When western society can no longer legitimately claim to offer the average man a wife, some kids and somewhere half decent to live with his family, then it is no longer in the average man's best interest to operate within the rules of society. I wonder how long it will take for this to become true and for men to realise it en mass.

The prognosis is not as sad as it seems. Over the past year I've spent a lot of time recasting myself to become the person I want to be. It sounds self-help-bullshitty, but making some fucking decisions actually works.

Pardon me if you're already doing this, but there are some folks out there who might benefit from it

Decide that you're going to excel at what you do. Figure out what good looks like and do it. This one was obvious, but it's amazing how prioritizing will actually help you get shit done. Put the WoW/CoD/Hockey Night in Wherever down (or keep it on in the background) but get the important stuff done.
Decide what you actually want. Plan six different ways to do it, because someone's going to fuck at least one of them up.
Do not be deterred when shit goes wrong. As civilized men we're taught not to be angry; instead channel that anger into energy and make it happen. If someone is apologizing to you for something it's a tip off that there's an opportunity to turn the situation around.
Corollary of above: accept apologies and find out how to make the situation better for you both. You never know when you might need their help.

The article laments women moving into spaces traditionally occupied by men. This is not a bad thing; competition (as we here so often) is good. As a man you don't have to be as good, you have to be much, much better in order to stand a chance. So suck it up and do it.

The inverse is also true; there are fields wherein we have never been proficient, welcome, or desired. If you want it, go and get it. There are few things in this world that you can't get if you want, no matter how much people try to put you down.

Lastly, if you're in a relationship, love like you never have before, but assume the responsibilities of the relationship as if you're single. Cleaning, cooking, taking out the garbage; just do it and do it well. Excel for both of you; a good partner will elevate themselves to the same level. Expect little, give a lot. Balance the scale of being logical and romantic.

Live like the man you want to be. We're not declining, we're facing a challenge to our identity. Re-write it the way you want it and live an unapologetically good life. Instead of flipping the future off, look at it and say "you don't scare me one fucking bit." Make the future regret the idea that it could question your capabilities. Be one of the smart ones who sets the record straight about what it means to be a man.
