The feminist group called LilithS — formerly the Belgian branch of FEMEN — interrupted Michel in a press conference where he was presenting an economic program to prominent Walloon business leaders. http://www.vocativ.com/culture/fun/prime-minister-belgium-attacked-fries-mayonnaise/ Apparently they are feminists. Here's their facebook page.

I think you're being far too cynical in assuming laws can only ever made to hurt men and advance women. Why not point out the negative consequences of this type of legislation for both men and women and oppose it on those grounds? Supporting this type of legislation in the hopes of confusing feminists into self reflection is a bizarre round about way of getting your point across.

The issue I have with this is that insisting on the offensiveness of a term without any kind of explanation nowadays typically leads to a hysterical shutdown of the discussion by the accuser, who leaves with a false sense of "winning the argument". It's not convincing or progressive. Also, it's hypocritical to demand certain terms like "woman" are loosened up to include transwomen, while simultaneously demanding that other terms like "tranny" must be treated as having a fixed meaning. You can't …

Why is "tranny" even considered offensive? Is it just for the sake of being able to correct others in their language? I mean, its just a diminutive form of "transgender" and doesn't imply any kind of derogatory meaning. It's a really common way of shortening longer words in order to speak more efficiently. I'm Australian and I don't see any offence in getting called "Aussie".

Anyway, it said that humans as a while are darwinisming ourselves into idiocracy because people of lower intelligence do not take the correct steps to use birth control and end up having children, while smarter people take the correct steps unless they intentionally want children. Actually IQ tests are recalibrated every so often, and the standard for average intelligence has been constantly increasing. Humanity is getting smarter.

Software piracy is far more widespread outside the west. Other governments do not care to enforce software copyright on Western software nearly as much because it is foreign companies' profits that are affected. As for the comparison between feminism and /r/funny, there's probably a similar level of critical thinking between the two, but you'd be hard pressed to stretch the analogy beyond that.

I wish I could articulate my thought correctly, but it's almost like women want you (as a man, or a creature of society in general) to be obligated to find them competent in whatever "field" they choose to participate. More or less they want rules to accommodate them, rather than earning their way. "I am funny because women can be funny. I am a woman, so I am funny." This comes about from the appeal of traditional gender roles. Women are viewed as non-agents and men are agents, so men must give …

I understand your point, and there are feminists who maintain the view that men hold most of the power, despite acknowledging a few exceptions, which are seen as not in contradiction to the overall analysis. However, this is perspective is fundamentally flawed because the distribution and nature of that power is grossly misunderstood. Firstly, "male power" is not a brotherhood of equality due to how we view agency. Men are traditionally charged with taking responsibility and acting in society, a…

Just to clarify that modern-day feminism is not compatible with egalitarianism. Second wave feminism definitely was. And all the young kids who claim they're feminists without being aware of the direction the movement is headed, in general, are usually more similar to second wave feminists than the third wave we see today. I think the compatibility of feminism with the MRM until the third wave gets a bit overstated. To provide a some examples... British suffragettes of the "first wave" were also…

Feminism and the MRM cannot be combined because of the centrality of patriarchy theory to feminism. When you approach gender relations with the starting point that women have always been oppressed and men have always been the oppressors, it is impossible to even acknowledge that men might face gender based disadvantages, and that women might enjoy gender based advantages. The MRM is compatible with egalitarianism, but feminism is not. At least, not without an overhaul of its central theory... bu…

Go read about August Comte, who founded sociology and the doctrine of positivism in the 19th century. As an alternative explanation, I think the two terms are often used interchangibly but they are also used with a slight difference of meaning in mind. This is my opinion on how the terms are used in politics, and not specifically in relation to feminism. A person holding a "radical" ideology is critical of a problem they perceive to be at the root of society: some deeper structure that isn't obvious at the surface level. Some people are happy to consider themselves radical, and will use that lab…

This question interests me a lot (although it could be phrased more tactfully) because I'm not Canadian but I live in Canada now. I think the answer lies somewhere in the combination of an inheritance of the British "stiff upper lip" mentality, having to deal with the characteristically French demands and protests of the Quebecois, and desiring to implicitly present Canadian identity as better than America. The effect is that Canadians want to show they're more accommodating and virtuous than ev…

