No and there's no reason the would anyways. It's very hard to pretend to be a victim if you use the truth on this one. Secondly the 1/5 claim lumps together a bunch of different types of assault, so although it sound retarded, its "technically" correct. Its a matter of using the statistic to your advantage. Thirdly the more these people advocate that 1/5 is the truth, the more funding/ help etc they get. So why should they say its false when it gives them huge power over everyone else?

Alright, let's talk about this. The 1 in 5 statistic is based on the 2010 CDC NISVS report. It reflects the rate of sexual violence per lifetime, not per year, and aggregates rapes, sexual assaults, and attempted rapes, including those that were not convicted or reported. The article that you linked doesn't cite its source-- which is in and of itself unacceptable-- but as it's reporting a crime rate, those figures are likely to reflect either the number of reported or convicted rapes (not including sexual assault or attempted rape, which the CDC includes) in one year, and are based on the entire NO population rather than the women in that population. It's also not statistically accurate to use data from a single city to infer the rate throughout the country, or to infer rates over time. If we want to effectively challenge these stats, we need to be vigilant with our math and demonstrate a thorough understanding of public health research methodology.

They don't have to care about being ridiculous when the public doesn't know the truth. Men have failed to effectively stand up for themselves for decades and I'm not the least bit surprised women's activists have become complacent with advancing false or misleading stats as a result.

Of course not. How could they ? Everybody believes it right along with them. It's the same as any other stupid belief that a person could have : If everybody else believes it you neither feel compelled to question its validity nor do you feel like a fool for repeating it.

I live in China and people here have a lot of stupid ideas about health. For example , pregnant women shouldn't drink cold water. If you have a cold you should only drink hot water. You should try to avoid the air from from air conditioners because it's not "natural" and is therefore bad for your health. Really , it's amazing how completely illogical most of it is but for the purposes of this conversation the point is that people believe it.

Sure , the youngest , best educated don't believe any of that crap but they're the minority. The old folks will tell you to apply pressure to the palm of your hand if you have a toothache and nobody laughs at them or thinks it's stupid. Why would they ? Everybody else agrees with them , considers it "common sense" , and thinks YOU'RE the idiot for not understanding.

You have to believe for it to be true. As long as you believe , it's true. In medicine we'd call that the placebo effect but in sociology we call it progressive thinking.
