Women self-harm by attempting to impact their looks - like by "cutting", getting fat, etc. or "injure" their "social standing" - like alienating themselves from their friends or families.

Men self-harm by trying to injure their bodies (breaking bones, drinking, drugs, etc) or "injure" their "success" - like quitting their job or school.

Statistically speaking, those who think they feel the worst is by far unmarried white women in their 20s. This directly opposes “clinical” studies of things like suicide and mental illness. What this shows is that people who feel the worst aren’t likely to see just how bad they feel and are also very bad at articulating their feelings. Thus because women have the better mental health, they are more likely to attempt suicide over smaller things, but not have it in them to go through with the attempt or have someone to stop them.

My cousin punched the mirror and was bleeding. Felt bad because we were like close friends and I know what his issues were, and I couldn't really change them.

I use to cut myself a lot. Haven't in years but there's big scars all over the one arm. I don't notice them ever, nor does anyone else. My mom calls it out a lot though, calling my arm fucked up LOOOL....

And no it wasn't for attention, I hid the scars when I was cutting. Hating yourself doesn't require attention seeking.

I punched stuff in an attempt to build callouses on my knuckles because I assumed that was a significant component of self-defense.

I wouldn't characterize that as self-harm, though.

I have in turn when I get so stressed out, punched my wall in anger/grief, and resulted in some bad bruising and bleeding (granted, I nearly put my fist through the wall), although I'm not sure if that counts as self-harm, I do it every now and again.