Survival was the driving force behind traditional gender roles, not a conspiracy to oppress women. Traditional gender roles developed organically in the pre-modern era where we did not enjoy the massive abundance of wealth we have now. Men performed the majority of physical labor because of their relatively higher physical strength, while women's roles centred on bearing and raising children because of the capacity to give birth when infant mortality rates were very high by today's standards. Pe…

Great job but... artifacts appear through repeated saving and resaving: Most mid- to low-range digital cameras save images to the storage card in JPEG format. This is a compressed file format that permanently, irreversibly loses quality each time the image is saved--that's why it is often called a "lossy" format. http://graphicssoft.about.com/cs/digitalimaging/qt/overcompression.htm

My argument is that mra's talk about this stuff all the time, but have little to no idea what its actually about and fill in the gaps with absurd sounding theories. I'd also argue that objecting to cops or anyone saying “women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized” is just as valid as mra's objecting to the police saying men can avoid being victimized by their wives by not being idiots in response to questions about womens DV against men. There is also "agency theory" dogma. The reasoning behind "don't blame the victim" is a trauma therapy model, the military use it, its used for men, and female rape victims. The person with PTSD presents with irrational feelings of responsibility, self blame and shame for what happened to them, which are brought to normal levels in order for the person to move out of their ptsd and regain agency, hence "dont blame the victim". Why do you assume it is valid to use (and compel everyone into using)…

Not it's not. It is idiotic to try to out-bullshit feminists on seeing how far into all-encompassing absurdity we can push definitions of rape and sexual assault. Nope. We were debating meaning of "culture" used in "rape culture" as applied to broader society. I'm pretty sure the studies into of rape culture in particular war zones and prisons did not draw macro conclusions about broader society, as they are specifically focused within a micro frame of reference. Or do you believe recent feminist protests against "rape culture" such as pushes to ban Blurred Lines at universities, were protests against the rape culture in prisons and wars exclusively, and …

This proves my point as it utterly fails to make a distinction between definitions of culture, as I claimed is the norm amongst feminists. Instead it ultimately defines "rape culture" in terms of classifying "a society" and not merely as an aspect of a society. You claimed this latter definition was only held by "some feminists" who are "hyperbolic internet feminists" but the source you cited just disproved your own point. edit: I see you've added "it was recently changed and is now less clear."

"Culture" is a word with multiple meanings and this greatly contributes to confusion as to what "rape culture" actually means. "Culture" can refer to one specific practise of a group of people, or that group as a whole. For example, you could say sushi is Japanese culture, but you wouldn't say Japan is "a sushi culture": sushi is not the singular factor that defines the entirety of Japanese culture. This is same silly leap that feminists take from saying "this thing is rape culture" to "we live …

There is a tendency among feminists to see male vices as innate, and male virtues as socially conditioned, while female virtues are innate, and female vices as socially conditioned. For example, men are naturally violent, but raised to be ambitious, while women are naturally compassionate, but raised to be gossipy.

You're either with us, or you're with the terrorists FTFY There are plenty of women opposed to feminism, so why do feminists assume that anyone who criticises feminism automatically hates women? This is one of the major issues the article raises: currently the terminology "child sex trafficking" is used to describe both "freelance" child prostitutes and imprisoned child sex slaves. I understand the point you're trying to make, that fiery rhetoric can be taken out of context and should be avoided, but the author here is intentionally connecting MRAs with PUAs and all sorts of other groups where there is no relation other than that have some link to being male. There is no collectively related "manosphere" as she puts it. Plus, the type of comments that y…

Warren Farrell, the aforementioned “father” of the modern MRAs—he openly called date rape “exciting” is very different to the "direct quote", which the linked article "put in context" with more and more cherry picking, rather than actually exploring the context: We have forgotten that before we began calling this date rape and date fraud, we called it exciting. Here Farrell is quoting past societal perceptions of dating dynamics, not his personal opinion of date rape.

