I think that in our society reacting emotionally is always frowned upon, regardless of gender. It can be seen even clearer in other societies, Japan is probably a good one.

In general, people find complaining, whining, excusing, arguing etc obnoxious and don't want to hear it. Gaslighting is a good method to stop it because making somebody doubt themselves works like logic can't. This is of course a problem when their complaints are legitimate.

Yes, women are shamed for being too emotional. But men are shamed for not being stoic, which is essentially the same thing. I don't see why one should be worse than the other - and in general, I would assert that it is acceptable for women to be emotional far more often than men. EDIT: In regards to sadness, exhaustion it's more acceptable for women. I'm very unsure about anger; men can be applauded for being assertive but they run the risk of being a bully.

When someone is overreacting to a situation I tell them to calm the fuck down.

If you don't want to be told to calm down then don't behave like a toddler.

Sometimes people are aggressive and need to be identified as such. I don't know why but I find it much easier to brush off aggressive women than aggressive men, obviously that could be my shortcomings, or it could be that an affecting proportion of (typically low income) men are too aggressive, acting either originally or echoing their situation.
