I found out later that this guy had a girlfriend, and they were poly. Such a bullet dodged. I wasnt really a fan of his girlfriend and the thought of sharing someone with her was absolutely disgusting to me. I dont think someone is necessarily obligated to divulge that they're in an open relationship before asking someone out- I do think that should be conveyed on the first date - but I have zero interest in any guy who already has a woman in his life.

Omg!! I had a guy who I knew IRL who asked me out. I said sure, lets do lunch. I'm free on <this day>. He never texted me to set anything up! It happened one more time, I was so confused by the whole thing. Like what was his endgame? Was he expecting me to start chasing him? The whole thing was so confusing.

The groups I took part in had a rule that women had women -only sponsors. I didnt end up participating for long, but I thought that was really important. Men will absolutely take advantage of any sort of vulnerability to get laid. There are women-only groups for exactly this reason. It's terrible because hypersexuality is often comorbid with addiction issues in women. Men will gleefully take advantage of that.

I wish I hadn't so fully bought the "casual sex is empowering" lie. It never really was. I figured that out early, but still, wish it had been even earlier. I wish someone had told me to just not date above 25 until I was also that age. Trust me... as an 18 yr old you'd ideally stay in the 18-22 bracket. Also I would reiterate how important protection is. I've read that kids these days (ha, sorry, couldn't help myself) dont use protection as much as previous generations... this is a bad, bad MO …

I remember those conversations 🙄 yep, you dont owe anyone your time and energy. My go-to response (if I even felt like responding) would be to ask them why they felt that way, or when they had reached their conclusions, and what made them reach their conclusions. Basically I would pivot my role from defender of whatever position, to sociological researcher of their particular viewpoint. I can think they're completely wrong, but just not engage and instead find out why they think that way. Also y…

Agreed - but I have to say, if the discussion is happening in a public forum and its happening because all people are impacted by the outcome, I dont think it's fair for someone to try to "shut down" the conversation by using their personal trauma as a reason. I completely agree with this if it's the scenario of someone "playing devil's advocate" in a private convo, just because they are bored or because they see it as a mental exercise.

It's a phenomenon I've seen talked about before, that any app that's designed to be just for hookups will eventually move to being a space for people who want relationships, if straight women are using them. Like when tinder started, it was billed as "grindr for straight people". But now anyone who treats it that way gets labeled an asshole. I've never used OLD because I think most men have this subconscious view of the women on those apps as cakes on a rotating tray, regardless of the platform …

I've always had an aversion to military men. I think they are too macho for me. They always seem to assume they will be the one in charge, and that drives me absolutely crazy. They also seem really bossy all the time. No thanks... I don't owe you shit for your "service". Never understood why some women seem to get into the whole men in uniforms thing.

Hahahaha, it's true. It's also why having gay spaces is important, and why having gay events are important. It's hard enough getting up the courage to hit on a woman... it feels even harder to do that, knowing that most people aren't even gay to begin with.

I'm with you on that fight. I think that women are made afraid to say what they believe in, because it's so often completely unpopular. We're made to feel small for advocating for what is our own benefit. The idea that truly "feminine" women will have everything they need given to them is an idea that keeps women disempowered. How do we do meaningful activism? I often think the ones who need attention and support are younger girls, who are so bombarded by these terrible new norms.

If being a sex worker is a job like any other, does that mean you could be denied welfare benefits for not accepting work that you could be doing? This happened in Germany, to a woman who was offered work as a "waitress" at a brothel. Because she turned down the job, her benefits were denied. Sex work being mainstreamed isn't harmless.

I dont think so. I think you can build a system of ethics that does not rely on an explicit god. I do think that religion is one of the more effective ways for people to transmit moral values.
/r/FemaleDatingStrategy29/08/20 06:05 AM

There is no outlet for women who want to demand better treatment from men, without also being religious/conservative. It's like liberal/mainstream culture decided that having access to women was a right - max pleasure for men with minimal investment. Challenge that and people make all sorts of assumptions about other values.

AGREED! Any woman who tries to point it out gets painted as an evil jealous bitter old woman. I have really noticed how women are taught not to trust each others motives and not having mentor figures in my life as a younger woman was really rough. I actually think about it all the time, wondering how I can be there for young women now in a way that they appreciate.

Most of the time they are young women who are going through their "make mistakes" phase and the relationship lasts as long as it takes for her to realize her mistake. Then the guy tries to move on to the next one.