I've followed both subreddits for a while, and I've noticed the overlap recently and would rather not see the the TiA type content here for a few reasons. First, TiA has a lot parody mixed with serious tone, and I'd much rather see this subreddit kept focused on serious discussion. Secondly, the scope of this subreddit is much more specific, and I'd prefer it that way too. We don't need an MRA slant on trans-ethnic vegan headmates, considering that sort of perspective is such an internet-only ni…

I don't think this image is suggesting girls can't be real gamers. I think its response to a recent wave of feminists criticising gaming as biased towards male gamers. The point being made here is that for most of the history of video games, it was a hobby that was looked down upon as enjoyed only the loser nerd man-child. It's not that women were socially excluded from gaming, but more that women disliked it as much as most men.

I would argue that most participants around the world are not aware of the origins of the Slutwalk, and the original message has either been either hijacked by radfems to protest about what they always protest about, or more commonly, a stupidly broad bastardisation of the original protest presented as demands like "I should be be able to wear anything I want anytime and not get treated any differently to the next person." Good luck with wearing your pyjamas to your sisters wedding.

You're coming off as a very cynical person who lives in constant fear of attack by everyone around you. The vast majority of people in the world are not out to exploit others as much as possible. I'd say overall, based only on the published summaries, there really isn't enough accessible specific data here to argue conclusively for gender based pay discrimination. But that isn't the message pushed by feminist researchers keen to secure grant funding. It certainly is a huge glaring omission to disregard the median work hours of men and women collectively. But if that's where they want to set the goal posts, it's easily dismissed.

Would you rape an inebriated person on the basis that it's their own personal responsibility? Victims of rape, murder and other serious crimes bear no moral or legal responsibility for vicious acts committed against them. While it is reasonable to take precautions against predictable dangers, it is really deplorable to suggest that a person incapacitated by drinking is responsible for what others do to them. I don't know what kind of horrible libertarian world you imagine you live in, but I hope you keep yourself and your personal interpretation of responsibility away from other people.

This is a case of feminists prescribing gender roles for women, that is, women just aren't allowed to want to stay at home full time to care for their children. But some men and women do want to live by traditional gender roles, and I think that's fine if they both agree on it.

Feminism's concept of "The Patriarchy" as a system of oppression of women perpetrated by men. It is wrong and exploitative to deceive another person into providing for you financially just because you don't want the stress of a career and/or desire your own crotch spawn. Further to the solution... Men should have the option of a "financial abortion". The difference between hard and soft sciences isn't in the integrity of the researchers, it's in the nature of the object of research. The "social world" is much more dynamic, with complex multiple causal factors, and much fewer reliably reproducible results. Well, I think we broadly agree, but this is becoming about how to label what you're referring to as 'genetic backgrounds'. How would you label these groupings if you want to avoid the term 'races'? Your (edit: second) last sentence doesn't have the same meaning as your first sentence. The concept of race is still used and useful in medicine. I think that taken out of context it is an interesting observation: women favour women more than men favour men (lol so much for "the patriarchy"). It is my solemn duty to inform you that you've been brainwashed. Feminists influences have been at work to establish indelible associations in your brain between men, sex and violence. Unfortunately, this means you will never have a meaningful relationship with a man due to your own arrogant and prejudiced paranoia. The good news is you're now qualified to live on a bustling separatist feminist commune! Enjoy!

Let me help you with your reading comprehension: It's merely disappointing I know your itching to uncover some innate violent impulse here, but the most malice you're going to find is in your own accusatory voice.

There are women who dress in a slutty manner because they are slutty. I'm totally fine with that - in fact, I wish more women acted in a slutty way. What I'm objecting to is prudes dressing provocatively because it wastes a gentleman's precious time and resources when he's out to get laid.
/r/MensRights10/04/12 02:19 AM
1

False analogy: people don't go to museums to buy art. There are innumerable other examples where people dress in a particular way then get treated accordingly. This is really not a feminist issue in any way - the same rules apply to everyone everywhere.

Because it's stooping to a level where you're trying to entice ideological conformity with the promise of sex appeal. I would hope MR arguments would be convincing on their own merits.

Who said anything about rape? It's merely disappointing when someone is dressed sluttily, but don't act that way. You're making the common feminist mistake of confusing desire for sex with doing anything at any cost to get sex. Sexual desire DOES NOT EQUAL the overwhelming urge to rape someone. Edit: btw, the bomber analogy was a reductio ad absurdum, intended to show a flaw in reasoning, not provide an example of equivalent intensity.

