More of a discussion but since the entire original concept is "holy matrimony" why does the state and their contracts of "marriage" even exist or that we buy into them?

Why not just have a marriage declared within say, a church or whatever the couple organization of choice as being married? Any consequences of abandoning or ending that marriage would only be within that institution itself?
