If it were only the mother, I doubt she would be convicted of anything at all, or would just get some symbolic sentence because "there needs to be some accountability."

It's just that people have no problem sending men to jail, regardless of the crime or sentence. And in crimes perpetrated by couples, the males generally get the longer sentence, because they are seen as the evil ones, who convince the females to go against their gentle nature.

When Etta Ann Urdiales was murdered in Colorado, two completely different juries convicted two different people of the crime. Both juries believed there was only one murderer. One convicted Bobbie Hogan, a woman. The other convicted Jess Jacobs, a man. She got 10 years in prison. He was put to death. This case is just one example of the rampant discrimination men face in criminal courts throughout the United States.

Some jurors may have been confused by Oregon's manslaughter law or found it inappropriate to the circumstances.

"The word itself is not pretty," Santos said of the charge.

"We all know they (the Worthingtons) didn't do it on purpose, that they had no intention of harming their child," Santos said.

Somehow the fact that someone too stupid to know the difference between murder and manslaughter can be on a jury is almost more disturbing than the fact they let the mother off scot-free. In a just world, both of the parents would have been convicted of manslaughter.

"Nothing worse than a bad cold" is potentially fatal without medical care, even for adults. It's what killed George Washington, although he was admittedly an old man.
