19-year-old guy sleeps with 15-year-old girl, and pleads guilty to "misdemeanor 1 Unlawful sexual conduct with a minor." He could receive a sentence of "10 years of registration as a tier I sex offender," but due to ex post facto application of the Adam Walsh child protection act, his sentence was later lengthened to 15 years of registration. It is unclear if he spent the 6 months in jail that he could have.

I was arrested on a warrant for my arrest, pending a charge of Felony for failure to verify my address. (My registration [went] from once a year, to twice a year.)

I hadn't realized the sex-offender registry worked like this. Apparently the registrant must positively affirm their address to law enforcement twice per year, and failure to do so constitutes an additional felony violation.

This ongoing punishment seems odd to me. I thought the paradigm of incarceration punishment was to remove offenders from society, give them a chance at rehabilitation, and then reintegrate them into society.

Instead, the ongoing requirement for self-denunciation requires Orwellian non-self-loyalty, and denies the possibility of reform. I am suspicious that the ongoing registration does more to create a permanent "suspect" and "criminal" class than it does to protect the public.

Does anyone versed in criminology care to affirm the rationale behind "required registration" penalties?

Of course he is now unemployable, since "sex offender" is stamped on him with scarlet letters of shame.

Our justice system is fucked. In this, and many other instances. How can you expect someone to "rehabilitate" from whatever their crime may be, and become a contributing member of society when they can't even get hired at McDonalds after having a criminal record? Even a single fucking misdemeanor can ruin your chance at any legitimate employment.

It is completely stupid. Girls of 15 everywhere are having sex today. Girls of 14 everywhere are having sex today. They're not pure and they're not special. The law needs to reflect the realities of the street and stop penalizing people for participating in common cultural practices. Members of the legal profession are well aware of what's going on and should not be enabling prosecutions that bring the law into disrepute.

Eh, this is just a continuation of the idea that the male is at fault in a mutual situation. It is no different from the idea that if a drunk male and a drunk female have sex, that he took advantage of her, even though she may have been the instigator. Guys know that double standard exists though, so they should also know not to get caught in those situations.

My state actually has very lenient laws when it comes to sex with minors. 16 is the AoC, but I think it can go even lower if the age difference is less than 4 years.
