First off, let me note that I am a victim of domestic violence and a few other nasty things from my past (full story upcoming), so in order to deal with these things, I have been going to see a counselor at a place in the town I live in where you can get help for free if you're uninsured. Recently, I have developed some severe sleeping problems, so I decided to get something to help me sleep. I had my first appointment at the med clinic yesterday, and the nurse (a very nice lady) was asking me about my "social history". I told her about being a DV victim, and what my ex-girlfriends did to me. She shook her head and said, "I so sorry that happened to you. That's horrible. Did you try to get help?" I told her that I had, but to no avail, and told her about the time I called a DV hotline, only to be told that "you're an idiot, men can't be abused," and get hung up on. This lady's eyes shot wide open, her mouth agape, and said, in a stunned voice, "You're kidding me!" I assured her that I wasn't, and she shook her head again. "That is so horrible, how can they do that? I'm glad you're ok." Just interesting that she responded with such anger about how they had treated me. I'm glad there are people that are willing to help DV victims, regard of gender.