You're right. I should be able to walk down Times Square with a suicide vest strapped to me and people should respect my right to wear whatever I want, regardless of the social connotations attached to my choice of attire. I'm not going to blow anyone up, so how dare they assume that.
/r/MensRights09/04/12 03:50 PM

I support the right of anyone to wear slutty clothes, as long as they back it up with actually being "slutty". And I'm not saying that's a bad thing - just don't stick a "For Sale" sign outside a house you don't want to sell.

/r/MensRights01/04/12 11:15 PM

History doesn't follow the scientific method. With history you can't re-enact an experiment and verify the results. You can't use a control group or try to eliminate variables that interfere with the outcome. History is more about finding a few parts of a puzzle and inferring what the picture is. By the way, what we're talking about now is the philosophy of knowledge - this is the foundation that science is built upon.
/r/MensRights01/04/12 03:39 AM
3

There is no "the answer" to this question. Different political systems work differently at different times in different places. Postmodernism recognises this - the subject matter is affected by so many causal properties and has so many fluctuating characteristics that we can't talk about 'the truth' of social sciences with the same confidence that we speak of 'the truth' of hard sciences.
/r/MensRights31/03/12 05:36 AM
3

Are you equating non-sensical with non-scientific? Because there is a shit tonne load of questions out there that we can't use the scientific method on, but we still crave the answers for. For example, political philosophy - there is no scientifically rigorous experiment we can do that would give us "the answer" to government. This is the situation that topics like "gender" are in. We can't define "man" in the same way we can define "helium". So do we give up and refuse to talk about it because …

The whole way of conceptualising gendered characteristics is a sham set up. According to feminists, men's vices (e.g. aggression) and women's virtues (e.g. compassion) are part of their essences. But, men's virtues (e.g. assertiveness) and women's vices (e.g. bitchiness) can be learned/unlearned.

The feminist argument is that men are naturally violent and aggressive, while women are naturally compassionate and caring. So, women are the innocent victims for all of history, but all of this can be fixed if you just click the like button for that post on facebook.

Do you seriously believe that 99.99% of people reproduce like this? The theory of evolution isn't the problem, it's people's misinterpretation of the theory that is the problem. Social Darwinism has been riding the coat tails of evolutionary theory since Darwin's time. Also, use of teh "alpha male" theory in people is just as much pseudo-science. He didn't say lesbians have no problems, but just that homosexual women are generally better treated than homosexual men. Just consider how women kissing in popular entertainment is considered sexy and cool (Madonna and Britney) or how it's fine for a woman to experiment in college with another women. The equivalents of these for men are broadly considered not normal.

I've never seen anyone say "fuck men, women must rule all". Instead I've seen men treated as rapists, pedophiles, violent abusers, undeserving students, inferior parents and just plain dumb know-nothing dads who are worthless. These stereotypes didn't appear out of thin air, but are the by-product of feminists putting down men for the "just cause" of advancing women. The problem is that they're based in malicious myths like 1 in 4 college women are raped, but are widely accepted as reality.

Most Men's Rights Advocates (but not the social conservatives) agree with the notion of equal rights for all, and support women's rights. But there's a distinction to be made between defending rights, and treating femininity and women as superior to anything and everything male, which has unfortunately become an intuitive assumption among feminists. Also, feminism has birthed it's own field of inquiry into men and masculinity, but it (surprise, surprise) just reinforces all prior assumptions and…

Feminism has become a female supremacy movement after achieving its original purpose: the machinery was still in place so it looked for something new to grind. The problem isn't women entering these fields or leaving work for a period of time to raise children, its the fact that when they return they do not end up returning to research because the current system prevents them from doing so. Its not "the system" preventing them. What's preventing them is the time they choose to take out of a career to pursue an incompatible life goal. You do not have the right to have a baby anymore than I have the right to take a year off to go mountaineering, then exp…

it's just that a lot of games that are really competitive like FPS and fighting games usually don't interest women because of their content and subject matter. You've got it wrong. You're assuming the natural state of everything is a 50-50 gender split, and that any "imbalance" must be a deviation from that norm. To do this is to confuse what "is" with what "ought to be". There is no imperative for computer games developers to make "Extreme Baking Commune III" or whatever it is that you think wo…

