I wish we had more Family Law updates like this. These days I just see a lot of "some woman somewhere did something bad" posts and these are not very constructive to actual legal "rights" discussions.

Because in the ancestral environment, she needs a minimum of 5 years of his time: 9 months gestation + 4 years of protection/provisioning while she is straddled with keeping their offspring alive. In comparison, he only needs about 5 minutes of her time.

For people who've been putting the opposite gender on a pedestal their whole lives, MGTOW is like a decontamination chamber. Many men need to go through it once so they can learn to put themselves first.

Any other fellow liberals noticing how our nations' callousness to men's issues is slowly turning us into right-wingers? Sad!

Where are Karen Straughan, Sargon of Akkad, and other vloggers? They need to interview this man.

OP this is big news. We should perhaps repost in a few hours with more normie-friendly title. Many of us aren't familiar with organizations like FIRE but we sure are familiar with the structural injustices facing young men in college today, guilty until proven innocent, kangoroo courts, etc.

Agreed. I've seen this happen to other one time MRM-allies over the years. In order to grow their Youtube/website business they move onto more shock value topics and bigger audiences. Apparently standing up for men's gender equality doesn't pay/play as well as hating on brown people.

Yep. The GF realized he wouldn't make a good mark for her dowry/alimony schemes.

In this case that money isn't "support for kids". It's vaginamony.

Welcome to the Fundamental Premise: Eggs are expensive, Sperm is cheap, and everything from our instincts, to culture, to laws derive from that consciously or unconsciously.

Yeah but not when it comes to custody and alimony, amirite NOW?

She should file next year after his term limit is reached, so the court can high-water-mark his Governor salary as the basis for alimony calculation even though he is no longer Governor. You know, the usual usual for regular guys in court.

Less child support $'s since they will be taking care of the child only half the time compared to a full custody situation. The other part of the bill is going to cap alimony durations and allow the payor (usually the male) to apply for end of payments when they reach legal retirement age. Basically it comes down to $$$.
/r/MensRights08/04/16 06:51 PM

What ought to be there is the ruling should start from the presumption of equal custody, and evidence should be used to determine if a parent deserves less. Yes, which is what this bill is.

But will the legal and social system change to push this sexual strategy on men? It already does with Marriage 2.0 divorce-rape rules. You can cuckold your spouse, get caught, and still be awarded permanent alimony. I don't know how much more the laws can change to enable BB/AF.

I also agree with the Bar on their objection to the 20+ year clause. It actually makes things worse for the breadwinner. There is a big difference between alimony in the amount of 1/3 of the difference of two incomes, and "equalization". That means if your ex is a stay at home, you are paying 50% of your income in alimony alone. I can't believe the reformers got so sloppy.

To be honest the best state is one where you never say "I do". The biggest mistake divorced guys make is to go down the dating --> serious relationship --> marriage path. Happens all the time. Changing states does not solve this fundamental problem. Fast forward 7 years you will be stuck in another marriage wondering where the hell you went wrong. MGTOW is a discipline and state of mind. Any state that you enjoy for its people, climate, and other factors will do. I like what you're thinking with…

India's MRM is doing some fantastic things. Also they are focusing on true men's issues like Divorce Law, instead of being drawn into feminists' own topics like the pay-gap, 1-in-4 college rapes, etc. I think we can use some focus in the West too.

Sorry man, that was the case in the pre-no-fault era. Under current no-fault divorce rules in most jurisdictions adultery has no effect on outcomes unless it can be proven that said act(s) physicaly endangered the kids. There was the not so recent case of a US mom who used to leave her baby strapped to the child seat in her car in the motel parking lot while she was inside the motel doing the horizontal tango with her lover. Frankly I think we should focus in things like family law where the average guy is most likely to suffer life ruining consequences, than be drawn into sensationalist topics like college rape. How many of us actually in the movement are going back to college someday? How many of us have been, are, or will be married someday? I bet the ratio is like 1 to 100.

This guy's comment is the first one that came up for me in the comments section. Mrs. Sullivan is being bullied by the oxymoronic "men's rights" activists. The Times reported accurately on a sexist movement to demean a powerful woman — if anything they shied away from accurately addressing the misogyny inherent in Reddit's core demographic (disaffected white makes). The "men's rights" activists (the term itself is a misnomer) are out in full force. Ms. Pao has been subject to relentless, viciously sexist attacks that have nothing to do with her real capabilities. This is about gender, and pretending it has anything to do with "merit" is just the Silicon Valley way of powerful men dismissing women in leadership roles as uppity. All I can say to my fellow men is: shame on you. What a cuck.

The strongest weapon that MRA has is the decline in marriage rates. It is the only thing that will bring female votIng block to the negotiating table. Crazily enough the real work here is being done by PUAs and TRPers.

Declining marriage rates is the only real weapon that MRA has to meet their objectives - legal reform.

