Here's an idea, take away any incentive for profit off of misery by revoking private non government agencies from running prisons in the first place. If governments can't handle prisons themselves, then maybe they need to fix the laws that create so many inmates to begin with. The fact that prisons can force people to work for shit wages only proves slavery is still in existence in the US. If a prisoner refuses to work, hes often threatened with a serious form of torture, solitary confinement . I don't care what their original crime/conviction was, how can a state or society claim to be any better than the criminals they seek to punish if they become criminals themselves violating basic human rights ? Its pretty clear that the US prison system is an instituted for profit slave labor system and that fact should be like a cancer eating away at the legitimacy of the US government in the minds of its citizens .
