No, this is not an excellent case of parental alienation. This is a case of one parent going completely off the rails for years (drug addiction and mental illness), cleaning up, wanting to come back around, and being told to fuck off.

This is why custodial parents with a druggie ex (particularly male custodial parents) need to file for TPR once their ex meets the legal criteria for abandonment.

This man certainly had the right to take the case to court. And assuming he's currently sober and stable, he deserves ongoing contact. Bu no, people who get themselves so fucked up that they CAN'T parent for years on end don't get to show up later and attempt to replace the stepparent who has actually been doing the job. It's unethical when women do it and it's unethical when men do it. Women, of course, are far more likely to succeed in doing it.
