Toxic people is toxic people

Psychology major here. All human behavior is ultimately rooted in particular sociocultural and political-economic (environmental) factors. There is a social logic to behavior, meaning it can't be meaningfully understood at the level of the individual sans social context.

Toxic behavior, like any behavior, is resultant of particular situational factors. It's not inherent to individuals, and it doesn't randomly spring up from within them for no reason.

possessiveness is not exclusive of monogamy

You're failing to appreciate the critical distinction between the abstract and the concrete. Sure, "possessiveness" in the abstract is not unique to any particular institution. However, there is indeed a concrete variety of possessiveness that logically results from the violation of monogamy.

I don't see why having a close relationship with someone requires sexual fidelity. Actually, a sexually open society, where all people engage each other sexually, would be much more integrated and enjoy closer bonds.

This is a fallacy of the single cause—your understanding of causation here is simplistic. In actuality, not only are there different kinds of causation (e.g., Aristotle's four causes, proximate VS ultimate causation), but everything is resultant of a complex chain of antecedent events.

Additionally, you're failing to consider the concrete cultural thought processes involved in jealousy (e.g., "Hey, my girlfriend just had sex with another man, but she's not supposed to do that because she's my girlfriend, and boyfriends and girlfriends are supposed to only have sex with each other"; "Why did she betray our promise to exclusively have sex with each other, which is the point of being boyfriend and girlfriend?"; "Maybe she had sex with him because he's better than me"). The backdrop, or ultimate cause, of these thoughts is institutionalized monogamy. They would not otherwise manifest, or at least not to any appreciable extent.

Cultural psychologist Carl Ratner comments on this in Vygotsky's Sociohistorical Psychology and its Contemporary Applications:

Adult, human jealousy . . . presupposes a concept of exclusive ownership, a future-oriented premonition of losing something important and even losing self-esteem. All of these coalesce into the jealous feeling that one's lover loves another person. . . . adult human jealousy is constructed from social concepts . . . . Cultures lacking appropriate concepts should not experience jealous feelings.

(p. 77, bold added)

The appropriate concepts referenced here, of course, are those comprising monogamy.

mature people who are in monogamous relationships don’t get jealous

Institution

Institutions, according to Samuel P. Huntington, are "stable, valued, recurring patterns of behavior". Institutions can refer to mechanisms which govern the behavior of a set of individuals within a given community, and are identified with a social purpose, transcending individuals and intentions by mediating the rules that govern living behavior. According to Geoffrey M. Hodgson, it is misleading to say that an institution is a form of behavior. Instead, Hodgson states that institutions are "integrated systems of rules that structure social interactions".

Marriage

Marriage, also called matrimony or wedlock is a culturally and often legally recognized union between people called spouses. It establishes rights and obligations between them, as well as between them and their children, and between them and their in-laws. It is considered a cultural universal, but the definition of marriage varies between cultures and religions, and over time. Typically, it is an institution in which interpersonal relationships, usually sexual, are acknowledged or sanctioned.
