvenient doesn't indicate bias.

It's impossible to act for the benefit of people who don't look like you. Things like "empathy" and "market research" are pipe dreams.

Also modern computer tech has a uniquely discriminatory culture, far worse than all the professions that women fought to get into when they first joined the formal labor force.
