I'm sure there are some feminists who would like to raise the age of consent to 99 for women, thereby making all sex legally rape.

Oh for fucks sakes. This is ridiculous.

I think it comes down to people shouldn't abuse other people. And when abuse does happen (and it will, unfortunately), it would help if people had a better notion of healing, trauma prevention and restorative justice. Eye for an eye doesn't build strong communities.

Reasonable enough, particularly in regards to healing after trauma, and I'd add to that, removing the stigma of reporting such traumas, particularly when men/boys have less support. However you still skirt around what I'm asking. Do you, and MR supporters generally, find nothing morally or criminally wrong with a 48-year-old adult and 14-year-old kid having "an affair." What about a 12-year-old and 46-year-old? Or a 10-year-old and 44-year-old? Where do you draw the line?

Your question has a lie at the core.

You assume a 16-year-old is an emotionally-mature 16-year-old.

If a 20-year-old is emotionally 8 years old because of childhood trauma, when they have sex, they will experience sex as an emotional 8-year-old.

Which is why I think your obsession with age will never yield a healthy answer. Focus on health and maturity first. The age thing will take care of itself. Which is to say, since so many people need me to spell this out: a healthy 12-year-old and a healthy 48-year-old would not typically engage in intercourse, and I would feel concern if they did.

Personally, based on my life experience, I have no problem with the age of consent around 14-16 years. 12 seems too young, and 18 seems oppressively late. And if we look at the statistics of when women start having sex, the age ranges I've stated roughly agree with what most women decide for themselves.

Part of health is making informed decisions. I believe it's important to give children the information they need to decide for themselves. Part of our problem is many young kids go into puberty without knowing what sex entails or what the short- and long-term consequences are. We should not be surprised if they are unable to make reasonable decisions as a result. We teach young people that to be cool and accepted, you need to flaunt your sexuality (women) or flaunt your sexual achievements (men). Yet how many young, sexually active people understand the gamut of STDs, pregnancy, child support and family law, etc. How come we have fashion shows for girls, but not mock-child-support and mock-family-court for young boys? Just to make a point.

So to end, I think your obsession on age is misguided, dangerous, and ultimately counterproductive. You're trolling for moral outrage; an activity I find that abhorrent.
