Historically, what portion of all men have attended university?

Until the 1960s, very few people of either gender attended university. There wasn't much demand for such education and I guess it was expensive for them too. So far more men go to university today than in the past in absolute numbers.

I'd say that before the 1960s-80s, the vast majority of all people who had an education were men. Most boys and girls never learned how to read or write, as they were needed out in the field or stuck in factories (In the early 20th and throughout the 19th centuries) to earn money to even EAT that day, so often there was not enough money to send kids off to school. Not to mention that public schools in the U.S. didn't commonly exist until Horace Mann and Henry Barnard helped reform the schooling system in some parts of the United States in the early/mid 1800s so you really DID have to be somewhat wealthy to get an education, and if there was a public school in your state and it was somewhat close to you, you would likely have to wake up very early in the morning and walk several miles to school. Also, your parents would most likely not allow you to leave the farm or skip work for the day because they wouldn't be able to feed all of their children or pay rent etc. and so the cycle continues.

Now that my short rant is over, here is a wikipedia article about education in the enlightenment, with some statistics on literacy rates in France between boys and girls. The rate of literacy increased more rapidly in more populated areas and areas where there was mixture of religious schools.

"The literacy rate in England in 1640s was around 30 percent for males, rising to 60 percent in mid-18th century. In France, the rate of literacy in 1686-90 was around 29 percent for men and 14 percent for women, it increased to 48 percent for men and 27 percent for women.[6]"

Over the last 30-40 years I would guess the number of women who attended university is equal to or greater than the number of men who attended a university, or got a higher education through out the history of human kind.
