tl;dr: CYA - Cover Your Ass. (at all times)

Lesson (for anyone in the health care field or considering it) - never check somebody's femoral pulse unless you can think of a definitive reason to. Furthermore, never put yourself in any situation with a psychiatric patient that can be easily construed against you. Lastly, if you work in an ambulance, and it has a panic button on the drive-cam, use it! Most of them record from 15 seconds before you hit it to 15 seconds after it goes off. That way you can have proof of no wrong-doing.

It sounds like his big mistake was (1) patting the patient down, (2) checking femoral pulse. I, too, would have considered having the patient take off her pants to inspect for any wounds (because cutting the thighs is common), but there's no way I would have ever patted her down or checked her femoral pulse. If you think your patient is packing any kind of heat, just call the cops and let them sort it out.
