I have worked in two different prisons, a domestic violence shelter, and a mental health center. I don't see how anyone can live in the world and not see that both genders can be equally good and bad and can also be victims. It honestly just baffles me.
I am a woman and my cousin and I grew up in a family of extreme abuse. We've been reflecting lately on how many people we told about it growing up and how nothing was ever done about it. Nobody ever stepped up for us and tried to stop it. What we've come up with is that raising children back then was different. Abuse was brushed away as just someone being a parent and disciplining their kid instead of what it was. This is kind of the same direction I see male domestic violence / sexual assault going. I think it's going to be very difficult for males to overcome this and get the help that they deserve, but I think education is the key. Women have done a decent job at educating and making aware that domestic violence and sexual violence are an important issue that need attention. People have done a phenomenal job raising awareness of child abuse and what that looks like. What I'm seeing a lack of is specifically the male voice.
This community and others like it are wonderful but it isn't enough to encompass an all gender encompassing view of the issue. There needs to be a lot more awareness and education going on if we ever hope to move it to a new direction. As a human I hate seeing anyone suffer and I'm truly sorry that OP and others like OP had to go through being denied validation and justice. As a victim I'm angered that anyone ever has to be put in the position of feeling powerless all over again. As a woman I'm ashamed that anyone would be so heartless as to say that these things can't possibly happen because it was a woman perpetrator. I sincerely hope that OP and others like OP get the help that they need and deserve. I also hope that I can continue to make myself useful in educating others that these issues affect everyone and everyone deserves help. It truly is shameful when we can't help each other in times of need.
