While personal negative eugenics is widespread (e.g., contraception, abortifacients, abortion, euthanasia), we appear now also to be on the threshold of a kind of personal positive eugenics, where certain characteristics can be planned into the reproductive process based upon the desires of the parents. The impact of such artificial intercessions on the future of human reproduction remains to be seen, but what seems clear is that such intercessions are here to stay. How far Wells would have embraced them,even given his advocacy of the more primitive equivalents of his own day, must remain an open question. What cannot be denied, however, is that Wells’s support for negative eugenics in the first instance, birth control in the second –and ultimately the eugenic empowerment of women to choose “conspicuous and distinguished sires” without depriving themselves of an active sex life –contributed to the eugenics of person choice which we now appear to be moving towards.
