When I was growing up in Boston there was sales tax charged on women's belts but not men's.

Of course the gender bias is hypocritical and absurd. Here's another perspective:

As a businessman, I'm required to implement and collect these insane taxes. The logistics of tracking what gets taxed at what rates, then documenting each category of sales, adds enormously to my transaction costs...which of course gets passed on to the consumer.

I am forced to be a collection agent by the IRS, and instead of spending my time and effort to bring better products and services to the public...I am filling out paperwork. Thanks, bureaucracy.