Good job, but I've been subscribed to this subreddit since it was less than a tenth of its current membership. The "conspiracy" that you speak of pops up ever now and then, but its critical error is in the inconsistency in which its mass influence is applied. It's very easy for the n00b women here to spout platitudes about the principles of equality, but for many I suspect that their attitudes won't be so sympathetic when applied to practical issues. This is a good point. People to tend see patterns in their social group (or country), and infer that it must be a biological result of human nature. But actually, there are different patterns for different groups. People like to overestimate how much is determined by biology because it makes their arguments seem stronger.

No, you're wrong. "Alpha male" is not a "biological concept" because its used in the study of animal behaviour (ethology), and not biology. Ethology to animals is like sociology to humans. When studying social relations, the concepts can be open to interpretation, change and review. And as a matter of fact, the term "alpha male" was actually coined to describe a position in a wolf pack, but it's now considered inaccurate and "breeder male" is used instead. tl;dr: using big words doesn't make you…

This kind of post arose in an earlier period of this subreddit's existence, when around reddit it was widely considered a seriously defensible point that men are the primary abusers of children. In fact, it is women. So, while you might think it intuitive now that "women can be abusive to children, just as much as men", that wasn't always a generally acceptable opinion.

Some context: Japan, together with most Asian and African countries, is not a signatory to the 1980 Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction, which obliges signatories to promptly return abducted children to their country of habitual residence. So basically, you want to take your daughter to your church, and your wife doesn't want you to take your daughter to your church. Capitalism is diverse, so it's a bit silly to say that it always does this or that. However, I will say that current Western capitalism is actually legally too restrictive in terms of copyright issues, to the extent that creativity and innovation are being stifled. This is where you are plainly wrong, and subscribing to an old, disproven view of child asexuality. Children do experience sexual gratification before puberty: masturbation is common from early childhood, and about a fifth of people have reported childhood sex play with siblings. I'm mostly just worried about kids being able to develop their own autonomous sexuality with their peers. So if you had a kid who started masturbating in public, you wouldn't intervene? One of the things that basically characterizes an adult is that two or four years isn't all that long. But for children the period from roughly 14 to 18 is really, really critical. In two years Bieber will almost certainly have completed his psychological and social maturation and will thus be prepared for all the real adult sex and sexuality he wants. I probably should have been less general: I think many Asian countries have fantastic artists, but eccentric tastes are nowhere near as widely appreciated as Westerners are willing to accept. I think the problem is that East Asian cultures tend to value conformity over originality. I live in Korea, and everywhere I look I see copies of America. The popular Samsung Galaxy phones look just like the iPhones. Many coffee shops have a logo and lettering just like Starbucks. I'm talking about the modern era too. Asian nationalism is a thousand times more maniacal than any Western version. East Asians don't care for multiculturalism and have no tradition of respect for rights - they are typically unaware that their arrogant racism is even offensive. At least Westerners have a historical respect for freedom of speech, but after all, we did come up with the concept.
/r/MensRights10/01/11 02:46 PM
18

Not true. Westerners tend to think its good to have self criticism and honest debate, whereas East Asians cultures tend to take any admission of weakness as an enormous insult. Why? Because maintaining the outward appearance of stability of the social structure is of utmost importance to the Confucian tradition. On the other hand the Western approach is traceable back to the respect we have for Socrates who walked around stirring up shit on the streets.

For all of the cramming of classics that go on, those Chinese kids will produce nothing original in terms of culture. That's the way it is East Asian culture: copy, copy, copy, copy then copy some more. If you want to enjoy the fruits of creativity, then you have to allow freedom. Also, what a racist bitch. Many East Asians are raised with a strong belief in their own inherent cultural and even racial superiority, but will never have the strength of character to admit their own flaws.

