Really? REALLY? Because I didn't see any "ideas" being discussed in this article. Just plenty of fear o' women. Is she consenting now? Is she consenting now? Is she consenting... now? Because implicitly, if she's not consenting, you're a

I don't find that line of logic remotely sexy. In fact, with such an emphasis on "consent" being required for sexual enjoyment, and the fact that even saying "I consent to this!" can later be invalidated ("oh! I felt pressured! He might have hit me! I just went along!"), the only way men ought to be able to feel sexual pleasure is when they masturbate to their own reflection in a locked bathroom. Anything else is potentially litigious--and depending on whose bathroom it is, you might be screwed even then.

Fuck consent--what ever happened to desire?

Consent should begin with the consenters. Though adults can take advantage of children, it's hard to define both underage boys and underage girls as either able to or not able to consent.

I think there should be a separation of minor and major; below major, minors should be able to be relatively free in their sexual exploits, provided nobody gets hurt (just like majors). However, the serious infraction should be crossing that "wall of separation," if you will; it puts undue pressure on one party and gives undue influence on the other.

Other countries can define their consent laws as they wish; I think 18 is perfectly fine as a general dividing line for consent, though some boys may still be emotionally immature at that age. Any younger and you risk harming the developing male's psyche; any older and you force nubile (marriageable) women to wait even longer to start dating.

We have all lost in recent decades from AIDS, but there are other losses that afflict us, from illness and global conflict; and there is the fact as well that women and minorities, including sexual minorities, are, as a community, subjected to violence, exposed to its possibility, if not its realization. This means that each of us is constituted politically in part by virtue of the social vulnerability of our bodies--as a site of desire and physical vulnerability, as a site of a publicity at once assertive and exposed. Loss and vulnerability seem to follow from our being socially constituted bodies, attached to others, at risk of losing those attachments, exposed to others, at risk of violence by virtue of that exposure.

So what, exactly, am I mischaracterizing about Butler's position?
