IANAL but I have a male friend in NJ who went through this, kid was still an infant though. After consulting with an attorney they compromised at 3 years old. Not sure if that's what the judge would have ordered anyway but I got the sense it would have been along those lines. He's on the hook for alimony for two years, so the time and money line up (basically it means he pays more / gets less time for the first two years, and then it reverts to less money - just child support and not much of it / 50% time after the child turns three). He also got some favorable things I probably shouldn't share, basically she wanted to screw her long-term in favor of two years of time and extra support. I think she's hoping to stay at home with the kid, not work, and meet a sugardaddy before the two years is up. There's positives to the plan (like more time with mommy in toddler years, she's not a bad mom). But a huge risk on her part long-term, my buddy just has to survive for two years and then he's in great shape. He's moving back in with his parents and just throwing himself at work and gym, so... hopefully he comes back out the other side ready to rock at life.
