Proposal for a White House Council on Boys and Men

I am opposed to a special council for men/boys as I am for women/girls.

If we "need" a council/committee for an issue it should not be gendered(or drawn over racial or ethnic lines for that matter). It seems to just perpetuate an "us versus them" approach. If a particular issue affects one group more than the other than they'll get help and the minority of the other group(s) will get help too. We don't want to use the VAWA model of solving problems.

If any one can do it Warren Farrell can do it. Warren Farrell was a former leader of National Organization of Women (NOW).

If there is to be one it will be headed by somebody like Hugo Schwyzer. It will be much worse for boys than if they did not have such a council at all.

I sympathize with Tracy Morgan Freeman's desire to move past the "us versus them" tone in so much talk about gender today. But sympathy does not necessarily mean agreement. If we are facing genuine issues of gender, there's not much point in discussing them without reference to gender! How do we discuss the miseducation of boys without talking about how best to educate boys? In any case, the cat of dissension is out of the bag. The society is drenched in a new kind of sexual and gender bias. It is invidious. It does not wish its adversaries well. And it is everywhere. The last thirty years have unmasked gender-blind discourse as a utopian fantasy, and it is more of a fantasy now than it has been in nearly a century.
