keep in mind, not everything is everywhere. that said, examples of misandry, or at least anti-male sentiment, in video games can been seen by observing that mass-scale violence is only ever carried out against men. who are the disposable characters? men. who are the background characters that you shoot through hundreds at a time without a thought? men. which gender is many times more often the villain? men.

So I don't play shooters, mainly RTS and RPG

There is at least one female character in your group in every rpg since Final fantasy 2. And usually they have one badass girl, that can beat up all of the boys. Even when the main character is a male, the savior is most of the time a female.

Now of course you have those big stereotypes where the female is wearing nothing, and the male is super built and emotionless.

I think technically to have stereotypes of females, you have to place stereotypes on males, saying how those males are not like those females stereotypes. I don't like the feminists who ignore this fact, and ignore male issues as non relevant.

The biggest issue in news reporting and such is villification; a male perpetrator is always cast in a much worse light than a female perpetrator is for the same crime. When a man and a woman have a disagreement, it tends to talk about or headline what the man did, and then only later on do you find out the woman is just as much in the wrong. Women are just cast as more sympathetic; and that's an extension of our society - when a woman hits a man, people jump to thinking he cheated on her or groped her or something, when a man hits a woman, then he's just a terrible person.

There's male disposability; in a general sense, that's the belief that female life is more precious than male. When a large number of people die, they often say things like "80 people were killed, including 38 women and children"; they group the "preciousness" of women's lives with children's, but don't specify for men.

This comes out in games and movies a lot too; can you imagine the shitstorm and screams of misogyny if somebody released a shooter game where you only killed women? But most modern FPS's have you mowing down hundreds of men and it's par for the course.

So, villification and disposability; men are the bad guys, and it matters more when women are hurt.

I think it would be helpful to know what the general attitude toward the stereotypical male gender role is?

There are a bunch of people here who think all societal differences are biological in nature. I don't rule that out (it's never been disproven, after all) but think it unlikely. But most people are against the men as provider, women as childminder thing (father's rights is probably the biggest men's rights issue), as well as expectations of stoicism and solving problems for yourself (leading to higher suicide rates and such).

Oh, and I've also noticed in comments that there seems to be a general distaste for feminists. It's such a broad term, so I'm not sure which type of feminists seem to be disliked here?

"Gender feminists", the type that only cares about gender rights in the context of advancing women. The issue here is that a lot of people in r/mr consider basically every person who identifies as a feminist one of these. Though this is somewhat valid in that the most public figures of feminism are these sorts.

It's distate for feminist idealogy (many/most aspects are rejected as a matter of course here), distate for the movement (their proclamation as "equal rights" with basically no emphasis on men, and things like VAWA/duluth model that put women ahead of men).

Also, how do you feel about the term "masculist?"

If somebody is actually an academic studying men's issues, then I think it's fine, but I don't like its use for regular MRAs because it makes it sound like MRAs are a mirror of feminists - which we aren't, as the MRM is an advocacy movement, and not an idealogy.
