I don't think it's pure genetic interest. If it was pure genetic interest that motivated reproduction, neither society could exist for long. Lower-class males could just adopt the alternate mating system, and thereby be able to offer females the opportunity to have sons prone to using a mating strategy whose uniqueness gave them an advantage.

Most people don't chose partners in an attempt to maximize reproductive success. They chose partners they think they'll be happy with. Same goes for having kids- you do it because you think it'll make you happy.

Evolution doesn't select for a desire to be genetically successful, it selects for a tendency to behave in ways that increase reproductive success. Admittedly, society plays a huge role in our behavioral development. But genetic self-interest is not a motivator for most individuals.

And not to be an ass, but there's a typo on the paragraph describing the perfect dad society. I don't normally point that stuff out, but it's your blog not a comment, and it seems like something you might want to know.

But the inclination to chose mates based on the resources they offer is seen in numerous species, not just humans. The knowledge that a mate will help raise offspring is arguably an attraction trigger as well- ovulating women report being attracted to men they perceive as sensitive and feminine, possibly because those men are more likely to be 'their' mate as opposed to promiscuous. In animals, many species chose mates based on courtship gifts or nest quality.

The three major mating strategies are generally agreed to be successfully communicating that you're genetically fit, have access to resources you're willing to share, or that you're just plain sexy regardless of how that affects your fitness at non-mating activities. It's most likely that humans rely on a combination of these. The 'perfect dad' society is seen in nature as well, without any serious societal norms (there are admitted extra pair copulations, because as long as you don't get caught, it's a really good reproductive strategy. True monogamy only exists in deep-sea fish and insects)

I don't think eroding is quite the right word for what's happening to societal norms, I think they're shifting and evolving. There's still pressure to interact with potential partners in a certain way, and stick to certain behavioral patterns, but those patterns are not what they were. It's not a return to our baser instincts, it's a reaction to different social norms.

Thank you for a well written and in depth reply. I disagree with some of your arguments.

First, "well- ovulating women report being attracted to men they perceive as sensitive and feminine" is not true see "Ovulating women favour dominant men's smell" http://www.nature.com/news/2005/050704/full/news050704-6.html as well as many other peer-reviewed articles.

"I don't think eroding is quite the right word for what's happening to societal norms" did you read eat pray love or any other modern divorce porn?

To the best of my knowledge, all societies which made it out of hunter-gatherer stage regulated sexuality, today individualism is the new religion, every man for himself, and the social structure IMO reverts back to pre-civilization where 80% of the women managed to reproduce, while only 40% of the men did.
