MRA here (married). If you're married then it is "our wallet". It's kind of the point. One kitty, shared goals, life built together. My wife has chosen to be a stay at home mom so that we can build some productive humans :) How, and in what world, should that mean that she is in some way beholden to me for handouts. It's ridiculous to even think about it. Everything we spend is budget based and decisions are made together. I can see the annoyance if your partner is out spending all the money but then that's a separate issue.

If you don't want to have an "our" mentality then marriage probably shouldn't be something you consider, you're missing the point.

To be fair, I have a some friends who are in their 30's, and the wife works, and the husband doesn't, and he commonly refers to her money as their money, stating specifically that since they're married, half of it belong to him, anyway.

So it goes both ways. haha

I like to think that when I marry a woman someday, we have kids, and she decides to stay at home while I work, I'm not going to be pissy about whose money it is. This post strikes me as being very whiny.

There's merit to this -- after all a marriage is a partnership -- but you should be able to set whichever standard you want ahead of time. Part of a partnership is agreeing on these things. Too often men capitulate because we are expected to.

My SO and I worked out a combination arrangement; we keep our own personal primary finances, but contribute equally each month into a household account from which household bills, mortgage, repairs, and occasional furniture/appliances/improvements (when there's extra). If we need more to cover something we contribute into the household account equally to do so. We both agree this is a pretty good arrangement. Of course, we both have careers, so both of us want to have dominion over our own earnings. I suppose in a breadwinner-housewife situation, this dynamic is much more complicated. The dual-income household model is not without it's flaws, but it also has certain advantages.

Well , if you're crazy enough to get married in the first place , sharing resources is just a necessary evil . You can argue about what those resources are used for but you can't really complain that only you should have access and control over any money you make . That kinda defeats the purpose of marriage in the first place .

Of course , that's all only if you're crazy enough to get married . Why any male of sound mind would marry in this day and age is the real mystery .