The problem is that the people around you will usually have similar hunches to you. But there are always many more people who will completely disagree. So, if you want to change the opinions of those other people, the best way to do it is to provide them with strong proof that your hunches are superior. The victim soon after told her husband, apparently also in the hotel, who became angry and called the police leading to the accused's arrest at the hotel. It seems like there's something fishy here: I wonder if there wouldn't have been a rape accusation if the "victim" wasn't married, consider…

Women have had voting rights for over a hundred years in some countries. Why the hell haven't they, being 51% of the population, voted for their desired proportion of women in government? Also, appointing anyone to positions of executive power is a blatantly anti-democratic act. If being a feminist means being anti-democratic, then consider me anti-feminist.

I've met an unsettling number of feminists who'll say something like "yeah she has some extreme views, but some of the points she makes are relevant". Her work still gets seriously taught and discussed in feminist courses in universities. Its kind of scary because there is no fucking way that her type of hate speech would be allowed to be taken so seriously in any other ideology.

Fallacy: argument from authority. The social structure of wolf packs has nothing in common with current Western dating customs. Its just that meatheads like you think wolves seem pretty badass, so you misapply the term in a deluded sense of pseudo-scientific self cock stroking. In fact, the term "alpha male" is no long even credibly regarded by wolf researchers, as its only useful in talking about the very few relatively large packs where there are multiple litters.
/r/MensRights27/11/10 03:00 PM
1

The alpha male theory is full of shit. If you read the article, the women interviewed talked about their affairs with married men. Its got nothing to do with the wolf pack analogy that you're trying to force on to much the much more complex issue of the current state of Western intimate relationships which are affected by culture, history, media, and human ideas of ethics and personal fulfillment.

Why the hell are you quoting Virginia Woolf to me? Is it the early 20th century now? No. It shits me to tears that feminists need to continually dig up the grievances of long forgotten past waves to find something to get upset about. for the whole of recorded history men's sexuality has not only been prioritized before that of women, but used as an actual tool of oppression against women Nope, I'm not going to concede that point. You're hinting at a patriarchal conspiracy where none exists. There's no tool. There's no oppressor. While it is true that men take the top jobs in society, it is also true that they take the lowest jobs too. There are so many ways to interpret that, and it can be linked to so many other issues such as the age of consent, freedom of artistic expression, relation to porn in general. The standard of the courts now is "the best interests of the child" which is consistently judged to be with the mother having primary custody. Its a fake excuse to dismiss the parent's interests as irrelevant, and then favour one of those parents based on their sex. There are two reasons this is relevant. Firstly, pornography and masturbation are treated by feminists and conservatives as evil, unnatural rape-promoters. They want it banned and its use punished. However, in reality, masturbation is a a natural act practiced by all men. And if there is a link between porn and rape, research suggests it is an inverse relationship. Secondly, anti-pedophilia hysteria has claimed the lives of many innocent men. Often only an accusation has to be made, and that cau…

Equal rights for women often directly translates into equal rights for men. I disagree because attempts to correct inequality can easily go too far. And popular feminist analysis too often relies on paranoid exaggeration and generalisation (read: patriarchy) to make itself perpetually relevant. I wonder if "penetrating her in a horrible way" and "complete defilement" refers to anal sex. I get the sense that is what the judge was implying without actually saying it. Perhaps the man was engaging in an act normal to him, but disliked by or unknown to the woman.

I went to a very left wing university and I personally knew most of the women involved in the women's center, and they tended to be radical lesbian feminists who used the resources gain recruits and promote their niche political beliefs. They weren't all bad people, but many had a deep, ideological hate for men. I'd speculate that this type of center is irrelevant to almost all students, but they still exist because nobody can really be bothered to fight them to the end.

I wonder if the greater number of single mothers compared to single fathers might increase the statistics for women overall. However, presumably single parents are in the minority. Also, parents only account for about a third of all abuse. While it would be interesting to see the gender split of abusers for the other two thirds, this still has relevant implications for how custody is awarded. Do you have a link to the FOI document?

There is a conservative component to the MR movement, but they try to tie MR into their criticisms of progressive Western social changes since the 1960s. While I disagree with their interpretations and solutions, I think they did actually lay the groundwork for the MR movement.

Grasseaters are a typical example. However, the point still remains: some cultures are very manly by traditional Western standards but that doesn't stop platonic physical contact between men. Overzealous, paranoid homophobia is what's damaging, not heterosexual guys having physical contact.

