My two best friends were married (both Gen X) and after 10 years it started falling apart. But, with beaming pride, I watched them find an amicable breaking point and they didn't saddle one another with lawyers or court costs. They are now friends and he sees his child when he wants to.

I will often just remind them how special I think they are for having done just that. Maybe Gen x and beyond learned something from those shit-fuck baby boomers and their penchant for disastrous, hate-filled, partisan divorces...

While this finding seems like a modicum of justice, I can't shake the feeling that we've missed the boat somewhere.

Parents should be able to break up without the "toxic exchanges" as the OP puts it. Seriously, PAS just reeks of immaturity, pettiness, anger, vindictiveness... it's disgusting. Marriage or no marriage, kids or no kids, PAS or no PAS, when people have this much hostility for others, something is wrong.

Maybe how we raise people as perpetual-children is finally biting us in the ass?