What's truly scary to me is the number of MRA's and even a few TRP'ers saying "alimony isn't all that bad, just needs some tweaking". As the recent toothless "reform" in Massachusetts showed us that as long as it exists in the books, no matter how gender-neutral it is worded, alimony will be used by the guy in black robes (or in powdered wigs if you live in CA/UK) to stick it to the husband in the divorce.

Yes but alimony laws are neither written nor implemented this way. They never factor in whether there are any children to begin with, any work at home contributions, or any anything else. Its mostly the "accustomed" standard, and at best in a few states a formula by # of years of marriage.

No 10 year cap in Mass. (Some Southern states like TX have those). The Mass Alimony Reform bill has a sliding scale and allows for alimony anywhere from 1 to 20 years, and permanent alimony is still available if the Judge decides the situation warrants it. Here is the language: http://www.massalimonyreform.org/legislation.html Very recently the Mass SJC made things worse for men by finding a way around the "shall end at retirement" language https://nationalparentsorganization.org/recent-articles…

I agree. POTUS has near zero authority on Family Law and most other gender issues anyway. It is almost always decoded by State Legislatures, and in some cases like Title IX and VAWA by Federal legislature (I.e. Congress). Sure they give the occasional 77-cents speech, but I think any policy impact is minimal. So I agree that any mileage gained for going after Hillary would be minimal at best, and very likely detrimental by signal boosting anti-MRA rhetoric. Let the TradCons do it.

This MGTOW article describes what "Patriarchy" really is at its root. It was a social contract that is now broken. http://no-maam.blogspot.com/2008/02/questionators-should-women-have-right.html?m=1

Check out the National Organization of Women, the biggest feminist group on the planet, fighting against alimony reform tooth and nail in Florida: http://reason.com/blog/2015/03/16/lifelong-alimony-may-end-in-florida Yep equality my ass.

And insist she will. It is the inevitable result of game theory. The advantages that come with a marriage contract are simply too great to pass, and any rational female will pursue it.

Folks remember this the next time someone tells you there is no need for a MRM because Feminism is working on men's issues too.

Yep. The only thing "long term" about Marriage 2.0 is the Alimony.

Imagine the alternate universe where he never got married, never divorced, and never lost his ranch. The 1979 divorce means he was one of the first casualties of "no-fault". Men: Avoid Marriage at all costs.

Now that the AF has done his job he is off the hook. It's time for BB to "man up", to step up to the plate, and to dutifully raise the child as if it were his. Just the natural primate mating cycle. Nothing to see here, move on. /s Nature is red in tooth and claw. It was only in the last few 10K years that humanity rose above this monkey business via social customs, religion, and laws to build civilization. If you roll it all back calling it "the Patriarchy" things will go back to monkey busines…

EDIT: I meant the women doing the testimony and joining the reform movement in my sentence below, not women and divorces in general. --------> To be fair these are mostly women who themselves are ensnared by the current messed up laws, but in all fairness most men don't discover the MRM either until they too are wronged by the system.

Alimony will never be abolished or even reformed unless the pain of its absurdity is also felt by working women. The OP's brother has a duty at this point to go for as much alimony as possible. The more and absurd the amount the better.

Define "men's rights". The concept, the idea? Or is there some umbrella organization that we don't know about. If you mean specific single issue advocacy groups there are some very good ones out there: https://nationalparentsorganization.org/about-npo/achievements

And let's be clear: Florida lawmakers are in no way trying to abolish alimony payments. You know they should abolish Alimony altogether. Abe Lincoln didn't "reform" or "bring predictability" to Slavery now did he?

Since this is out of character compared to his previous work I am going cut Maher some slack and put forward the following theory. The Democratic primaries are approaching fast and the big media bosses that control MSM shows like his want to mobilize the "War on Women" faithful in time to make sure that Hillary becomes the nominee.

This is better than nothing. However there are loopholes that I am sure many recipients will exploit: --For marriages that lasted fewer than 20 years, the length of alimony payments cannot exceed the length of the marriage unless a judge decides there are “exceptional circumstances”

A few giddy commenters, especially Diane in CA, over at NYT have caught on that this amounts to alimony during the course of the marriage, which will be very handy for calculating alimony after the marriage as well. Diane correctly adds that this will be an awesome boon to the family law industry.

Even child support is cut off permanently once a child reaches adulthood. According to current alimony laws, which NOW loves by the way, a woman never reaches full adulthood.

BTW Massachusetts had a similarly diluted reform pass in 2011. The only net impact was it shielded the income of the 2nd wife, when recalculating the alimony to the 1st wife. Did nothing for the men for the most part.

It's better than nothing but it falls far short of the original bill as even the head of NJ Alimony Reform organization admits in the Op Ed. http://www.nj.com/opinion/index.ssf/2014/08/opinion_nj_alimony_reform_bill_is_a_first_step_not_an_endpoint.html It uses "may" instead of "shall" for alimony ending at the age of retirement, at the Judge's discretion to consider other factors such as the health of the payee. How many 65 year olds do you know who don't have any ailments whatsoever?

I like the one commenter who said yes Alimony doesn't need reform, it needs abolishing. After all can you imagine if Lincoln merely "reformed" slavery?
