Worried about being discriminated against if I was to become a children's nurse

I was a PSW who also did some child care one time. Nobody and I mean absolutely nobody would hire me as a man working with children. Many times one partner would love me and want to hire me then get back and say the other partner didn't feel comfortable. Same thing happened as a PSW except rather than from clients it was from the staff. It's a female dominated industry and I was told you front by several facilities and employers that they don't hire men, period. I was told good luck suing them.

I did this for a few years and struggled hard. I couldn't get a steady paycheck and everything I did was scrutinized. Eventually I went back to warehouse/manufacturing and have been much happier. I hope this isn't the case for you but I'm still paying student loans for a career I'll never have.

I had someone in childcare who got really awful treatment until he left and decided to go somewhere else. Even Infront of parents and children he got berated. He had to sign a contract that he was not a pedophile. He got into another institution and then was happy

A brave career choice. But remember, you will be under suspicion constantly because of your sex. The biases built into the system are often hiden behind gender neutral language that is enacted with misandrist intent.

It will only take one woman's accusation to end your career. Are you willing to risk that?

Too risky. Pedo-panic is at an all-time high these days, at least in the US. Not sure how it is in the UK, but I know that the UK and the US have a bad habit of following each others leads.

You're going to probably be assumed to be a predator by most. Even if you do manage to find employment you're going to have a target on your forehead that says 'Kick me here Karen.' It's tragically unfair, but it's how things are.

I'd stay out of any such career for the foreseeable future.

Society is mysandric enough already to believe a promise of decent treatment in this case.

I think both sectors are actively looking to recruit more men. Look into it and base your decisions on facts not feelings and especially not fears! Schools etc have procedures to safeguard children yes but also to safeguard staff, ie children are changed with doors open in view of others

You're right to worry. Likely if you happen to be accused your employer isn't exactly going to go to bat to defend you because it makes them look bad. So then it's a question of how likely you are to be accused.

Reasons for false accusations range from the incredibly petty (I was late and needed an excuse so I said I was molested), attention seeking, and for older girls stuff like revenge from being rejected to excuse for cheating with a guy when they're boyfriend found out.

In the USA black men might be something like 20x more likely to be made the arbitrary victim of a false accusation but probably not so bad in the UK. Still if there's anything else odd or weird about you then your chances are much worse. If you don't stand out, keep your head down, are friendly but not involved with any women.... you're not gay are you? because that would really help avoid specific accusations (as opposed to general "gay men are pedos" accusations).

I'm sure there are many male nurses that haven't been hit, but then those that have been probably aren't nurses any more...

Still yeah ask around people working in the field if they heard of stories about it happening I guess.

And ask yourself what the plan B is if you lose your chosen career due to a false accusation.

I am a female paeds nurse. I work with a couple of male nurses and don't feel they are discriminated against for being male. In particular I think that the adolescent boys like being cared for by a bloke. What I would say though is just because there is a shortage of nurses, don't assume that it makes it less competitive (what often isn't portrayed is the reality that we are short staffed but there isn't funding for more staff). Paeds in particular isn't the easiest branch to get into.
