If anyone has advice about the question I'll ask near the end of this post, I would love to hear it please. WARNING: This is a very long post and I'm sorry, I tried to shorten it but I didn't want to shorten it too much more or else it either wouldn't make sense or set it up properly.

So today I went to our local Walmart with my oldest daughter who is 18 years old now. On our way in, we saw a man sitting on the bench outside to the left of the main doors we entered. He seemed rather depressed and she pointed this out. I told her as soon as we are done grabbing the three things we needed, if she would like, we can stop by and ask him if he is okay. He possibly might just be deep in thought or perhaps he is waiting on a ride. She agreed and we made our purchases as quickly as possible.

We get back outside and sure enough, the man is still sitting there, damn near in the same position he was sitting on our way in. We put our things up in the car and walked over to him. I told her that "I'm right here. But you go ahead and ask him. Be polite. Don't be all up in his bubble, keep a respectful distance. Smile." She nodded and stepped forward. The following conversation occurred -

"Sir? Hello?"
He looked up. "Yes?"
*He looked like a hot mess with bloodshot eyes*
"Oh oh.. um. are you okay?"
*He threw on that classic fake smile that I recognize but I was unsure if she recognized it*
"Yes. Thanks for asking. I'm just waiting on my girlfriend."
"Oh? Are you sure? You seem um... I'm sorry but you seem upset. Is there anything I can do to help?"
He hesitated.
"No, thank you. It's okay. We just had a fight. I'm just a little upset but it'll be okay. Thank you for asking though. I appreciate it, really."
"A fight?"
*A woman comes out of Walmart and comes around to where we are standing and stops and stares at us, looking primarily at him and then gives my daughter this look that's hard to really describe accurately - like she is pissed but curious at the same time?*
Woman: "Uhm. Like. What's going on? Who are these people?"
He tried to respond, but she cut him off. He had a defensive look about him. Hands up, palms facing her like she was the police.
Woman: "You know what, idgaf. You can just walk your sorry ass home in this heat. F**k this." And she turned and starting walking away.
-- I was about to say something and my daughter managed to before me, like a quick snap --
"Uh yes, excuse me? Miss?"
The woman turned around
Woman: "What?" (in a nasty, exhausted tone)
"Are you the abusive girlfriend?"
-- "Hey now" -- (me)
Woman: "EXCUSE ME?!"
"I know you heard me. He is reacting to you like a beaten dog and now you want to force him to walk in this heat? The heat index says it feels like 104 degrees right now. What the hell is wrong with you?"
The woman started to shout something, suddenly stepping quickly up towards my daughter. I got in front of her, between them.
-- "Going after her will be the last thing you remember lady. Back off." --
She cussed and screamed and twisted around, leaving to her car.
My daughter turned around and had such a distraught look on her face, actually crying out of nowhere.
"I am so sorry if I made things worse. But my mom and I can give you a ride home in our air conditioned car. Do you need anything? Please don't tell me you live with her..."
He shook his head, also crying, and asked her if he could hug her. She said yes and they hugged.
She looked at me and said "Yes, I just volunteered you since I don't have my license yet, but if I have to, I'll drive him anywhere he wants to go, even if it's illegally." She smiled.

When everything calmed down, and he confirmed he lived separately, she just gave him a ride to get his medicine at the Walmart pharmacy, we brought him with us to our car and drove him home which was close to twenty minutes in the opposite direction of our house. During the car ride, he was extremely thankful. He tried to offer gas money. My daughter accepted it and then asked him to hold out his hand. He did and she gave it back. He looked at her oddly and she said "Well, after you gave it to me, it became mine. Therefore, I can choose what to do with it so I decided to give it back to you. But thank you. Keep it to get yourself more of your medicine or to take a better woman out on a date." She smiled cutely at him and he just started crying again while crumpling up the money in his fist. He was extremely emotional and severely thankful.

He told us that this isn't the first time she has made him walk home whenever they get into a fight while out in public. And whenever it does happen (the fight in public) and people are around, they either record it on their cell phone, laugh and mock the fight on both sides or primarily make fun of him for being weak or letting a woman talk to him like that, he is often encouraged to smack the taste out of her mouth, and if it's none of that, people usually grimace and just stealthily scoot away or straight up just walk away from the situation and don't offer help or mediation or anything. He has always felt so alone. Even his parents won't talk to him anymore and try to help because they've tried to in the past with this girlfriend that he has been with now for over a year, and they got tired of him not following their advice. He was floored that someone actually walked up and cared.

Before we left his property, he hugged my daughter again and said "Sweetie, you have no idea what you've done for me. I was in a hole and you just handed me a ladder to climb out. I can't thank you enough. And you Ma'am. Whatever you're doing here (he pointed at her) please keep doing it. She is going to make a man very happy some day." He smiled and went inside.

Now the question, guys. My daughter asked me if she did the right thing. Should she have gotten herself so involved in something she had nothing to do with? That she wasn't directly involved with previously? What if her actions that day causes her to harm him even more, the next time they see each other, as a punishment? What if what she did today only makes things worse for him. I tried to convince her that what she did was amazing and I am so proud of her but she is all beside herself now, worried and wants to go check on him.

What do you think guys? Should she have stayed out of it? I don't think so but she has some good points of serious concern. She swears she saw a bruise on his shoulder (he was wearing a tank top and there was a darker brown spot that resembled a bruise) and she is terribly scared she will hurt him! She wants to check on him and I remember exactly where he lives and how to get there. I understand her concern and I'm honestly considering it. She also brought up sending a welfare check on him because she has a "bad gut feeling" which I totally get. Any advice???
