I'd assume that the insurance is mandatory by the state and if that is the case then it shouldn't discriminate by gender.

The ruling ordered changes effective Dec. 21, 2012, to auto insurance, life insurance, medical coverage and other plans, potentially affecting tens of millions of customers across the continent. For example, many women driver would see their car insurance costs rise even though they are considered safer on the road.

I love how they took this angle and ran with it for nearly the rest of the article but didn't even hint at a possibility that men may pay more in health insurance even though they tend to cost less. On the health insurance angle they don't even compare women with men like they did with auto insurance.

Or perhaps I'm being nitpicky?

Men pay more because they drive more, not because women are better drivers. Women get in more collisions per mile. (June 1998 Epidemiology)

But that is beside the point -- the problem is not who is the better driver as a demographic. It's discrimination because you are lumping together a large group of people and treating them differently as a group instead of individuals. It wouldn't be okay to charge only Jewish drivers more, so it isn't okay to charge men more.

There is the statistic that men are more likely to drunk intoxicated than women. Should I pay more because of this? Of course not... because I do not drive under the influence! Men who drive drunk have absolutely nothing to do with me.

It's discrimination.

On the CBC they discussed this for my region. Men pay more than women, and it's being considered discriminatory. I think they're planning on making everyone pay the same rate as the men, but I think they should find a happy medium.
