First, I would suggest finding a group/club that meets for something new but interesting to you. Preferably something with a mix of men & women. (I did ballroom/swing dancing which I highly recommend, but just something you're interested in learning/doing.)

Now that you have a social setting to explore, I would try to not go on a date with anyone until you've at least interacted with them 3+ separate times at said activity. This will give you a chance to practice some social skills like flirting / how to be inquisitive in conversation / reading body language / noticing behavior patterns all of which will help you vet a bit more beyond any initial lust. Once you feel comfortable you can try eliciting / agreeing to a few dates and grow from there.

The golden rule here when dealing with men or women, is to believe their actions more than their words. Oh, and never lose yourself to what you perceive someone else wants, it will only cause you pain.
