To comment, a bit, these officers aren't innocent by any means, they breached their standard of trust to civilians, and by admission, one of them made out with a nearly passed out woman he'd been called to help. That said, the case showed that there was due cause to believe that the woman's memories of actually having sex with one of the officers was unfounded.

What bothered me with the response, though, was just the resounding "guilty" that came from politicians, advocates, and even protesters. I can't imagine the society we'd live in if our system of laws allowed them to get their way.

People should get used to this kind of verdict, where no one is happy. This is what happens in rape cases.

It's a he said, she said thing. If the men in question don't admit to having sex with her, and she cannot remember, and there's no DNA, well then there's no case. Sure they behaved terribly as police. They took advantage of their position. False reports, lying about their presence there. For any "civilian" that would be enough to convict.

But in the end they didn't admit to a crime, and no one else witnessed it, so ... they are "not guilty" . Not satisifactory by any means. Maybe they did rape her. Certainly they violated the public trust. But without evidence of rape, there can be no conviction.

The right thing happened here. Not guilty is the correct verdict given the evidence. We cannot imprison people for "probably" or "I think so". It needs to be beyond a reasonable doubt, and this one didn't make it.

I can understand women's groups feeling this is wrong. I can understand the backlash.
