Yes. Go through your things and find shit you haven't looked at in weeks. Try to sell this shit. If you can't sell, donate to a charity. What the charities won't take, throw away. It will be hard, but it's a BIG step in reducing the need for materialism in your life.

Start putting big purchases off for a few weeks to REALLY consider how much you need the thing. Only buy necessities right away.

Only thing that I'm dragged down by is my obsession with clothes. I base it on 2 things.. 1. The high I get from clothes shopping. 2. Growing up poor and not having clothes.

I guess growing up in the 90's during the "everyone has Polo, Tommy Hill, etc.." was difficult for me cause I couldnt afford it. Had a beautiful girl once ask my buddy "Why does he wear that sweater all the time" Reason was cause I only had like 5 shirts..

Now I find myself browing online clothing reatilers daily. Usually spending $50- $75 a day on a shirt or some odd item. I routinely, usally bi-monthly buy $200 jeans from Sweden. Some months I decide its a brilliant idea to spend upwards of 2 grand on Burberry. I have a spare bedroom which Ive erected 4 clothing racks which I have upwards of 350 shirts. Ive even wasted thousands of dollars on undergarments...I've dedicated 2 drawers just to designer underwear. Shoe racks, endless amounts of shirts, ties, suits etc..

Its the comfort I get from knowing I'm more then likely the best dressed person in any setting. The knowledge that no one will see me wear a shirt more then twice in a 6 month span. Having the perfect leather jacket for any outfit or $500 Chelsea boots to top it off.

I do spend about $100 a month of haircuts also but aside from that I dont really buy anything else.

I even drive a mid-90's VW...

Maybe its feminine...but its a feeling of security to me. Plus a confidence booster on some level.

Right now Ive been eyeing up these Lee Western Slim cut flannels...$97 a piece. Do I need them? Throwimg $400 at them?...prob not.

You are the prize not your possessions so yes, Spend on hobbies and experiences for you, as long as you keep savings and investments.

I mean I'm with you here:

I strive to have the nicest things that I could buy.

Though I don't buy nice things (in a sense of hip/cool/'wow, that looks really nice' sense) I buy quality stuff, quality stuff in a sense that: it's the best shit that my budget allows me and it does the best job for why I'm buying it.

A simple example would be: I buy t shirts (everyone does that), I don't spend extra cash on flashy shit I rather spend that extra money on quality and stick with plain black V or crew neck.

There are three regulations to any expense.

It can be quality.

It can be fast.

It can be cheap.

You only 2 of the 3 at most.

So you're doing right. Buy what you need and in the best quality you can, do not buy to impress others.

There is a little blue pill about materialism. If that's how you judge your happiness, more power to you. the reason I say it's a little blue pill is as follows.

There is everything blue pill about covert contracts, with yourself and others. That's the danger of materialism. When your external acquisitions become your value, you've failed.

Having things that are designed well, made well, and look nice is not a bad thing, it's good taste, like wanting a pretty girl over an ugly one. But having anything to please other people, never use, and keep getting things you never use is materialistic.