Most Asian countries have no taboo against men hugging or holding hands, and yet the same men will be ultra-conservative by Western standards. Physical contact between men isn't effeminate or gay, unless you're paranoid about being gay yourself.

Here's an idea: standards naturally change over time. Take for instance, that at the beginning of the 20th century, a pot belly on a man was considered to be a desirable signal of masculinity. In contrast, its now considered a sign of unhealthiness.

Timidity is a feminine trait, yes, that's what I am saying. Great. But I wasn't asking for a clarification. I was stating that you're wrong. Those are clearly manly traits. No, I think you'll find that according to the pre-60s Western conception of masculinity (which you apparently ascribe to), man was seen as a rational being and not influenced by anything as emotional as a hot temper. While he might have used violence or force, it was seen as legitimate because it was measured and justified. B…

I really have to thank your for posting a source that destroys the very argument you're trying to make: Feminist positions on pornography currently break down into three rough categories. You're comparing one sociological theory with one piece of population research. Is this really what you think epitomises these interdependent fields? There are assumptions inherent in all statistical research, and employing numbers doesn't mean you rely any less on theoretical constructs. The social sciences explore the nature of those constructs, and if it gets your knickers in a twist, you'll just have to deal with it.

And I'm saying up until recently human social organisation primarily involved small localised communities and extended families. Also, a few millenia ago, depending on where you were, you'd probably be living in a tribal village with an established hierarchy, traditions and standards of conduct that wouldn't simply allow you stroll around slaughtering at whim.

If think you're to trying to give genetic explanations to a social situation that hasn't been around that long. The nuclear family and choice of marriage partner gained prominence only last century. If there is a genetic explanation, I think its got more to do with people being less discriminatory about who they fucked in the past, compared to modern times.

Pretty much the same question has just been posted on r/askreddit Anyway, my two cents: Men tend to have a drive to make things, take things apart, analyse, discuss and argue about technicalities. The real difference between a man and a boy is just sexual maturity. And in addition to that, there is a great diversity of similarities and differences that can exist between the two dependent upon the individuals in consideration. You're asking a question that rednecks want to hear, so they can define it and police it according to their own interpretation. But really, there is no universal, essential, non-biological definition of a man. I'd rather hear and answer the question: What makes a goo…

This a little off topic, but the quote reminds me of this article, which discusses how the average BMI has been increasing since the 70s. Additionally, I think even an overweight fat man is seen as more masculine than a skinny guy. There are archetypes of masculine skinny men, such as the long distance runner or the womanising musician, but we tend to wrongly ignore these in favour of a simpler big=straight/masculine thin=gay/feminine dichotomy.

You're losing focus of the point. We're discussing conception by deception, NOT the effects of having a child by unplanned pregnancy. And besides, women have a choice as to whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy and avoid "being stuck with an unwanted child", but men are allowed no such recourse. And that is unjust.
/r/MensRights06/11/09 02:36 AM
1

I think you've overlooked the whole "women have become systemically legally favoured in child support and access" phenomenon. This is exactly why women are primarily the perpetrators in sham "accidental" pregnancies: they're guaranteed financial security and legal priority. Men on the other hand, are treated as a perpetual checkbook. This is why there's a reaction of disbelief to a story about a man trying to get an unwilling partner pregnant. If its true, he's either a masochist or a moron.

I think that's already well dealt with in broader society by both men and women, whereas anti-male sexism tends to be overlooked and even generally accepted by, unfortunately, both men and women.

I disagree mainly because this subreddit tends to be very cautious of hypocrisy, and there's a general sense that injustice and inequality can't be corrected by injustice and inequality. Sure, we're not about to start going door to door fund-raising to set up lesbian utopian communes, but anyone with an 'eye for an eye' attitude tends to get heavily criticised and downvoted.

feminists don't like women's magazines either. But for different reasons: its definitely not because of the simplification and misrepresentation of men. You might have a point if it was commonplace for feminists to correct slander and misinformation about men, but unfortunately that's not the case.

I want a masculinist theory that grows out of feminism, that works with women instead of against, that understands that all the so-called "man-hating" issues of feminism have much more to do with backlash than with fundamental philosophies of the work.
