I'm not particularly interested in what Naomi Alderman - a novelist and game writer who got her start in Buffy the Vampire Slayer fanfiction according to Wikipedia - thinks would happen if hypothetically a bunch of people got electrokinesis powers. I'd just as soon guess the consequences for myself, or read some random redditor's guess, if I cared.

I'm also not interested in what Guardian deputy literary editor Justine Jordan thinks of the book. Like Alderman, she doesn't strike me as an intellectual heavyweight whose opinion is worth any special consideration.

To the extent that Ayn Rand's political philosophy makes sense in her books, it's because all of her characters behave in just the right way. If they didn't, it wouldn't. This has no bearing on whether any of it makes sense in real life where there's no author-god pulling the strings. I generally find fiction with a political message unbearable for exactly this reason - they seem to think they're proving something when they're really just expressing an opinion with extra steps.

Jesus, I was wondering what was wrong with her novel. It wasn't until you mention that that I realized her novel has fundamental flaws.

For starters, what about women who have internalized misogyny or view women as lesser sex? I'm pretty sure women of certain faiths would take this as a blessing from their gods/goddesses and attack other women instead of just men. ISIS used women as combatants as well, who are just as ruthless as their male counterparts, if not more.

I'm also sure that part of the gender norms and expectations impose on them is that they are socialized to be peaceful and listening. Even disregarding that, most women would NOT outright attack anyone, even if they have the Power, because well, they're human beings! In a reversed scenario, most men would protect their loved ones to their fullest if they got the Power.

I liked the novel for not portraying women as the morally superior gender as the case with all feminist fiction. But you have to pull so many strings to get that desired outcome.