Honestly men just hate that women have standards and preferences just like they do. Men are the same way about women - they love to go on and on about how much they'd love to have sex with anyone, but if a woman who they thought was ugly tried it out they'd turn her down too. Many men (especially childish ones) feel betrayed if women offer them conditional love because they subconsciously believe they should love them unconditionally (like their moms do). And standards and preferences are condit…

Because for younger women, they want to explore their sexuality and want to do so "consequence free". They see any consequence of sex as oppressive, perhaps because they instinctually fear motherhood because our culture often demands the death of the personhood of a woman who has a child. However, I think this also extends to relationships where someone might be expected to be emotionally invested and make sacrifices for their partners. In other words, women want to see what all the fuss is abou…

It really helped me to make distinctions about quitting things that I had been very invested in wanting to do for a long time, vs quitting doing things that happened to me through circumstance. There are a lot of things I kept doing out of a sense of duty or routine, that weren't very meaningful to me or furthering bigger goals. There's nothing wrong with cutting away things that drain your energy!

I've dealt with this; because I had a lot of shame over bad decisions I'd made in the past. You have to do an inventory and see what behaviors you're still doing that are leftover from that mindset. You also have a to embrace that you made mistakes in the past. Your strength in your new convictions will be stronger, the more you can chart the evolution of your attitudes and ideals. Your experiences are what provide you with the conviction that you are now making better decisions for yourself. …

Alcohol and relationships with LVM seem to go hand in hand SO true!!! I've drawn the connection between respecting my body through not drinking to respecting my body through not "hooking up", it is incredibly linked for me. I had such a problem. I dont date multiple people at once. It makes me anxious. Like I am hiding something. To be fair, I havent been dating in a while. It makes me feel very slimy - especially if me and the person are beginning to develop attachment. And if there is any sort of physical intimacy, it makes me feel even grosser. It's because of porn. Kids discover sex through porn - and so much of it features aggro men/crying and submissive women. Even myself, I discovered a lot of sex through porn. Written erotica, but still. It has a huge impact on what you think is "normal".

I'm honestly happy to see the tide turning in porn and abusive kink. How weird, that the most common kink is all about reinforcing sexual submission! How ODD. People acting like kinks aren't an expression of how they really want to act, aren't being honest with themselves.

I remember that episode specifically because I remember it working on me! I grew up in a household where my mother denied the existence of sex and sexuality, so any education or advice on the topic, I got from media. I ended up going to my senior prom with a "nice guy" who I wasn't interested in at all, and I remember thinking about that episode when I was considering whether to go with him or turn him down. I see now why war of the sexes is a thing, because truthfully men try to bargain as a class for sex and our emotional labor, and it's up to us to demand they meet better standards. I think that if birth control were no longer available, all the women in America would wake up to how misogynistic men actually are. Everyone thinks feminism won and everyone's equal. If I have a friend in a shitty situation, I don't tell them what they should do outright. I just point out that they have had a pattern of venting to me about the same things. I try to ask them questions that get them to admit to themselves why they are upset. I think online dating creates a problem for women who participate, where they are opened to far more potential suitors than they have the energy or effort to sort through. This creates burnout. It would be interesting if people could create some House Party-like app that would put people in smaller groups to begin with, so that they don't feel like they are overloaded with male attention at the start.

Men see young women as a resource. They get angry when denied access to a resource they think they should be entitled to. They think that the only blocks to the resource are their own money level, looks, influence, etc - so if they feel like they have what it takes, they get enraged to think that the woman would be the one to turn them down.

I think this comparison is a big reason why SOME people do it, they loooooove thinking that their sex is so much sexier than the boring straights.

This seems like a miscommunication, and maybe he was nervous and didn't want to feel like he was bugging you. No one ever taught me that when you make plans with people, it's customary to confirm with them that it's still happening once the time gets closer. When I was younger, I thought, well, we made plans for a time and place, so why would we need to confirm?!? I had a couple embarrassing experiences in college where I realized that other people are busy, and may fully want to meet up but for…

Oh, ok. I didn't mean that in a way that was blaming the victim at all. Often people are completely blind to their habits and patterns, because they do them every day. What happens is, people seek the familiar. What is a warning sign to someone who knows better, is invisible to someone who is used to being treated a certain way. If not careful, they could begin to subconsciously LOOK for people who treat them that way, because it is familiar and therefore feels "right".

The benefits that come from relationships don't really come from the sex part, though. They come from having someone in your life who cares about you. You can't really buy that with prostitution. I think that womens' dating filters exist to ensure their own safety and dignity throughout their life, and that any man who doesn't make it through might not be as much of a catch as he thinks. Being ugly is NOT the dealbreaker some men think it is. If you aren't strong in one area, make up for it in a…

"Anime" just means animated art from Japan. Saying it is all bad is as ignorant as saying every movie that has been made in America is bad. There are overarching problems but it's not all fan service. Are there genres that are not feminist? Totally. But it is not part of the definition of anime, just examples of bad anime. There are even animes that are 100% aimed at female viewership (like ouran high school host club) that are far more unapologetically female-intended than media I've seen from …

You dont have to be loud to be assertive. Think of all the teachers you had as a kid, who could shut everyone down with one little word. The important part is to show that you are not being pushed into things by others. When you give your responses, be deliberate and speak with confidence. Look them in the eye. Little things like that really make a big difference in others' perceptions.

