Men Are Falling Behind in Schools. And we need to have an honest conversation as to why.

As a teacher I can speak on this twofold. The first being anecdotally and the second being what I see as a cause.

1) Is this happening? (according to one teacher's POV) I teach history at the highest (AP) and lowest levels at an inner city high school, along with a leadership/mentorship program. I have noticed that the number one group of "student" that is falling behind are young boys. While certain races are more disenfranchised than others, I think the problem here is much more an issue of gender than it is race (sidenote: this is not how the issue is being discussed in academic circles). Overwhelmingly boys are way less motived, much less resilient, more apprehensive to take intellectual risks, and accept failure and complacency much sooner than girls. This is something I've witnessed across all levels of students (in AP classrooms and remedial/low level class rooms)

2) I personally believe that there is a correlation (especially for young men) between purpose and outcome. There are so many young men that feel as though they don't have a purpose both in school and I think larger society that they check out completely and accept less of themselves. The solution is to find purpose and celebrate that. There is a push to get women/girls into leadership positions, the reality is I have to recruit boys for my leadership program and have to cut girls to even get near a 50/50 breakdown. But I will say that when boys are given that purpose they become inspired, impassioned, and begin making huge strides in how they see themselves and their outcomes.

Feminists are the ones who always say that there is zero differences between the sexes.. Well untill this debate comes up. Well if girls do better than boys by default how come boys are doing worse academically than their fathers? This is a debate that no one is having.
