I volunteer specifically with the Innocence Project of Texas. The great part about Dallas is that they have kept nearly all of the evidence from the crime, so we can test DNA from cases from the 80's.

Recently they exonerated Cornelius Dupree for supposed aggravated robbery which took course during a rape. He was in prison for 30 years before being released.

While I can't go deeply into details of cases that I've worked on due to a confidentiality clause, you'd be surprised on the number of cases where the conviction was based on pure testimony and poor police work. This makes it nearly impossible to exonerate these prisoners, since we have to prove their innocence. It's heart breaking to have to close a case where a man had no reason to be found guilty, but there was nothing more we could do.

The best we can hope for in these cases is to exonerate individuals based on DNA testing. The state does not provide DNA testing, so the organization is forced to pay for it (If I remember correctly we aren't even reimbursed if the individual is found to be innocent through the DNA test).

I'm just a bottom of the totem pole volunteer that does case review, so I don't know all of the specifics.