This, all of this. Women are more at risk of contracting STDs than men. It is a function of the way our genitals are shaped. Likewise, we of course have pregnancy to worry about. I contracted genital herpes after sleeping around in my early twenties. Every day, I wish I didnt have it. I thought I was invincible - same with sexual assault. One good way of shutting him down that helps send the signal early is to refuse to discuss your personal life with him. Young women are seen as giving meaning to an otherwise meaningless world. This is reflected in ad nauseam in art, where commonly the only focal point of a piece is a young and beautiful woman. (this is especially true of bad artists, who will simply throw a naked woman on their piece and call it a day) This is not based on any facet of the young woman's personality or inner strengths, merely her bodied existence as a female and youthful person. This young woman archetype is used as a shorthand f…

You can't switch mentors? Is this a feature of your program, or is he the only one available? This situation sucks for you. Does he have other students that he mentors, or is it just you? If he is putting you on the defensive, to where you can't actually talk to him as a mentor, then he isn't doing his job. His role as a mentor is for YOU, his only purpose as a figure in your life is to help guide you. It sounds like that situation is not currently possible and he is just becoming a liability.

I have hit this dynamic before, although in an academic setting. Is he assigned to be your mentor? Or is it an informal arrangement? One thing that I despise is that as a young woman, ANY interaction becomes open to sexual interpretation, especially by the mans wife or girlfriend. I think this is a really common issue that I haven't heard discussed much (probably because it's a bit taboo to admit that other women might be causing problems)

I think that back in the day, stakes were far higher. Getting impregnated by a man who would desert you was life-ending. The stigma against unwed mothers was such that most of the time, those babies were quietly adopted away (as recently as the 50s). Because women absolutely HAD to have a man to have some semblance of a life, weeding out men who were only in it for sex was much more rigorous, and women were thought worse than foolish if they didn't. I hear you, and agree that women have always borne the brunt of greedy execs trying to pander to low-brow fantasies.

Cant stand men like that. I'll never forget when I was 23 and naive, and actually believed a guy that he just wanted to go back to his place and hang out a little longer. After turning him down bluntly for sex/fooling around 5+ times, I FINALLY got it through my head that he wanted to bang and nothing else... had to call myself an uber and everything. How do guys not realize that masking their intentions like this is LYING and breaking our trust? (I never saw this person again)

I like it. I think it's more about obsession and the dangers of being transparent online. If you think it's a good example to live up to, you're just stupid... and I dont think artists should make their art with the stupid people in mind.

Not the person you are responding to... but the logic is that historically very few men had resources and very few men were allowed to mate. The idea that each man is destined or even deserving of reproducing is not a given.

I agree, but the type of guy who posts stuff like this is almost always a smug fuckboy who is pretending they aren't 🙄

I think it just means that you probably communicated in a way to them where they knew there was no possible way you would go back. That, and maybe you are not dating as actively?

Sure! There are many people (mostly men) who think it is especially demeaning for men or boys to be beaten by a woman at something. This could be something competitive, or it could be more general, such as knowing how to do something. A very large part of the masculine sense of self is wrapped up in being the competent, knowledgeable, strong one. This is what is meant by "the fragile masculine ego". The sense of self that is so completely tied up in being The Best or The Strongest that any hint …

To them, humiliating women is a homosocial bonding activity. It has less to do with the woman in question and more to do with them asserting their dominance of a space and trying to impress other men.

The only time I ever attempted any form of non-monogamy (it was my idea both times, because I was trying to avert a well-deserved crash in the relationship and I was very young), I was miserable. It took only 2 times for me to realize that I want and need a monogamous relationship, and that anything other than that will hurt. I know so many poly people who think they are more evolved because they are poly. It's hilariously sad. They are also the sort of people who think that because they are now…

Because I was made to feel that being high achieving was unwomanly, so I felt like I had to overcompensate. Women aren't "supposed to" win. We are supposed to watch men win and be their adoring audience.

I truly blame porn. Almost all hetero porn does not use a condom.

Chickenpox isn't the same strain of herpes that simplex 1 and 2 are. I see that you have it and feel like a sexual pariah. I do too, and I'm struggling with the same feelings. Perhaps not because it's wrong... it makes me feel like I am a less valuable partner now. Tbf I haven't been trying to date.

BLOCK HIM!! IMMEDIATELY! If you can't commit to even that, how are you ever going to get over him? Rip off the bandaid, sister. Block! The way he treated you, you will not be able to get back with him or even talk with him until he apologizes. Not while maintaining your self-respect. If you can't even respect yourself, how can you ever expect him to? You need to take that part of your pride that is hurting and use that as fuel you get yourself stronger. Take it as inspiration for becoming more l…

Maybe she didn't want to get pregnant at that time in her life? Just saying, having a rich boyfriend and a life that's a constant party doesn't sound too bad. Maybe she's getting exactly what she wants when she wants it.
